Nobody has been able to sing this song as Bette Midler does. This song is timeless and the emotion in which she vocalizes this song will never be duplicated in my opinion.

@@writerinfact1768 yes, Janis does a great job, I totally agree, but I guess I just prefer the raspiness of Bette’s voice. Her voice gives the song just a tad bit more edge and sadness, in my opinion. Different interpretations and likes, it’s all good. Beautiful song

Some say love, it is a river That drowns the tender reed Some say love, it is a razor That leaves your soul to bleed Some say love, it is a hunger An endless aching need I say love, it is a flower And you, its only seed It's the heart, afraid of breaking That never learns to dance It's the dream, afraid of waking That never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken Who cannot seem to give And the soul, afraid of dying That never learns to live When the night has been too lonely And the road has been too long And you think that love is only For the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter Far beneath the bitter snows Lies the seed that with the sun's love In the spring becomes the rose

I watched it when I was 7 or something when it was aired at late evening, then I forgot about it and could not find it for years. ChatGPT helped me to find the movie again. And I found out this performance. Oh my god. this performance is breathtaking, jawdropping, tearshedding and inspiring. For years I did not feel so inspired by music. To a point I almost believed music cannot work on me anymore. Thanks to this I was wrong. The Rose was written and sung by singer-songwriter, actress Amanda McBroom. It hit the charts when it was sung by the Divine Miss M for the movie by the same name. It was based loosely on the life of Janis Joplin. Bette Midler sung it so hauntingly beautiful. Nobody (imho) has performed it better not even the songwriter.

Had my near-death motorcycle accident here in New Zealand in 1990 when I was 26. My injuries were horrific. Ultimately I lost my entire left leg as high as possible; correct term is hemipelvectomy - my hip and left pelvis was amputated. Spent 3 weeks in the ICU [intensive care unit] of 2 hospitals and a total of 101 days in hospital. I suffered several serious internal injuries as well. Lost count of the number of scars. Ever since I have suffered chronic nerve pain [neuromas - groups of nerves] around the stump area even though there is no stump. Pain is controlled via an extreme cocktail of meds including the strongest legally prescribed opiates and a high dose. Tried everything to control the pain - you name it I've tried it. Currently I am attempting to wean off an anti depressant - this could be the start of a new 'me' hopefully. So to Bette Midler's song 'The Rose'. Yep...one of a very few that stirs my soul to the point of weeping. So Bette Midler - thank you thank you thank you for providing the BEST pain relief therapy of all. Your song stirs this germ's emotions to the limit. Love is indeed; THE ROSE.

My first child, a daughter, was due on March 14th, but died intrauterine (stillbirth). I delivered her on Jan 4 and she was buried on Jan 7. I always play this song on those dates, because it fit. "Just remember, in the winter (Jan 4, Jan 7), far beneath the bitter snows, lies the seed that with the suns love, in the spring (Mar 14) becomes the rose." There is a lamb and a rose on her headstone. Thank you Bette!
