This video is better than all the other snare mic shootouts I've seen. Your snare drum actually sounds good, and we are able to hear the mic soloed, instead of only with a whole mix. My favorite is the Shure Beta 56. It really brings out the "pop" from the rim shots and sounds like it would cut well through any mix.

And bonus points to the beta 56 for being really easy to place on a crowded kit! Thanks for watching. I'm really glad you found the video helpful!

Idea for next time: insert image of mic during it's duration. People have easier remembering the different sounds when assiciating it to the image. Also, try to get the peak levels of the mics in the analyzer (from when all monitored hits have played through), layered with the realtime analyzer measure.
@BetterMixes
@BetterMixes 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I dig the mic image idea! I had thought of that at one point, but then forgot when I was putting the video together. I had started this video before you commented on my kick mic one, but I'm planning on trying out SPAN on the next so I'll have the cooler analyzer options. Thanks again for watching!

How you did the recording, all the mics were recording at the same time and the same distance from the snare, or not?
@BetterMixes
@BetterMixes 2 жыл бұрын
Nope, each mic was a separate take so we could have the mics in as close to the same position as possible.

Ya know, I totally thought I posted a tom video, but apparently, I didn't! I'll see if I still have the files from when I did the tom mic shootout, and if I don't, I'll try to get around to re-doing it at some point for a video!

What type of snare drum was this?

They're not all the same volume? But nice job!
@BetterMixes
@BetterMixes 4 жыл бұрын
I normalized each clip to the same peak volume, so is there's one particularly hard hit for one of the mics, that would drive the volume of the rest of that mic's hits down slightly, but the playing is pretty consistent, so it shouldn't be too far off. The other thing going on is just the transient response of the mic. For instance, the Josephson sounds by far the loudest, but that's because it's naturally more compressed than any of the other mics and rounds off the initial transient more. That being said, if you'd like to hear them normalized to RMS values, or just done by ear, you can download the files and do whatever you like with them! Thanks for watching!
@henrygentles1894
@henrygentles1894 4 жыл бұрын
@@BetterMixes Did you try rms normalisation? If one has an abnormal peak the overall volume will be skewed. Average rms might sound more equal?
@BetterMixes
@BetterMixes 4 жыл бұрын
@@henrygentles1894 I didn't (although I'll at least try it for my next shootout video!). The one thing that I like about peak normalization is that it makes the transient response of the mics really obvious (again comparing the Josephson to either mic around it, you can hear how compressed the Josephson is). But, of course, RMS normalization makes hearing the frequency response differences more obvious, so, in my opinion at least, both have their pros and cons! But like I said, you can always download the files to compare them even better!
@henrygentles1894
@henrygentles1894 4 жыл бұрын
@@BetterMixes No wrong, either way will not affect transient response. Transient response will be the exact same, the only thing that will change is average volume. The transient can not be altered.
@BetterMixes
@BetterMixes 4 жыл бұрын
@@henrygentles1894 I'm sorry, I must not have explained what I meant properly. I wasn't suggesting that normalizing differently would affect the transient response, I was saying that normalizing peak shows the difference in transient response better. For instance, the sE4400a seems to have a pretty fast transient response. It's got a much larger spike at the beginning of the hit. The Josephson is quite compressed by contrast and doesn't have that initial transient spike. That's why the Josephson sounds so much louder than the sE. When I was shooting out these mics, I thought that was pretty interesting, and normalizing peak values shows off that difference more. That being said, I've started making an overhead mic video, and on that one, I'm using RMS normalization.

At first i would learn to tune a snare! This ist the worst sounding snare i've ever heard. So its totally worst to check a Mic on it...

Ya know, when I first saw this comment, having not watched this video in a long time (and knowing that I recorded these drum examples like...8 years ago), I was expecting it to be a lot worse 😆 But once I listened back, I didn't think it was too bad. Based on the video you sent (also, weird that you linked to the part of the video that had all the drum mics in, not just the snare mic...) I'm guessing you just prefer the sound of a much higher, much more dampened snare (which makes sense since your profile says you play funk and fusion). I had this tuned more for a big beefy wide open kind of thing with no dampening. Definitely not what I would use for funk or fusion. Yeah, if I was doing this video today, I'd probably find a range where this particular snare had a little bit less of that lowest overtone, but if this is genuinely the worst snare you've ever heard, then you're a lucky dude 😆. But I think it's more likely that, like I said, you're into higher tunings, and rather than just a) looking for another video that might be more helpful to you or b) learning what you can from the video despite it not being your preferred sound, you decided it was best to insult someone who was just trying to be helpful by sharing a mic shootout he had done 🙃 And as far as your insult itself, I've actually drum-teched for a lot of big drummers including on a couple platinum records (luckily my shitty snare sounds didn't ruin the records 😉)
