Better Than Harbor Freight?!?

Is there a dirt cheap anvil that is better than Harbor Freight's offering? In this episode I inspect, prep, and test the Acciaio 30 kilo anvil from any number of totally-not-shady ebay listings.
Unlike the HF "Chunk-O-Iron", this anvil is definitely made of cast steel (alloy unknown) and is close in surface hardness to my railroad rail if maybe a bit softer considering further use and experience off camera.
The anvil appears to be a hybrid between a German Double Horn and a French Pig. The face is approximately 4 1/2" wide, with a 3/4" Hardie hole, and a 5/8" Pritchel hole. At the time of purchase it was available for $115-130 on ebay or amazon.

The wire wheel attachment for an angle grinder is indeed potentially very dangerous. I would recommend wearing a full face shield and even a pair of safety glasses underneath. As for clothing, a leather welding jacket or apron would be a good idea as well. There is not much mass to the wires when they break off but many angle grinders spin at speeds of 18,000 rpms. I have had to pull wires out of my hands and ones that went thru a thick sweatshirt and into my skin, some as deep as 1/4", and didn't even feel them. Take no chances when it comes to your eyes. That one time you decide against protection could cost you your sight. Great job on the video. Very informative.

I like the fact you have so many affordable tools. Having them shows the new guys you can get started quickly without going broke. Upgrade when you have to. I'm still running most of the same Craftsman, black and decker, Ryobi and harbor freight tools I bought in my youth back in the 90's and early 2000's. Though I have upgraded to more pro-sumer brands in a few areas to get added features when I had the income to do so.

A great video of unboxing, customizing and actually using that anvil. I fast forward through a lot of these anvil videos but all of your content was interesting and added to the overall review of it. The wagon cam was even cool to watch. Very nice job. Subbed.

Would you recommend this anvil for a beginner hobby bladesmith?(with probably quite some misshits with the Hammer) I want to start bladesmithing and I want the hf one. There's also an 40kg and 50kg version. I'm into the 40kg because it's nice in the middle.

It is definitely relatively soft, and dents with miss hits. I try to avoid striking the anvil face directly if I can, so I don't know how it will really hold up over time, but I would expect it to be far better than the HF anvil. Make sure your hammer faces are properly dressed because larger radii on your hammer are less likely to dent the anvil with a missed strike... Almost every production hammer I have handled had a sharp chamfer around the face and would leave crisp gouges in an anvil or workpiece if left in it's factory condition, so dressing would make a big difference for the anvil as well as the consistency of the surface finish on the blades you are forging.

I chamfered the first 3 inches behind the horn on the edges to a total round. Helps to have the ability to make a hard corner and a soft round.

I have the same anvil and did he same with the stand, only difference is with the fixings, I used 4mm rubber strips under the feet then secured the lot with chains wrapped around the base and screwed into the stand.

About a year ago I bought an old Wall anvil. I can’t find a weight stamped on it and I haven’t weighed it but I’m guessing it’s at least 120 pounds and in very very nice shape. I had to give 425$ for it but man am I happy with the investment, they just don’t seem to make them like they used to.

They made good anvils back in the day... and they made garbage too. Seems like mostly only the good ones are still around. This is true about almost everything. South Bend used to make good lathes back in the day... but Atlas made complete garbage lathes at the same time. There will always be someone making good quality, and someone else making crap. That said, I have the larger and upgraded version of this anvil (132 lb / black) and it is very nice, nearly as nice as the ones I use in my night classes, and certainly good enough for me... and a whole lot of other people.

I only use wire wheels if I have on a leather welding apron and welding gloves, ear protection and googles, although I'm getting a faceshield too. Long but no loose sleeved shirt, all cotton.

It reduces the depth of cut for used cutting wheels if the attachment of the guard is bulky. That's the most noticeable hinderance for me.

The best part of a wire wheel like that is when it spits out a wire that punches through your leather welding glove and embeds into your knuckle. Ask me how I know. It was only a flesh wound thanks to the gloves but still...

I think it is the molding I got the same weird bump or filler thing on mine as well
@DragonHide94
@DragonHide94 3 жыл бұрын
I've wondered if it's from the main sprue which is then cut off and ground more or less flush. Though I kinda assumed it the mold would have a sprue where the two halves met. Which would place it on the visible seam running the length of the anvil, or maybe on the face which has to be ground anyway... Whichever it is, at least it's not body filler to repair voids like on the Harbor Freight anvil.

@DragonHide94
@DragonHide94 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely softer than my railroad rail, so misses leave dents, but it hasn't chipped or cracked. The horn is also potentially much softer than the face, but it seems most anvil have softer horns. Overall, it seems to be doing just fine.

When this happens, contact the shipper and make sure of the address it was delivered to. You may have a neighbor that got your anvil or even a similar street name but same house number got your anvil. They should have gis coordinates where they left it and it should match your address. Where I work at, we get our neighbors packages occasionally. It does happen.
