When we think of Blackbuck or Krishna Mruga, normally Rajasthan come to our mind. But are you aware that to see these blackbucks you need not go to Rajasthan but is also located close to Namma Bengaluru City!!!
Don’t believe me, then let’s head to Jayamangali Blackbuck Conservation Reserve which is located in the Tumkur district.
It has the largest population of blackbuck in Karnataka, apart from Ranibennur Blackbuck Santuary.
It is less than 2 hour drive from Bengaluru city (130 kms).
The area of the reserve is 798 acres. Apart from blackbucks, the area consists of Acacia and Eucalyptus plantation.
The best time to visit this Conservation Reserve is post monsoon until winters (September to December).
Early morning (6 ~ 8 am) or during the Sunset (5 ~ 7 pm) you can see hundreds of blackbucks in groups.
If you want to see the Black Bucks in the afternoon, you need to walk for a longer distances. But again, sighting of blackbucks are not guaranteed during this period.
Blackbucks are very shy and can reach up to speed of 80 kmph.
Male bucks have distinctive black and white colour and have long twisted horns. Females have fawn colour and do not have horns.
Apart from the blackbuck, other mammals present in the area includes Wolf, Jungle cat, mangoose, bats, fox, hare and rodents.
Care need to be taken if you are following Google Map, which will lead you only till the main road where you can find a board of Jayamangali reserve forest.
You need to take another 3 kms inside which is mainly mud road to reach Jayamangali reserve. Google Map does not work at this location and better to take help of local villagers if you are confused.
There is No Entry Fees into this conservation reserve forest most interesting is it’s a Drive in Reserve Forest.
Carry sufficient food and water as there are no facilities inside this reserve. Also, carry a good camera with lenses to get best shots of these gentle blackbucks.
Drive very slowly inside this reserve forest so that you do not distract these animals to get best view of them.
