Crackle tunes, LS swaps, de-cats, E85, Nitrous, monster tachos, 16-speaker stereos and wiper deletes are just the tip of the iceberg when Scotty, Benny, and Marty get together to debate the good, the bad, and the ugly of the modified car culture.
Who should we invite for our next debate and what topic should they discuss? Let us know in the comments section!

Who should we invite for our next debate and what topic should they discuss? Let us know in the comments section! When we decided to do a debate video on the subject of car mods we figured we need a couple of guests that are both influential and knowledgeable about the subject. We think Benny from BCW and Marty from MCM were exactly that, and then some! Put them together with Scotty and we've got ourselves a formidable panel of experts in the field of modified car culture. Enjoy:)

Actually, it was nice to see Marty not getting steamrolled by Moog’s ADD need to dominate the camera. He, Benny and Scott riff really well off each other without devolving into nothing but double-entendre silliness. There’s a place for that and it’s cool but sometimes I feel bad for Marty always having to play straight-man instead of just getting his point across with no gag.

Such a cool discussion, but it did make me feel old. Best mod in my day was multiple carbs, usually twin SU’s or if you had lots of dollars, twin 45DCOE’s. The worst mod was a “cable cam”. Pull the choke cable out until the engine ran rough like it had a big cam… Love your work guys!

My first top mod is getting tyres that I trust to keep me safe and turn and stop reliabily when I ask them to. Guilty of the single wiper swap, chroming random stuff like the fuel filler flap, aftermarket pedals for no reason, water-sucking CAIs and punching out cats. Also guilty of the small nitrous shot but thankfully smart enough to leave it on the whole time. The cool VL thing to do for a while was the chrome cup Autometer gauges on the bonnet but because extra plumbing was expensive you'd just buy 3 or 4 volt meters and run two wires. Feeling very seen in this video.

I knew of a bloke that would fit head units with the Reebok spanner. Meaning he would wire them up and slide them as far as he could. Then plant his size 9 Reeboks on the front and push until it was flush. Not sure if that technique caused any fires, but you would have to wonder.

I remember a mate had collected up a pile of old factory speakers we'd replaced from about 5 different cars over the course of about a year or so. He ended up with 13 speakers in his Bluebird wagon, including mounting three in a box as a "subwoofer". It was so bad it was good

My favorite mod from a mechanical side of things would have to be a turbo. Even a silly little ebay turbo can make damn near any engine more fun. It puts a smile on your face when the boost hits. And then there's also a special place in my heart for car audio. So in that sense doing a mod to your audio is life changing. Putting in a full audio system from speakers, head unit, amp, and a good sub. Having your tunes at a crisp and perfect sound quality with the bass hitting in your chest just brings things to a different level. It something everyone can enjoy and it makes you want to spend more time in your car. Truly a great mod for any car enthusiast.

Scott, nice reflective video. In my part of the 'States, we'd put a toggle switch on the reverse lights, as people assumed you did an engine swap and wired something up wrong. Was also a way to indicate to someone you wanted a roll race (on the street). Another faux pas was putting Cragar mags/big tires on a stock car...

I was talking to my son yesterday (he's 9 and wants to be a mechanic) about the next mod for our Evo X: I just had the engine rebuilt and I was tossing up between E85 and some lower offset rims, but I live in rural Victoria and wider rims would kick up more gravel and sandblast the rear doors. So E85 it is. Cheers boys, entertaining and educational discussion, that helped me to make a decision.
@Low760
@Low760 3 жыл бұрын
Why did an evo X need an engine rebuild!?
@emlix1
@emlix1 3 жыл бұрын
@@Low760 it had 290,000km on it, and whilst it has quite specific dash warnings for almost everything, bizarrely it didn't have one for the timing chain, which jumped a cog and was misdiagnosed by my mechanic who then grenaded the engine whilst trying to fix a "stuck valve timing solenoid" that was actually a worn timing chain. I was actually pretty amazed that it made it to almost 300k at all, since the service handbook only goes up to 210k. It's now got all forged internals, ARP head studs, new ported head, manifold, turbo, intercooler etc, and recently got a new front valance, bonnet and a respray courtesy of an insurance company after some tool reversed into me, although I'm $15k poorer for the engine rebuild. It's going to be a lifetime project car and bottomless money pit, but it's worth it for those rare moments when you get the chance to open the taps- then it feels like the $50-odd thousand bucks I've spent tuning it was worth it!

Great discussion. Even hearing all your weird Aussie cars. :) I did roll my eyes at the decat... There are SO many poorly maintained cars on the road with garbage plugs, dirty MAF, and O2 sensors with the CEL on running pig rich pouring HC's out the tail pipe. If one in 1,000 people (hot rodders) decat, it doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

Glad you pointed out that the technology in today's aftermarket ECUs has moved so much forward to make engines run better, especially older one's, cleaner and more controllable. Interesting to hear that decat the exhaust system doesn't give that much more horsepower. I think the best choice is then to switch to Sports Cats; They're a lot less restrictive than a standard cat, and they improve performance and are legal.

Worst mod (or not) on cars that have wiper washers on the bonnet that can be turned around, when you stop at lights, squirt your washers at the car next to you at the lights. I do absolutely agree with Benny there, crackle tunes are the most annoying and obnoxious thing to do to a car. And the worst thing about them is that many manufacturers do it themseslves. Most mid to high-power VAG cars crackle like mad, especially those with DSGs in them. AMGs will also crackle on every single shift. And of course it's engineered to perfection, which means that they sound exactly the same each and every time. Back in the old days, most engines crackled and popped because they had to run rich as hell to keep those cylinder walls cooled. Now? Now it crakles, because the computer was told to make it crackle. Additionally, I personally don't have an issue with it when it's somewhere on a highway or autobahn. I get it, car was going fast, engine at high revs, crackling and popping is acceptable. But people just sitting there at a meet or even worse in a residential area, playing with their gas pedal just to make it crackle? Annoying as hell.

Best was a Bosch Electronic points conversion on a late 70's 6 cyl Valiant and alternator fitted to a HB Torana. Worst was in line screen washer water heater to speed up defrosting of the windscreen.

My all time favourite mod (which kinda not a mod) was the unequal length headers on the 2000 era WRX. The most awesome rumble bar a lumpy cam v8 ever!!!

I put racing beat springs under my NA Miata. They were not kidding when they said "Lowering Springs". They were so low I was on the bump stops %80 of the time and couldn't drive over a dime without scraping.

My buddy did "a performance suspension" on his Civic. If you drove over a dime you could feel if it was heads or tails because the muppet had already put on NBA spec low profiles and felt it wasn't important to mention to the shop where he bought the parts....

Well I learned from that experiance. I didn't expect it to be so low. I'm saving for a set of real coil overs so I can adjust the height to what is best. Shouldn't have tried to cheap out.

@@haltech in short you could control how much water would drip through, it could also be closed off completely or open it up so it's a steady stream of water, this a very cheap $1 boost controller

The ECU can be a very nice upgrade. Because they can be swapped pretty easily, it's worth overbuying if it means support for something else in future(getting an ECU that can support a V8 even when putting it into a 4 cylinder for example).

Great show, well done boys. Fyi, I bought a new 1984 Cordia Turbo in 1984, it was great fun and fast in it’s day. I drove one a couple years ago too. Just don’t go there, it’s not good in 2021😖
