Kara, I outline my books before I start writing, and I think that helps me stay on track, but I also take days off (I budget them in advance, due to deadline, usually 3 a month) whenever I start to feel myself focusing more on wordcount than quality. I also think the system can be super flexible, because you can shoot for, say, 15 stars a month, but those could be 3 stars on 5 days, or 1 star on 15 days, etc.

Yes, absolutely, which is when I take one of my days off. I personally can go about 10 days before I feel myself writing toward the star instead of the story. Also what I love about this system is that you don't have to write every day. If your goal is toward stars instead of days, you could earn several stars a day fewer days a month.

This is an awesome idea!! I'm definitely going to try this, because I've been struggling with my writing lately. I used this method but with a tiny calendar and just check marks. Kept it on the nightstand. Very good for inducing guilt at bedtime. LOL For the last few months, I've just kept a Scrivener folder for each month.

I need to figure out a similar system, except for readings for grad school classes. It's so easy to forget to do them when you only have each class once a week and I spent all day today listening to Welcome to Night Vale instead.

i've been doing the same thing! omg :) i wrote my first book last year!

NaNoWriMo works in this way for me because I just love seeing the wordcount bar go up every day, and if it hasn't gone up then I feel I really need to go and make it go up. :') I usually love this so much that I average 5000 words a day in November. Outside of November I really struggle to write at all. Hopefully the calendar/star system will help me!

I am totally going to try this! Pencil slashes through the days on a calendar are nowhere near as appealing as shiny star stickers. :)

I can't write unless I've fully brainstormed the next scene. So I'll also go a week without writing and then bang out five chapters in three days. I find forcing myself to write a predetermined amount equates to a good amount of crap I end up deleting.

Do you ever find because you are forcing yourself to write a certain amount every day, that some of it just comes out as like word vomit, because you are just writing just because you have to? because I can go a week without writing a single word, but then the next week I'll write like 30 pages
