As soon as you made the comparison to writers and cats being viscous, I got this weird urge to draw some of my favourite writers as cats. Schwab Cat: cat playing with black stone. one black eye. claw marks in background matching August's marks. Bardugo Cat: silver cat wearing antler collar. playing with crow feathers. eclipse in the background. Omg I could make a Gaiman cat...

This makes sense regarding writing versus transcribing. Sometimes on the train I get hit with scene, characters parts, and other stuff in my head, then I write it done so I keep it, and now I realize it was transcribing in my notepad and computer. EUREKA!!! Thank you for the video and your cat!

Okay, sorry to spam the comments but I loved this: "My creative time is infinite. My transcribing time is very limited." Yes!

I'm the worst at time management because I have so much free time, but I do find that what you said about the part at the computer just being transcribing super true! I definitely am more productive if I've thought about what I'm going to write while doing other stuff than when I'm sitting staring at a screen trying to figure it out and just typing/backspacing random keysmashes for an hour.

LOVE what you said about sitting at your computer is not writing, it's transcribing. It's so true. I'd never thought of it like that, my whole process just made much more sense!! :D

I've never heard anybody say they work the same way as me! I'm definitely that way, where if I have a week to write something, I'll take all week, but if you give me three hours, I can make that happen. This was super helpful to hear!! That I'm not broken, that's just the way I work.

Haha that ending! Thanks for this video. I might try that forest app. I procrastinate a lot. And I'm someone who has all the time to write yet I find I have to do it in small chunks otherwise I get distracted. Sigh.

Ok yes yes yes. Cats are liquids xD but also, I wrote more on my current project in the last week and a half when I had a deadline for an uni essay than I wrote in the month previous to that. So I work similarly to you but I had like this terrible experience with school before and now I respond to the opposite deadline rather than the real one. It's terrible and I think I'm not making any sense now... But again super helpful video cause another thing I did the last 2 weeks was have at least an hour's walk everyday. Imagination time is super important! Thanks for making me feel like that walk is justified! I'm glad the beautiful Oliver didn't maul your face. That was a risky move you pulled there V!

The concept that you will keep it all in your head until you can get it on paper because you are transcribing, not writing, works great until you have memory issues and know you have to write things down or lose them. Then, a notebook comes in handy. :-)

Firstly, I have a cat named Oliver too! Secondly (and the reason why I'm here) I love your advice in this! I can relate SO much when it comes to writing haha! But I'm so glad that there are options for us like minded people! Of course, when it works hahahaha!

I started using Forest because of you! It works when it works for me too. Until I started high school, I was super good at not procrastinating. It was all downhill from there. (I don't recommend finishing a college English paper...while you're already late for the class it's due for. I got an "A" but I think that's why I keep procrastinating.) You're so right about the writing wherever you are thing--I write at work! (...And I transcribe at work, in my notebook, shh.) I've been moving the deadline for my third draft all around, since I keep not meeting the deadlines... but I figure--better than nothing! Right now it's due on my 23rd birthday, so we'll see. Thank you for showing us Oliver! :D

Thank you so much for this! My dyslexia has always been some sort of an impediment when it came to writing to the extent that I began to make absolutely no progress at all, but throughout those times, ideas would swarm within the vicinity of my mind and I would be flooded with scenes and concepts for the story I'd be working on. Now, however, thanks to you and your statement of 'writing is not what you do at the computer; typing is what you do at the computer', I'm able to construct whatever notion comes to my mind, build it, and manifest it on paper or document. Your videos are always so helpful, so thank you, Queen of Writing! (It wouldn't be a regular video if Oliver didn't make an appearance. His anger was so palpable I was afraid he would actually scratch your face off xD)

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a cantankerous fluff ball! 😼 Also I thank you for mentioning the fact that computer time = transcription time. This is something I think I've been missing in my own practice lately. Great advice! 😃

As always, this video speaks to my soul--my horribly, horribly unproductive soul. When I was in school, I wrote SOOO MUCH (but then I graduated and had infinite time to write and ended up watching a lot of netflix and not much else. But last year, I had a baby and now my free time is very precious to me again and (after the initial six months of learning how to keep a small human alive and not sleeping) my writing time is more productive again! It's only an hour and a half in the evenings, but you'd better believe I'm making the most of those 90 minutes.

I'm definitely someone who works better with less time. I'm coming up to 3 years on my current book and I've been out of university nearly two years and snuggled on the job front. Now that I'm back in work I find my writing productivity has shot up? Suddenly my brain has gone "woah you suddenly only have this many days a week to write you should probably do something."

I'm perpetually hyper and kind of spontaneous so I'm definitely horrible with time management. (I'd have a bunch of dead trees.) I move around too much, can't do more than 15 minutes of studying at once, (a little better with writing, maybe 40 minutes) and I procrastinate too much. I think I subconsciously avoid doing things I'm forced to do so I'm that person who has 2 weeks to write a paper but I don't actually touch it until there are 1-2 days left. With writing, I'm horrible at reaching daily/weekly goals and I seem to actually get more done when I don't have goals.

I didn't even consider that by being busier, I am more productive. When I was a full time mum, I wrote but not steadily. But now I'm working and I've become frustrated that I haven't been able to write steadily, so I've been taking advantage of small bursts of time and it's strangely working well so far? I hope that it continues. I'm going to make it continue. I have too many books planned to not get through them all.
