Bethany, my heart broke for you a little because you have to squeeze writing in between baby and dishes! So a reminder that creative thinking/dreaming also happens when doing the dishes, and hanging out the wash, the book is always forming. Also setting the timer for 10 minutes and writing fast is a good use of snatched time. Glad I found your vlogs. You are a hero (heroine) to many already.

My books are epic fantasy and tend to run 100k or so words, so take some time to draft. I like that you're setting "realistic" goals. I'm trying that for my current work and giving myself this quarter. Having a strong outline and dividing scenes up by weeks, I think I can draft book 3 this quarter. So far, I've stayed on track! Hoping I've been realistic, too. Good luck with tackling your book 3 :)

Yeah. I'm 100,000 words in but am only about halfway through and now stuck. Searching for a way to bust through. Just trying to find the damn time. Difficult. It's not my living so it is never the priority, sadly.

@@t0dd000 I get that. If you're only halfway through, you could consider dividing it into two books and restructuring a but. That's what I did and it was a huge help. I didn't realize I was writing a series until I was 250k in. Restructuring it as several books helped get past the block and was motivating bc I had almost two completed novels and a third draft to work with.

I loved watching this! It can be so hard as a parent to set realistic goals, but also so important. You're doing AMAZING. And you've inspired me to actually try and map out my May - I've always wanted to, but my life is so changeable that I always worry I'll just throw it out the window. My kids are all older, but I home school so there is always a lot going on. Good luck for May!

Thanks Cassie! :D I really appreciate that, it can be so easy for me to take accidental breaks lol, so this definitely helps. Hope it'll be a helpful strategy for you too! (And p.s. I was homeschooled, so I know how much work that is, keep rocking it, you're amazing!)

You gotta do what works for you! And vlogging is super working for you!! Having a completed book by May 31st sounds like such a crazy goal but you've set it up so that you've done all the legwork, all you gotta do is write it out. You're gonna kill it! I can't wait for more vlogs on this journey!

Hi - I just stumbled across this video and you have inspired this mama SO MUCH! Such amazing hints and tips for writing with a baby; my boy is 5 months old and I MISS writing. Thank you so much for sharing and for giving me the kick I need to take responsibility for making time for my own creativity and schedule. A quick question, do you have a specific video about the note book system you use? The spreads really seem helpful for keeping you on track.

I run a farm and I am a real estate agent. My schedule gets completely wrecked on a daily basis (no consistency). I can't write effectively in the evening. And I don't do well with interruptions and it takes a solid 30 minutes to settle into a writing groove. So working on getting some sort of process going. At the moment I think the only way I can do it is to get up at 4am.

It's tough! I have a baby plus a ton of other work on top of writing so I can relate to struggling to find time. Getting up extra early has been my go to as well. It might not be sustainable every day, but it works!

I wish you the best of luck on getting that book started! I really like how you track your writing time. I feel like I'm always just trying to find the time to write that when I have the time, I plunge into it without tracking anything, but your method could be useful for me to see how long it actually takes to write a book. Thanks so much for sharing!

I'm curious, how do you decide on word count of each chapter?
@BethanyAtazadeh
@BethanyAtazadeh 2 жыл бұрын
It's totally personal preference, so my thoughts are also just my personal method, but I typically notice my chapters land between 1,000 and 4,000 words. But it's not a requirement, I do what the chapters need. And every once in a while I like to break the "rules" and have some fun, so I do have a chapter with just one sentence in The Cursed Hunter, just like Holly Black has done in her bestselling novels! :)

Please know that many famous authors, living and dead, count/counted words written every day. Graham Greene would write exactly five hundred words every day of his life. Not 499, not 501, but exactly 500. He'd stop in the middle of sentences. Hemingway counted his words, too, and aimed for a minimum of 500 per day. Stephen King does 2000 words every day. George RR Martin does 0 words, every day. America's greatest author, Mark Twain, zealously guarded his word count: “In 1897, when we were living in Tedworth Square, London, and I was writing the book called “Following the Equator” my average was eighteen hundred words a day; here in Florence, (1904), my average seems to be fourteen hundred words per sitting of four or five hours.” If tracking your productivity is good enough for Mark Twain, it's good enough for the rest of us. I don't do outlines except in my head, but I can easily understand why having outlines, etc, helps keep track of what you're writing and makes for a cleaner first draft that doesn't need major surgery to be readable. The point is: authors need structure. Publishers' deadlines don't apply to independent authors, so you have to make your own goals and stick to them. Otherwise your word count will be the same as George RR Martin, but without all those piles of loot from his tv projects.

@@BethanyAtazadeh Everybody else is ragging on poor old George, I just wanted to get my shot in. The true test of an author is how they handle great success: does the fire still burn or does it go out? George has lost his passion for the project that made him famous. It's his darling and he can kill it if he wants to.
