So, what makes the heat retention of these so much better than the older ones? Do they have a lid that screws on and off? What insulation mechanism makes them effective at storing heat when you want them to, then releasing it?

The vast majority of economy 7 installations will count on the off peak tariff at night on both fuse boards. The only time you will pay day rate at night for the 24hr supply is if there is 2 completely separate meters as well as 2 fuse boards. If its one meter with 2 readings, you will save money using the washing machine at night.
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy Жыл бұрын
This maybe to case in your situation but is incorrect for most daul rate supplys they have a single meter (with two readings) & dual consumer units. As I have seen over 8000 over the past 14 years You will only normally get cheaper electricity if its wired to your off peak supply but you can check it see if this is so by running it at night and doing a meter reading before and after to be sure
@HarbourYachts
@HarbourYachts 2 жыл бұрын
You say that running the washing machine in the Economy7 hours still uses peak rate electricity, but I don't think this is correct. The dual rate meter & the meter timeswitch are before the consumer units, so during Economy7 hours the entire house runs at off-peak rate. I know this is true because my off-peak usage increases even during the summer, when the night storage heaters are all switched off. If I charge my car during the off-peak hours, then the off-peak meter reading increases but the peak meter reading does not.
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
Ah you have a time switch and one fuse board correct ? The majority of E7 homes aren't wired this way. They have 2 consumer units one 24hrs and the other 7hrs and many people think they are getting cheap electric when they aren't If your whole house switches over to E7 make sure you take full advantage of this
@SimonLangford
@SimonLangford 2 жыл бұрын
@@DeathLazerBoy No, there are 2 CUs - one for the storage heaters, one for the rest of house. (No fuse boards, those went out in the 1980s or earlier!) But it doesn't matter how many CUs there are, it's the activity at the meter which counts. At the end of the day there's only ever one meter running at a time. From 00:00 to 07:00 the low-rate meter turns, while from 07:00-00:00 the normal-rate meter turns. They never both turn at the same time. So from 00:00-07:00 the whole house's consumption is metered by the low-rate meter.

@@DeathLazerBoy I have an E7 meter and two consumer units in my one bed flat. How would I take advantage of off peak rates for stuff like washing/drying and using oven? With two consumer units does this mean I'm charged peak rates 24 hours a day if my washing machine is wired through the peak consumer unit and only way to take advantage of the off peak is to have the washing machine wired through the off peak consumer unit?
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
You have 2 circuits. on peak and off peak the peak Supply is on 24hrs a day and is expensive the off peak comes on for 7 hours normally 23:30 to 06:30 this only supplies the charging on younstirage heaters and the off peak immersion If it turns on it the day it is peak 24 hours a day If it only turns on at night it is off peak The only way to use a washing machine on the off peak is to have an outlet put in that runs on the off peak but it wouldn't work in the day Hope that helps I am looking for likes and subs to grow the channel

Great video. I just got this installed to replace old Dimplex storage heater and I'm struggling with it. How long does it take to heat up the bricks? Do I need to enable off pick heating in the settings? I'm on Economy 7 so have 2 switches: one for day time energy (booster) and another for off pick. My heater was on overnight and it's still cold. Both switches were on. The fan is blowing cold air even when I change temperature to 30C. Is it true that it would take up to 3 days for bricks to heat up? Do I need to have it switched on from 6pm for it to work at all? Thanks.

@@petes2680 the quantum charges during the off peak period to replace the heat emitted during the times it is programmed to release heat. The case will be cool to touch if it hasn't released any heat thus shows it it working retaining the heat. For example you don't get a cold arm leaning on a fridge or a hot hand holding a thermos flask if you did they would be faulty.

Hi, may I know if you’ve come up with a solution to this situation it seems like I’m having the same problem with you, I’ve left the heater on for two days, but it still releases cold air at selected timeslot instead of warm air, I’m pretty sure the room’s temperature is around 15°. However, when I turned on the booster, it works perfectly fine, warm air came out immediately. it’s a really frustrating situation hope that you could give me some feedback.

When they are charging through the night and during the boost period in the afternoon the fuses for the 2 large heaters get hot. Have you any ideas to what I should do?
@DeathLazerBoy

The fuses often get warm as electricity flows through similar to a phone charger but if they are getting hot definitely get a qualified electrician to have a look especially if burn marks and melting is visible. The current standard is to have breakers in a distribution board changing a fuse board to a newer distribution boards is recommended when substantial work is done or every 15 years

Hello, could you please help me? I have a new meter (still an economy 7 - Landis gyr meter 5246C). I also have 2 Dimplex Quantum Heaters, models QM100, and QM150. The Off-peak regime was only turned on for my flat 3 days ago, and on the first night, I made the mistake of switching off the QM150 heater from the 2 small supplies because it didn't produce any heat. The QM100 did accumulate lots of heat overnight (on the off-peak tariff) and started working just fine and has been for 3 days now. The QM150, which I switched on immediately the next morning for the next 2 nights hasn't accumulated any heat at all and is blowing cold air at all times, so I have no idea how to make it work. For the smaller heater, it happened naturally. Please, if you have any advice, I am ready to hear it! Thank you!

They will run off any electricity supply as long as both supply's are connected However they are designed to charge the bricks up on the off peak Supply Once up to temperature they stop charging if this was done on a regular single rate tariff it would be expensive It all depends on your unit rate also you can't set charge times only release times on these but with an external time this could be achieved Thanks for the contribution please subscribe if you can to help grow the channel 😀

@@DeathLazerBoy So to clarify, each would need two plugs (I guess they could come off a short extension from the same socket?) And you'd need to kludge the 4 hour charge time via a timer since they are designed for economy 7? For clarification I"m wondering if these or devices like this could be used to supplement gas CH by using off peak electricity in a few rooms which would mean the gas CH has less work to do.
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
@@Joe-lb8qn in theory yeah but the price of electricity is much higher then gas but if you have a time when tour electricity is very cheap or need to dump excess solar PV electricity somewhere then these would be good but the storage side would need a timer to restrict the input to the cheap periods or when excess Solar PV is generated

@@DeathLazerBoy many people like me on an EV tariff such as Octopus Go get 4 hours of cheap electricity (mine is 7.5p) every day. I run most things except cooker then. @DeathLazerBoy

@@Joe-lb8qn wise move average price of natural gas in the UK is 7.7p and even new boilers are more then 90% efficient Electricity is 100% efficient as its all turned into heat but its normally much more expensive than gas 30p kwh at the moment so if you are getting it for so little it would make sense make sure that you use a timer though 😀

I have found no way to save money with a storage heater. You can work out the maths with standard rate, electric heaters only vs storage heaters with economy 7. There is barely any chance for a person to utilize the storage heater in any practical way, which saves them money over using electric power when needed. On top of this storage heaters are huge and expensive, whereas electric heaters are cheap, flat or even just portable. Assuming a property is well maintained, has decent windows/doors and reasonable insulation and humidity control, a small 4-500 square foot home can be heated with an electric heater on the 1 or 2kw settings, depending where you live in the UK. Up north you will almost certainly need 2khw. Currently power is 28p per kwh standard rate vs 36p/21p for econ7 peak/offpeak. If i am a person who comes home at 6 and needs heat until 11pm then i only need 5-10kwh of heat per day. Storage heaters (even the best spec) can charge up to 25kwh of heat, but even still will lose a large chunk before you arrive home at 6. Remember they lose 55% of their heat in the first 24hrs. For a storage heater to be worthwhile, it needs to save you 25% on your heating. This ALSO ignores your more expensive daytime usage. So for you to get 5-10kwh of heat that evening you need to store no more than 6.25-12.5kwh of heat, since 25 will be lost by 6pm that day. So we can tell so far its more expensive already.... You need to store 25% more at least... which kills your off peak energy saving price. And your daytime electricity is going to be more expensive too... If you use 5kw for cooking, washing, electric shower, PC, TV, Gaming you will spend an extra 40p per day on inflated peak rates. --------------------------------- The ONLY scenario where you save money, is where you want to get the absolute most heat to use there and then. Almost like you are fighting to keep yourself freezing to death and need to max out the heat for an entire daytime before charging up again the next. Bear in mind, this would mean storing up 25kwh (£5.25 per day...£187 per month) in winter months, just for heat. Which is an amount of heat very few people in the UK need outside of the extreme regions of Scotland, where they are probably burning logs anyway. ALL of your summer use is inflated, because you are not storing heat then. You are paying over the odds for everything else at peak rates. I literally cannot model any scenario other than one close to above where you are not at home 24/7 fighting for your life to keep warm, anyone who works, sleeps, goes out in the evening does not need 24/7 heat. They need bursts...

The insulation just isn't there.
