Zero distance is only part of the equation. Then you must gather the data on the bullets flight path in an attempt to create a path that deviates from the line of sight as little as possible.
.
There is no “best zero”. There is only YOUR zero.
.
The video is long a wordy. Sorry. It had to be.

Good stuff once again. Conformation is key and spending ample time zeroing and confirming. This video is similar to the conversations about custom turret caps in my opinion. Knowing what your gun does and knowing what your location does to your gun. You’re a stud, thanks mark.

Wow a lot of needed details of truth! It’s common sense but it’s foreign ti us that don’t understand! I appreciate your information Mark! Don’t worry about keeping your videos short! Don’t try to please the hurried masses. If people want good stuff they’re gonna have to sit down, calm down, and pay attention! I don’t care if your videos are an hour long! You have some of the best information out there!

I think with the popularity of the 2.26” risers people don’t understand how a 50yd zero isn’t the same. I played with some StrelokPro data and for me a 100’ zero makes more sense for me with my red dot on a riser

I just watched this for the 2d time in several months. Great discussion of all the pitfalls behind random or poorly considered zero distance choices. Great to tell folks to do the work to learn what each chosen zero does with a rifle, while paying attention to that rifle's optic/mount height, and the cartridge you're running in that rifle. Awesome discussion for infogeeks like me. Thanks Mark.

Great info and so true about the bullet charts. People think they can use a zero for any gun and have the same results. It doesnt work that way.

Sight height and barrel length should be considered when choosing zero distance. For example, with the tall mounts like the Unity mount being all the rage right now sitting at 3.47" sight over bore, the 45m (49.23 yd) and 57yd zero out of a 16" barrel shooting M193, results in the tightest POI out to 300 yd. The 57 yd zero is slightly better than 45m (49.23 yd). Deltathirtyfour did a great two part video with animations on this. 36 yd in my opinion is best with an absolute co-witness, which is what I run.

Great content Mark. Any chance of you doing a video showing the data behind the 2 most common RDS pistol zero’s (10y & 25y)? I think being able to see how the POI is affected depending on which zero you choose while shooting at the common distance (3,5,7,10,15,25y etc) would be beneficial especially with how you presented the material in this video. Most people say this zero or that zero is good or good enough, but fail to show the visual of where the rounds actually hit/ what the holdovers/unders are (obviously optic height, gun & ammo varying slightly).

Found this interesting. Don't know if you'll see/read. Specifically the "high risers/mounts". IMO.... They're awesomeness! When bringing up the carbine it literally just allows it to be right to eye level and an immediate picture (no huntching over, searching etc) which is or isn't a big deal to some, it's all proficiency & training. The number one thing and the revolving pattern in this vid that I heard pertaining to zeroing were higher mounted optics & people just not knowing what happened/understanding. It's not that the mounting sucks, it's all a matter of range time, practice & the understanding of what's going on. Just like you're preaching over and over- super important. I could be wrong, but these mounts seem to work well for raids/CQB etc. Obviously as you mentioned, knowing holds is everything. Sorry for the length. Having a purpose build carbine/rifle is a priceless tool as long as it has an equally effective operator using it. Happy Thanksgiving

If you are not close to to outdoor range for zeroing - do you have any advice on zeroing at indoor ranges? They are typically 50 ft ~15yards. As usual your information is gold. Keep up the good work Mark!

This is great. So your 50 yard zero looked fantastic on paper compared to the 36 yard zero on paper. And I was sold on it. But! I have EOTECH on unity riser. To compensate for that height, would you recommend a 100 yard zero! Thanks for your time and I believe your channel will grow!

It depends on a few factors. I absolutely think you should track it at both 100 and at 50 and see which is the flattest for longest.

@@jbstraininggroup3640 I’m fortunate that I live on a large piece of land in a rural area, most people aren’t. Most guys don’t get a chance to shoot longer range until they sing up for a class which is most likely why you’re so many varying zeros in your classes. Just a thought….. 🤷🏻‍♂️ This video is a great explanation of why it’s so important to confirm. So many people rely on charts and internet heresy. I definitely learned something. Thanks for that.

36 yards is the best "combat" zero..we're talking about hitting a person's torso from 7 yards to 300 yards and you just hit that torso. We are talking about assault rifles and not precision sniper rifles. I'm not about hitting the guy three times in the eye at 300 yards. I just need to hit the torso anywhere. A lot of people should realize that.. 36 yard zero gives me the ability to grab the rifle and shoot at the target without having to think about where and how to aim. whenever I aim for mid-torso and I always hit the waistline..and that's about it. If you want to shoot from 0 to 300 yards with an assault rifle, I say buy a different rifle and especially a different caliber

@@jbstraininggroup3640 You can't say, and you have to admit it... that one zero is better than another... everyone has a rifle for something different, everyone is comfortable with something different, everyone has different preferences, everyone has different lengths of ranges they shoot at, etc., etc. a lot also depends on the given rifle, ammunition, twist, other possible influences as a variable.. With my rifles and red dot, 16" barrels, 69 grain bullets, twist...36 yards zero I ALWAYS HIT WITHOUT THINKING. I'm not a sports shooter, I don't need to shoot only ten centers, I need to hit the target... Each zero is just about that person's personal preferences, nothing more
