The whole episode about Mike's son just had me tearing up. The acting and writing was absolute perfection.

i really like season 1 and often revisit it because to me it's "comfort media". it's a pocket of time before things really start going to shit. before we learn how much of a villain Chuck is. A point in time in which Jimmy and Kim's relationship is loving but healthy. A time when Jimmy's heart has a LITTLE weighing on it but you wouldn't call it broken.

Seeing Mike breaking down, saying he broke his boy, man, there are some things that are too much for me and this one is absolutely one of them.

I agree Rich’s actor is class. He nails that part, he is real and very believable

My list 1. Ep. 6 Five-O (still my personal favorite episode of the show) 2. Ep. 9 Pimento (the acting is simply Oscar-worthy) 3. Ep. 2 Mijo (the exchange between Tuco and Jimmy is easily the best combo of humor/suspense in the franchise) 4. Ep. 3 Nacho (an episode that is equal to breaking bad in terms of tension) 5. Ep. 8 RICO (one of the funniest and heartwarming episodes of the show) 6. Ep. 10 Marco (a very decent season finale, just not as good as the previous episode) 7. Ep. 4 Hero (a really good episode in terms of exploring the relationship between Howard and Jimmy) 8. Ep. 7 Bingo (the scene where Jimmy puts the Kettlemans in their place is very satisfying and the ending is quite dramatic, but overall this episode is just alright) 9. Ep. 1 Uno (an unpopular take, but I don't find this episode particularly impressive. It's just a 50-minute torture porn for Jimmy with no payoff until the next episode, although the flash forward scene and Jimmy's first major scam were great. It's only my personal opinion though) 10. Ep. 5 Alpine Shepherd Boy (this episode had lots of funny jokes, but that's about it. It's mostly an okay filler.)

I read somewhere from Vince that he let the Kettleman's improv most of their stuff because he liked their characters.

I honestly loved season 1 because (hate me if you will) but I loved the breaking bad cameos and to find out Gene was working at Cinnabon made me smile from ear to ear! Thanks for this kiwi! 🥝🙌🏻

One of my favorite moments in Rico is when Chuck ends the meeting by saying 20 million or we'll see you in court i love how we get a glimpse of what a badass lawyer Chuck was before he let his vendetta against Jimmy ruin him

This season really is remarkable. The sequel and prequel timline is a brilliant way to go with this character. And I have to disagree. Chuck does not care about Jimmy. He never did. Marco even tried to tell Jimmy this. Chuck always held his brother back. He's the reason slipping Jimmy is a crooked lawyer. Had he never held Jimmy back from HHM, Saul Goodman would never exist. Kim says it best to Chuck, Jimmy cuts corners, but you made him this way. My point is Slipping Jimmy was always slipping Jimmy. But he would have never been Saul Goodman if Chuck didn't make him go to Albuquerque and work in HHM's mail room. He would have stayed small time slipping Jimmy. Instead, trying to impress and satisfy his brother Chuck, he passed the bar exam. I'm glad Chuck did what he did to himself in Lantern. Jimmy is better off without Chuck in his life.

Great tier list! Though I disagree about the Kettlemans. I found them annoying the first time I watched but upon rewatch I find their scenes hilarious. The two characters go so well together and Betsy's delusions are just really funny.

I’m realizing that Slipping Jimmy acts fast, without considering all the options. i.e dumpster diving, before looking at all the bins. Kim analyzes all the options, before acting prematurely.

I love how in-depth this is and how much it goes through the whole season, great walk down memory lane as while I've rewatched some of these episodes more recently, some others I haven't seen since around the time they aired! (I also shot you a DM on Reddit and would love to chat more about some later seasons/episodes before you reach their tier lists if you're open to it!) Some specific thoughts I have on this video: 1) This seems to be a hot take given its rating on some sites, your placement of it here, and a lot of the rankings I'm seeing in the comments (at a glance I see four lists in the comments and four #10 placements for it), but "Alpine Shepherd Boy" was and remains a personal favorite episode for sure -- not S-tier, but A+-tier for me. I do agree that the beginning jokes are mostly wastes of time and awkwardly paced (we spend, like, ages on the one guy who's trying to establish his own nation or whatever, and while I was watching live I was like "Wait am I supposed to care about this guy?", I don't enjoy the sex toilet joke much either, and the whole thing would have worked better as like a 2-minute montage at the most) BUT the episode still more than redeems itself for me due to the Jimmy/Chuck content (you asked here if deep dives on Chuck/Jimmy or Chuck's condition would be welcome; Chuck overwhelmingly was/is the heart and soul of the show for me, so I'm a firm yes on anything like that.) To me, the debate here over whether to have him committed is where the show finally, REALLY hits its stride. I still remember watching it live and being like.... man, I don't know what I expected out of this show, but I know I DIDN'T expect a deep dive on familial dynamics surrounding Jimmy's brother's severe mental illness - and the entire thing was handled very well and so tastefully. It was such a rich depiction of some really serious dynamics and that scene alone - and its importance, imo, in moving the show towards the tone it would eventually nail - outweighs the weird filler of the early montage for me to make it a strong episode. 2) Glad to see more love for Boutsikaris! I LOVE his performance as Schweikart. It might not have the total emotional depth of some other roles in the broader BCS Cinematic Universe but the guy just looks and sounds perfect for the role. The more of him we get in this final season, the better, imo. Any time he's on screen I'm happy with it. RICO is a big favorite episode of mine, but I honestly wouldn't have remembered why until watching this; I just knew I loved it, lol. But getting to see Chuck and Jimmy work together is huge in the context of the season and perhaps even bigger in the context of the show, forgot how much I loved that bit of them putting the shredded documents together, and in general after Alpine Shepherd Boy sets up some great mental illness content, and Five-O is great but a bit of a big deviation from the usually scheduled programming, RICO is where the show really starts delivering hard on that early promise. Easy A-tier for me. I think RICO/AlpShepBoi are my #3 and #4 of the first season, behind what I consider the pretty obvious top two of Five-O/Pimento. 3) I'll be honest that I'm surprised you even considered putting Pimento anywhere below S-tier. Of course it ended up there eventually so not going to rake you over the coals for it or anything, but to me that's pretty much the quintessential S-tier BCS episode up until Chicanery. I like the Mike scene for sure but don't love it AS much as you do -- but the way you feel about it is basically the way I feel about the Chuck/Jimmy dialogue at the end of the show, which by now is music to my ears and I could practically quote it verbatim from how many times I've watched it. Every line of dialogue is delivered flawlessly and hits the exact emotion it meant to, it's a colossal shift in the show's dynamics where the true plot of S1 is retroactively revealed and Chuck morphs into the antagonist, and it's where the show really splits open. Just absolutely phenomenal and while I've praised ASB/RICO for getting us out of the "early S1 weirdness" slump, I think Pimento was and remains the watershed moment of the entire series, like its equivalent of BrBa 1x05 or even 2x12 (or, for a more esoteric comparison, Survivor 1x07). 4) Great, great thought on 1x10 tying the season's flashbacks together with its current timeline!! That's a GREAT analysis that makes me come out more favorable on the whole season and want to revisit that episode specifically!, as I think I've underrated it a bit. Great stuff and I would love to talk more with you about this show. Season 2 remains my single favorite season, though 3x10 is far and away my favorite episode of either BrBa or BCS (even including Ozymandias). My S-tier of episodes off the top of my head would be 2x09, 2x10, 3x05, 3x09, 3x10, 4x01, 4x02, 4x10, 5x03 (a bit of a deep cut compared to the other obviously iconic ones on the list, but I just think it was supremely well put together), and 5x08, though I'm sure there's an argument for some episodes like "Bad Choice Road", "Wexler v. Goodman", "Something Unforgivable", "Quite a Ride", maybe "Expenses", and probably some late S4 ones to rank higher than 5x03 and 4x02. But there's a very clear S tier to me that's felt very evident when a new episode lands alongside it. My season ranking would be 2 > 4 > 3 > 5 > 1 I think, but 3 and 4 could switch depending on the day. 3 has higher highs but 4 is a more thematically unified product overall imo?, but both are phenomenal obviously. Tbh a major season why S2 is my favorite is that I LOVE all the flashbacks we get there. Jimmy pocketing a couple dollars after talking to the con man made my jaw drop as much as any explosion or death in any show I've ever seen, I was stunned, and the 2x10 cold open is just sublime. Either one could have, entirely on their own, served as enough great television to start enough conversations for a full week to justify the entire timeslot... and then we got more and more episode after them, too. Great stuff. I think, but this is a pretty off-the-cuff generalization, that maybe part of why S2 works the best for me is that S1 reveals the Jimmy/Chuck dynamic; S3 dissolves it; but S2 delves into the WHY of it and feels like a constant tug-of-war between the two for my sympathy and support, and I feel the most ambivalent towards Jimmy in this season. After it, he's burned my goodwill; in S1, he's largely outright likable; but S2 finds him in that middle territory, I think?

I’m gonna go from worst season 1 episode to the best season 1 episodes 1. Episode 5, Alpine Shepherd Boy 2. Episode 7, Bingo 3. Episode 8, Rico 4. Episode 4, Hero 5. Episode 3, Nacho 6. Episode 1, Uno 7. Episode 2, Mijo 8. Episode 9, pimento 9. Episode 10, Marco 10. Episode 6, Five-O Every episode is still good.

These are perfect. BCS is one of the great shows of all time, and part of that is because it's so slow and artfully done, but that makes it less a candidate for rewatches, unlike, say, The Wire or The Sopranos, or even Breaking Bad. So these recaps give me the perfect re-watch pace.

The first season is heavy in nostalgia for me since it came out the summer of 2015, which was a great year personally. Of course, life has gotten a lot harder and darker since then like each progressive season. Looking back at the events of season 1 after watching the 6th make me feel bittersweet, like I'm looking at the good old times for both the characters and my life.

Funny enough the skateboard drag is a real thing I used to do to get to high school. I had one long straight road to follow for a mile and a half and would often grab onto SUV’s because I knew they were heading to the school to drop off other kids.

I love how the name 'Alpine Shepherd Boy' stands out amid the 'X -o' title convention of Season 1. I was actually disappointed they didn't do something similar in Season 2 . . . if such a thing had been possible. Something like, 'Sling', 'Ring', 'Badda-Bing', 'Ka-Ching!', 'Bling', I dunno . . . I also love the first two of Season 6 - 'Wine and Roses', 'Carrot and Stick' (which I guess will be an episode focused on Mike and Nacho). I hope they continue that 'X & Y' theme for every episode in the last season.

Seeing this after seeing your Breaking Bad retrospectives is so odd, it's kind of alien to see you blow through an episode in 4 minutes Anyway, I did make a list 10. Uno (8/10) A very good introduction to the characters, but I just kind of don't think it has a ton going for it 9. Alpine Shepherd Boy The Chuck stuff is very good, but my favorite part is Jimmy's clients early on tbh, it's hilarious and some of the funniest stuff in the series 8. Marco (8/10) Marco's death is good (quality wise, I'm not sick), I like seeing their scams, the bingo scene is also very good, and I find that montage extremely fun and creative, but it kinda feels disconnected from the season. And it reminds me of the structure BoJack Horseman has with its seasons, with the penultimate episode being the episode everything's been building to, with the finale being more of a breather and setting up the next season 7. Hero (8/10) I like the conflict with Howard, the billboard "saving", and the hilarious cutaway to the neighborhood seeing Chuck run away with her newspaper, it's honestly just a really solid episode all around (I also forgot the camera crew showed up this early on on my rewatch of it and they don't show up until the next season why I love them) 6. Bingo (8/10) I love the scene where Mike takes their money and the scene where Jimmy talks to the Kettlemans, those are honestly fantastic, and all the other scenes are also really good 5. Mijo (9/10) #10-6 are really good and even great, but with #5, we go to fantastic. The highlight of this episode is obviously with Tuco, though I do like everything else with the lawyer montage and the ending with Nacho. And yeah, the Tuco stuff is fantastic with Jimmy talking Tuco out of killing the skaters being seemingly unbelievable and a real showcase of Jimmy's skills with persuasion 4. Nacho (9/10) It's honestly a bit unbelievable that this is the 3rd episode, because this episode has an immense sense of scale and a good mystery, with most of it being moreso about about the finding of the Kettlemans than what happened to them 3. RICO (9/10) I did not expect a story about elder law to be this investing. Everything with this episode is extremely investing and pretty much never loses momentum. Also, Jimmy dumpster diving only to realize that it was in the recycling is one of the funniest moments in the series 2. Pimento (10/10) Yeah I don't really know what to say, everything is fantastic, from the Mike stuff, to the Sandpiper stuff, to of course the Chuck reveal. It's all just so fantastic 1. Five-O (10/10) There was no competition. Pimento is just barely a 10/10, this is an 11/10. The stuff where Jimmy's involved is great, but the stuff with Mike & Stacey is fantastic, the flashback is phenomenal, and the final scene is one of the best in the series As a whole, I'd give the season as a whole a 9/10, a relatively quaint but extremely investing season

It wasn't until you called s1 nostalgic did I realize wow this shows first season was so long ago to the point I was in school when it aired god damn, it took me two more years past the air date (til S3) for me to give better call Saul a chance cuz matpat made a video on chuck and I thought it seemed interesting. God the scene where Mike takes the gun is probably the funniest scene in the entire show imo
