This is one of the cheapest guitars I've ever played. But is it any good? Today we look at the Harley Benton ST-20 BK Standard Series Strat Type guitar.

I bought one of these purely as an upgrade platform. Basswood body, Maple neck. I've replaced the pickups with lace sensor rainbow pack, the Nut with a Tusq Black, Tusq string trees and Graph tech Ratio Locking tuners. To top it all I've put on a Vega Trem which is just exquisite. The smoothest most in-tune trem I've ever used. The guitar came really well setup but i've set it up again for this new equipment and it plays like a 2k guitar. Bottom line is all the bear bones are there for a really excellent project guitar. My Ibanez RG570 I've had since 93 has a basswood body and I've never considered putting a new body on it. I've modded the pickups but other than that and a few fret dresses it's still stock. These £66 guitars are great out of the box but spend a bit of money on them and they are the equivalent of a lot more expensive guitar. I'd always recommend a professional setup after you've gone some way to upgrade a guitar. A fret dress and an action setup will transform a cheap or badly set up guitar into something you'll never want to part with. HB for the win. Seriously impressed. I play this guitar a lot and I have a 2001 PRS Custom 24 10 top on my wall. What I mean is it plays and sounds as inspiring. Luv and Peace.

Your comments on upgrading components? I did buy the wrong gauge Nut to begin with but when I researched a bit it all came together. Pickups are fine - the Nut is slightly odd but remember you do need to file down the nut eventually anyway. Tuners were fine but avoid the ones that are sized variably to not need string trees. The depth of the neck is different and they don't fit the HB headstock.

Strings are more important than I used to think. A friend got a couple of Gear4Music guitars and the strings were hideous, a quick upgrade and setup and they were okay. I don't think G4M is a patch on Harley Benton though.

I could put elastic bands on your guitars and they’d still sound great! Listened back to that p90 one earlier 😍 Yeah, you’re completely right, decent strings on these budget guitars makes all the difference.

Really? I had a g4m guitar for 4 years and thought about getting new strings for it, I am not sure how it is supposed to sound because I am a beginner and just recently got back into learning guitar, but I'll try it, Thank you!

i found out about the new harley benton r-446 on thomman website i was just looking as you do one night up poped up this new guitar that i did not know they were bringing out from what i have found out about the harley benton r-446 its a stripped back version of there amerrock guitar but on a budget i found out that by youtuber agurfish who worked on these new guitars with harley benton on one of his youtube its not the first time he has worked with harley benton mutch of there guitars he has worked with them on .i might have one of the harley benton r-446 by then my self but i would still like to know what you think about the new harley benton r-446 and i will let you know what i think of the harley benton r-446

If I'm not mistaken this is my guitar model. I got it used for 70€ but they told us the original price was 82€. Unfortunately I don't remember what model they told us it is and that's why I'm trying to find it. I started playing guitar on February 2021 and I'm self taught. I keep it in the case even though I've heard it's better not to. Recently I used an other guitar for about two months the costs around 350€ and the sound difference was huge. Maybe it's the price, maybe that it's second hand, maybe that it's staying in the case more than how much it's supposed to but do you guys think it's time to move on a better guitar?

I would take it to a guitar shop for the techies to have a look at it. The pickups are really what is responsible for your sound. If it you haven't set up your guitar then you should take it to a luthier to do that. If a setup doesn't work then you could consider changing the pickups as well.

Heey, I just wanted to ask, is this guitar good for playing songs from like Queen and GnR?

Hi! Should be alright for Queen songs. For GnR stuff, you can play it on this guitar, but will probably sound better on something with humbuckers. Maybe have a look at the HSS version of this guitar in matte black for something a bit more versatile.

I started with this guitar (my next cover will also be utilizing the ST-20) and this sounds way better than the epiphone. Every video with that les paul has proven that the sound is genuinely terrible.
