Jordan Peterson - How To Win Any Argument Every Time
The next time you find yourself embroiled in an argument with someone
that's contentious and uncomfortable say Institute the following rule, you don't get to respond to the person's claims until they've exhausted that
particular claim.
This does presume to some degree that you're dealing with a good faith act or even if they feel differently than you do you don't get to respond until you have recapitulated their Viewpoint and summarized it in a manner they find acceptable that's so treacherously sneaky that rule

You don’t have to win every argument. because it is impossible to win every time, you will lose sometimes, it is inevitable. Let your actions speak for themselves, not your words. simply because most of the time, words are nothing.

I dont want to win, I would rather lose. I already know the point I am making so there is nothing to be gained for me here. If I lose and the other person did have a convincing argument, then I have gained by new knowledge and gotten rid of a false idea, getting closer to truth. At the same time though, I want to live around people who do that same so, they need to lose to learn too heh.

ALSO; It's important to remember that, if you're talking to someone who seems combative, they might actually not be listening. They may just be hearing 'keywords' when you speak, then form a counter-argurment from these, while you're still speaking, and spew this out. This isn't truly listening, processing, comprehending, and replying, it's just you vs. their own ego - as are most arguments. At this point, there's no 'winning,' other than listening and really pausing and setting the pace. If this doesn't work, then simply re-itterate the point of the conversation/end goal, and ensure they're on that same path. There's less right/wrong, and more feeling with thus type of communication imo.

Great approach to an informal debate/argument. Responding to a claim with scorn and derision, even it’s an outrageous one, just causes people to become more cemented in their views. Making sure the person your arguing with knows you understand their position tells them that you care enough about them to hear them out. This approach is more likely to build bridges with opponents

If you're having a discussion with someone, there's no "lose" or "win". Both will lose or both will win. If you're thinking about losing or winning, then you don't care about the argument at all, you care about how people see you, it's just about feeding your ego. The only way to win an argument is when both you and the person you're arguing change your way of thinking, because if nobody changes how they think, isn't the discussion a loss of time?

I think one of the most important aspects of conversation is entertaining the idea that perhaps you might not be right in your position. To many people speak without being perceptive past their own bias. Even if you’re an expert at something, if you don’t value the ideas of others you’re no wiser than someone who knows nothing on the subject.

@@rhodesboyson1700 🤔 Yeah… that’s just not true lol. Understanding the brain and thus emotion and how that affects others has been very beneficial to make critical independent contributions to the alleviation of suffering. Social determinants of health, such as education, adequate food and nutrition, a reasonable standard of living, work opportunities and equitable treatment are prime examples. They help people with mental disabilities from moderate to severe and are proven to save at least $1 trillion globally with increase of productivity for people that include things for example, like anxiety and depression. To deny there isn’t a net benefit to society through psychology is just ignorant. If we can agree that it is beneficial, and that Jordan Peterson: as an accomplished professor and author of the subject, at least has knowledge and understanding of that field enough to teach it and write about it, (again, not really up for debate, it’s just a fact), then ultimately your statement boils down to simply being a Peterson hater to cope or you’re just incredibly ignorant. Either way, your statement couldn’t be further from the truth.

I highly recommend Chris Voss who is a master of negotiation to further your understanding of some of these concepts, especially in the form of listening to someone's argument and receiving it while showing them that you're listening. When Peterson mentions "it sounds like you're making x argument" it's taken almost directly from the playbook of Voss's approach which in his terminology is called "labeling". It's a highly effective tool and can easily help you approach difficult conversations and find more common ground with someone who has differing opinions.

The only weapon you have, metaphorically speaking, is your attention. Most women love drama, and if you give them attention when they try to stir up an argument, then you simply walk away for a day or 2. Ignore their texts until they beg you to come back. The attention you give them, is their reward. Don't reward bad behavior.

Not going to watch, but I will say if you're going into an argument thinking about "winning it" you've already lost. The objective is to convince your verbal sparing partner or allow yourself to be convinced by them, if they are indeed right, not batter them to the ground and dominate the discourse. If the only thing gained after an argument is both you and your opponent feeling completely in the right, you have both lost.

Didn't Stephen Covey day something like that 20 or 30 years ago in his 7 Habits book?

Wow, it's a hot feeling joining an argument. How do rules work when I can't refer them. Destruction is easier to happen

You can't win an argument every time. As the saying goes it is difficult to win an argument with a smart person but impossible to win an argument with a stupid one. There will always be someone that will not change their mind no matter what even if they know they are wrong

Imagine wanting to "win" an argument instead of going in with the goal to learn something from another's point of view or just simply agree to disagree because we all come from different backgrounds

Lately I’ve been encountering situations where it seems I’m constantly battling with making sure everyone’s feelings are okay. It’s like I can’t get passed that shit just to have a regular conversation like I have in the old days. It’s extremely annoying. Makes me want to just be alone.

To the video creator, I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the video title, as my interpretation of said video doesn't find JBP mentioning anything about winning arguments.

I have a rule. The second someone insults you in the argument. You have won. Walk away. You won.

Right, but how do you handle people that you give a chance to speak, and that's all they do, even when it's your turn, they consistently cut you off. It still results in an argument.

Very well, also: go back to more basic arguments if you want to win a spiritual discussion. Always, even more basic, if you're more basic. you win
