@@andreabradley5837 .. I was lucky to be turned onto it in 1976.. a guy giving me some bass playing tips spun the album for me and Priest immediately became my fave new band.. I finally got to see them live when i saw 9 of their shows in 1981 on the point of entry tour with Iron Maiden and Whitesnake as well

I think it's too early for Painkiller. Let her see a bit of Priest's evolution first. They went through so many different phases until showing every other metal band of the 90s how it's done and delivering a complete and utter knockout punch.

There aren’t any good live versions of painkiller because he blew out his voice during recording and toured before letting it recover. Every video of that tour sounds horrible because of it.

A really interesting exercise from a vocal perspective would be to have her listen to Priest's version and then Death's version. because it shows how adding vocal distortion can change the sound. The notes are essentially the same (chuck's performance on that track is unbelievable) but adding a little more rasp and piling on the vocal distortion makes for a more aggressive vibe.

In recent years that has become my favorite JP song. Of course, I'm 60 now, so it really hits home. When he's screaming I can't go on at the end it really sounds like the beautiful disintegration of a psyche.

I saw them twice in my very young years, and I can say you could hear every single word clearly, and his voice was powerful on every level. Some of the best live vocals I've seen, and I've seen a lot of live music during my life. You know when a band makes sure you can hear the vocalist so clearly, there is a reason. Rob is a Master, no doubt.

That version rules but unless someone is hearing that song *after* knowing how the original sounds on the album version they're not going to realize how amazing that performance is really.

i love that she's only picking the live versions of these metal classics to scrutinize. almost all complaints are fixed in the studio but you can only ever fully judge someone musician to musician based on a single discrete unedited performance

Often the sound of a discreet live recording is at the mercy of the quality of the equipment being used to capture the sound, the acoustics of the room and the competence of the technicians. A lot of the short comings inherent in the source material here is due to the fact that the engineers had no idea what a Judas Priest is, no concept of progressive blues dynamics and would have had to be time travelers or oracles to anticipate the heavy metal paradigm which didn’t exist yet in the world when they recorded this. This band is not very similar to James Taylor or Jim Croce are they.

I saw them on the Sad Wings tour, at Birmingham Town Hall, it cost a quid to get in, they were more varied in those days, much better than the generic speed metal band they became in my opinion

@@Clivegsd Judas made speed metal since 1977 I mean how it can be generic when they did that before the so called Speed metal as Official movement . I agree that the 70s period was more creative and diverse....but the speed metal argument is invalid . They laid the ground for this . I mean even Tyrant live is speed metal , the live version of Genocide has speed metal double kick in your face moment while guitar duet Call For the Priest , Dissident agressor , Exciter ... that laid the ground for the speed , thrash or whatever ... Its not just Classic heavy metal .. And that mean nothing because thoses 1976-1979 , it was révolution after revolution .. it was new , it wasnt classic .

OMG! I'd almost forgotten that Rob Halford used to have hair! You should see him live : he delivers absolutely 100% the whole time. And I mean that in terms of the energy and commitment he puts into his singing. Also, I had to chuckle at your comments about the clothes. Just a few years later, they would come on stage in black leather with shiny steel studs.

Halford's singing is a touch awkward here because of the live-in-the-studio environment where the amplification of the instruments is far lower than on a real stage. As a consequence, Halford has to hold back all the time to not overpower the band. This was recorded for the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test in 1976, by the way.

This is one of my favorite songs of theirs. Really shows off his beautiful voice and range wonderfully. Really a unique band. In the early 1980’s I was a teen and was getting into Metal. Every week I would find a new favorite band. That was until I bought Screaming for Vengeance. The vocal range was insane and it added a element to the metal sound. Judas Priest will always be my favorite band. Rob can sing a ballad or scream to the Heavens. Metal God!

Gillan gets a bad rep for his stint with the Sabs, but he had had vocal nodule surgery, and the doctor warned him not to sing at all until he'd fully recovered. He disobeyed doctor's orders and permanently wrecked his voice. I don't think David Coverdale ever dared to try to sing Child In Time.

If you listen to the studio version,the high note he hits is an octave higher.... He is able to produce over tone when he hits high notes...he got better at singing live with time, but this was in his real early days

Hi Beth, just a quick comment about his not quite perfect pitch at the beginning. So this recording was live on the "Old Grey Whistle Test" tv show from for 70's. Basically the band had sound issues during their stint on the show. The reason being they were used to playing a lot louder. Anyways, the environment for them at this point in their career was pretty alien to them and they've spoke about it many times so I imagine Rob Halford wasn't quite 100% comfortable during this. On the record he sings it perfectly and there was no autotune back then :) Great videos BTW keep up the good work.

I love that song and Judas Priest in general, but to be honest, I haven't seen any good live performance of this song. I think it's just impossible to perform it even remotely as good as the studio version is, the difference is enormous.

Painkiller is a great song, but vocally I think it demonstrates how much Rob had lost from his peak in the 1970s.

They were all from the same roots . Which is Blues , Soul screamers and stuff .. But with an european operatic heritage . Robert plant was influential , but he took a lot from steve marriot . As far Judas priest scream goes .. its more on Deep purple side ... With Vibrato . Plant didnt that . On Glenn hugheson Trapeze era espacially Jury , And medusa .. as well than the riffing its quite close to What kind of song Priest did in thoses first 2 albums ..

Should have went with the studio version to hear the range at the end. Priest mentioned in a interview they had to limit things for the show.

@@arbaaz9992 From what I remember of the interview(I believe it's on the Metal Works 74-94 video) Tops of the Pops didn't really play harder rock and told Priest the audience wouldn't 't respond well. I hope I'm remembering correctly if not give a shout back saying you're full of shit. I don't mind.

@@gordonmccullagh8675 Not TOTP, but Old Grey Whistle Test, a show which generally showcased much less heavy acts. I believe they threatened to cut them if they went above a certain volume or too much distortion, hence the slightly strangled guitar tone and lighter drumming. In one shot, you can clearly see that the techs have hung a thick slab of carpet over the front of the guitar amp to keep things "under control". I actually like this version, though.

@@Frustratia you're right it's still a good version and for all the reasons you mentioned (I didn't go into detail) that's why Priest had to play that way. Did I confuse the grey whistle set with totp? whoops I am sorry about that.

I think Rob Halford on the first couple albums (which this clip is from) was still trying to develop his voice. I think it's like a kid learning to drive in a super car. Rob Halford and the whole band quickly realise who they are and then really begin to hone their sound.

I think this live version is unfortunate compared to the studio version, since he sings the high part in a completely different key here and the song goes too slow for his singing. It's like he started out the high part in the original key but then thought "Damn, it's gonna be too loud in this setting if I continue with this".

Check out the song "Take Hold of the Flame" by the band Queensrÿche. Their singer Geoff Tate is one of the absolute best vocalists of all time. he was trained in opera, and used that to develop his sound.
