What often gets forgotten is that the close snare mic is only part of the picture. When you add the overhead mics they will naturally bring in more top end of the snare. So a more muffled close snare mic will sound natural when the overheads are introduced. I have been loving a Beyer M69 on snare. It's hyper cardioid so it cuts out a lot of the metal work. Because of this sending the close snare to a reverb sounds uncluttered.

just one thing to add here, and why mic placement might differ in recording scenarios: the directivity/polar pattern of the mic is of big relevance, especially when the hihat is very close to the snare. you might decide to turn the mic facing more to the rim to turn the dead spot of the mic towards the hihat as a compromise to get less bleed from it.

I like the idea of the academy you are putting together. I’d also like to see more info/courses on ENGINEERING tones. You do that more than the others for sure, and that’s nice! Not sure why mixing and mastering get all the glory: capturing the tones at the source and getting the source right/engineering tones is where the magic is. On that note, even more so: getting great takes out of your clients: because that is truly what matters for all this other stuff to work: not nearly enough emphasis on that out there in KZfaq land.

very good advice, of course :) i found out through trial and error that i love some combination/blend of a close miced top with some close miced shell. once possible phase issues are sorted out i can get some good "best of all worlds" tones out of a snare i want to add that it's almost just as important to position the mic in such a way that it doesn't pick up/rejects what you DON'T want in the mic (hats, rides, toms). depends on the drum kit and the player and the song but i have worked with perfect snare recordings that were ruined by sporadic hits/sounds of some other piece of the kit.

@j.6359
@j.6359 2 жыл бұрын
Great! The last position seems like the sweet spot. For a single mic. If you know in advance that you'll be using a bottom mic, what considerations comes to mind when choosing the top mic position? How would this affect the decision making process? Should we start with our favorite top mic position and then find the bottom mic position that adds the qualities missing on the snr top? Or should we choose the top mic position keeping in mind what the bottom mic usually adds to the mix? ("The bottom mic will be adding brightness and wires, and has less hi hat bleed, so I better try to get more low end out of the top mic and...". This kind of thinking).
