I agree. It's true that she was an enabler but that's only because she never had a daughter plus her husband was an ass. She didn't force Beth to stay in the kitchen, but instead encouraged her to play chess. That's rare considering their timeline when the stereotype is women should stay at home.

I don't find her particularily confident. Brutally honest, unabashedly herself, yes. Probably autistic. But very insecure. She protects herself with spikes. Confident people don't need to do that. I'm saying this because I relate to her.

Yes as a character I love her but if this was in real life no one would like her with that attitude.

The adoptive mother was an enabler. She enabled both the best and worst of Beth: supporting her chess passion and prioritizing it over everything else, and also encouraging and permitting her drinking and partying. It's possible a more steady and disciplined parental figure would have saved Beth a lot of turmoil, but also would have probably greatly hindered her Chess career in the process. The adoptive mother was exactly the kind of person Beth needed to reach the extremes she was capable of, both high and low.

My only issue was advertising it as a "struggle with addiction". Her struggle was with abandonment and isolation. The substance abuse was just how she tried to deal with it. Once she had her "family" (Townes, Benny, and Harry, plus the rest of the guys), she didn't need the pills or booze. Add in her acceptance as a part of the chess community in Russia, and she'd found her place, and happiness. Her initial reaction to Townes, Benny & Harry when she was in Moscow pretty much said it all. How she reacted to the congratulations from Luchenko, a.k.a. the sheepdog, and Borgov, plus being embraced by the Russian chess players in the park, after beating their champion was special, too. They were all chess players. Not Russians or Americans, just chess players.

@@donhunt7341 well aren’t all addictions triggered by events, or issues, or mental illness, or something in someone’s life? It wasn’t just a story about addiction but definitely it was a part of the story and how she was able to overcome it will the help of her family and her own strength.

Her mistake is that she used an "ee" sound in "seegrayim". The actual sound you're supposed to use doesn't exist in English, only in Russian. I can't even type it out in English letters, lol. It sounds like a combination between u and e, if that makes sense.

Exactly throughout the whole series untill that point I was waiting for her to go back and visit him Until she found out he died. Then we get to know that she didn't even pay him back his ten bucks (if she did he probably would've taped it on his wall too) I love beth but for what she did to him, I hated her. I suppose that's what makes her flawed.

I presumed that was why she broke down in the car afterwards, because she never got the chance to thank him. And why at the end she sits down and plays a carbon copy of him in Russia, as a nod to his influence.

Beth didnt know how mr shaibel really care n proud for her since he was always so cold in front of her ...had beth know it earlier, she will sure visit him often ...he is also the reason why beth finally back n won the game bcoz after her step mother died, she always felt unloved n unwanted...she won the game n played a chess with an old men in the end, showed how much she respect n remembered him always

Having his king stuck in the corner and the bishop pair one move away from cutting off all it's escape routes seems very, very bad, and something that even as an unrated player I would have immediately noticed was about to ruin my day.

I loved how even the show obviously handled that with her getting mad at her life magazine interview for only writing about her being a woman instead of her playing or Mr. Shaibel. Media nowadays make the mistake of only focusing on the being a woman part for the easy money and end up being a disservice and 2 dimensional instead. This show was so good.

My understanding was that Alma was well aware of the lie the moment she sees Beth. I felt like Alma was just humoring the lady at the orphanage, but played along and we know the husband didn't care eitherway. I thought she started jr. High school, but regardless of her age she's smarter than the average kid. Alma catches on and after becoming her manager, they don't care about Beth's schooling since it's clear she doesn't need it.

I believe that in the book, Beth skips two full grades. When she gets to the point that she finishes early, she actually spends her time playing the janitor. At first, the school didn't like it, but after she won her first tourney, they didn't say much of anything, given that there was so much publicity. Though I do wonder if the show ever reveals that, at some point, she goes back to her high school, after finding out Mr. Shabel, the janitor, passed away. One of the more touching moments in the book was when she found a scrapbook he had started, in which he had followed her and collected every article he could about her chess career. The one question I have is, where the hell is Jolene? For a network to follow the book so well, and this video to not show a black actress because Jolene was a black character, and central to Beth's life, is a bit disappointing from a network that claims to be inclusive, yet isn't. I mean, when the book has this character who helps Beth train before going to Russia for 5 months, and this character isn't included on the show, something doesnt sit right. And just for correction's sake, Jolene also had a VW Beetle in the book, as she was the one to take Beth back to the high school when Mr. Shabel, the janitor, passes away.
