I came to your channel about 6 months after I got severely beat up. I did gymnastics all my life and was beat up as a 16 year old. Older athletes held me in a full nelson and took turns throwing hard punches on and off for over 30 minutes. I was scared shitless and felt totally vulnerable and helpless. Held in a full nelson shirtless with my whole torso wide open for targeting got my attention. Unfortunately I turn out to be very good at taking hard punches. I did NOT think about learning to fight. I only thought how to build up my abdominals to be rock hard. I'm age 22 now and did gymnastic for 14 years. After getting beat up I moved further from gymnastics and more into weightlifting for hypertrophy--especially legs. But I decided to check out channels on how to fight and your channel was hugely helpful. I think you encouraged me in emails or comments--you said I could build up my abs all I want to take punches but being kicked in the liver or kidneys is totally something else. Message received. I still get up training to take punches but I did not pretend that it would help me in a fight. Anyway seeing this video--that was my situation why I came to your channel.

Thank you for this. I’ve shadowboxed/shadow wrestled for 30 minutes per solo session for years instead of running. For a 48 year old, my cardio is great, and I outlast many of the much younger students I’ve taught. Dr. Israel (bodybuilder and BJJ brown belt) has talked about how it’s more intelligent to do sport-specific movements for your cardio than simply running, and Ramsey Dewey and other coaches have said the same. It just makes sense. Thanks again!

Honestly you dont need to. What helps me is to imagine an absolute tank keeps coming towards me no matter what i throw at him. So i mainly focus on moving a lot, side steps, pendulum steps, ducking, weaving... then throwing some fast 2 punch combinations before moving away. So dont worry too much about throwing them fancy combinations. Rather focus on NOT standing still. Always move. Always mix up your guard from high to cross guard to framing to throwing maybe 1 or 2 hands. Hope that helps a bit!!
@fighttips
@fighttips 14 күн бұрын
Love Dennit's post. And the piggy back off of it: you technically don't have to throw ANY punches when you shadowbox. First round can be just footwork, feints, and defense. Second round can add on jab variations. Third round can be just the lead arm punches (hooks, uppercuts; high and low) Fourth round can add on the rear hand And so forth.

I know it's nowhere near the same, but because of my shattered left leg (motorcycle crash 11 years ago) I have to do the stationary bike instead. I try to get a minimum of 7 miles a day with heart rate between 130-140. It usually takes me about 42 mins to do that. Not as fit as I once was, but working on it. Still have ok hands and experience in grappling. Great video!

I learned and teach what is called the "2 Minute " partner drill. One person holds the focus mitts and moves around , and the other punches for 2 minutes . Either the mitt holder or a 3rd person calls out even numbers from 2 to 10 at random every few seconds and thats how many punches have to be thrown. For the final 10 seconds you punch non-stop. It doesn't seem like it , but by 1:30 your heart is pounding . A few rounds of this is and you're getting in great cardio plus learning to relax and not gas . I just haven't figured out how to duplicate it solo.

Hey, nice video. What sort of power/speed percentage do you punch through the air with? Just asking since I got some elbow strain lately. Not sure if got it from shadowboxing or burpees, probably it was dumbell cleans. Also when you run, how do you fit in sprints and intervals in a nice way along with your cardio longruns over a week? Thanks again for all your fighttips.

would u say u can somthing like this with hyongs? in my dojang we do something like the first hyong one time, the second hyong 2 times, the third hyongs three times. my sabeomnim gives echt form a specific exercise... for example, if u came to the 3third hyong, the first should be as fast as possible, the second as strong as possible and the thrid fast an strong as possible. when the 4th hyong starts there is something like, only punches hard, then the kick harder or as high as possible and so on... do think this chould also improve the cardio?

That's where his heart is. He doesn't want to be a fighter, that's all behind him now. He still trains, spar with world champion boxers, muay thai, and MMA fighters, for the same reason: to learn so that he has a lot more to teach.

Love shadow boxing, but for a guy with the mindset of always prepare to defend myself, I just wouldn't keep that hair style, no ear rings, no necklace either. Hair grabbing is a massive part that throw your daily training off the rail. Yes, you can have the idea and knowledge to how to deal with it, but long hair instantly put you in a big disadvantage no doubt.
