At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.

I don’t think you can get any 3rd gen IS350 under 20k AUD. I just had a quick search on Carsales, the cheapest one asked for 24k, with 240k kms on the odometer. And tbh, 2nd gen is a better choice. It is faster than 3rd gen, handles better, and looks more classy and premium in my eyes.

BMW 3 series for me. Providing you get a well maintained one, and keep maintaining it they’re reliable. People get caught out when they buy a 5 owner, no service history one and the previous 3 owners have not maintained the car. Don’t go back to the dealer, use an independent mechanic for maintenance and they’re not much more expensive to own than anything else on the list.

Don't know where you are going to get a turbo Falcon for $20,000, they are selling for much more than that now. Any at that price are going to be early FG and trashed. Any FG2 or FGX are more than that. Standard Barra Falcons are in the price range you discussed. Great value are non Taxi Ecolpi cars - my son's fuel costs are the same as my other son in his mazda3

Owned a Mazda 6 Sport Wagon 2.2 Skyactive Diesel here in the Uk. It was a gorgious dark metallic red, but the rear sub frame started to rust badly so I got shot of it. The turbo also blew, but Mazda were brilliant and changed the turbo completely free out if warranty with no argument, excellent support from Mazda. The Mazda Skyactive diesel has a not so good reputation here in the UK, reliability after cartain milage/kms is poor even for those who drive long distance. I loved the Mazda, the petrols are supposed to be very reliable. We no longer get many large affordable cars here in the UK, as the SUV is king, unless premium German marques. I prefer large sedan or wagon but choices are getting thin on the ground every year with the SUV craze😔.

Good to see the ZB get a mention. Brought a 2019 Calais V Tourer 2 weeks ago to replace my 2016 R line Passat and must admit it’s quite impressive. Yup my neighbor with a redline v8 laughs at it, but as a general alrounder it’s proving to be quicker quieter and bugger all thirstier then the bi-tdi Passat. It’s used purely as a tourer, and it’s perfect for that. Must admit…it is funny watching the knuckle draggers get upset with it…and all that without even getting behind the wheel of one. Maybe they shouldn’t have called it commodore and just let the name die ?

Lexus. If you are looking for a car under $20000 and reliability you cannot go wrong. Pity they didn't make a wagon.

They did! look up IS 300 SportCross Wagon, first gen IS with a 2JZ-GE 3.0L straight six in sexy wagon goodness. quite rare I will be honest... and getting a bit older now. But just a taste of what could have been. Wikipedia has a couple of pics

XV50 Camrys used a 2.5 4 cylinder engine in North America. It was probably because of tbe issues that plagued the 2.4 engines there. Also, W211 and W212 E class are very reliable.

The Falcon was the only large car on here. Don't care where you are from, the rest of those are mid size. Unfortunately you can't recommend many modern large cars that are going to be economical to run and repair.

ADD: P3 gen Volvo's with the T6 engine. More reliable than their European counterparts. Featuring a straight 6 turbo engine with 300hp and AWD. Plus they look pretty smart and have lots of safety tech.
