John Hicks, so much feel and passion in his playing. Not well known enough, he was so talented.

Saw Hicks many times in NYC when I was younger at places like Bradley’s. One of my favorite pianists. Agree he is not well known enough. His playing was so fluid and achingly beautiful. Glad some of it was captured here.

You can tell that Ratzo Harris is a fan of Betty's. His body language is so open and receptive to her, he often chuckles to himself when she does something brilliant and you get the feeling that he is specifically playing in accompaniment to her. This was one of her best trio line-ups.

I saw Betty Carter perform several times in the mid-90s -- nearly 20 years after this performance -- and her voice did not change at all. If you told me that this was Carter at Blues Alley (Washington DC) 1995, I would totally believe you.

Listening to her sing was at first for me like watching a great artist painting modern art on a canvas at first you don't get it then you do I love her but I have to admit she had to grow on me because of her unusual style of singing she is not a conventional jazz diva and I guess thats part of her genius

Carmen Mc Rae once stated in an interview that she felt that Betty Carter was the only real jazz singer out there

I only saw her on tv the first time in an episode of the Cosby show but had no idea who she was untill years later, around the release of "It's Not About The Melody". So unfortunately never saw her live and find her under-represented online. The FB page is taken over by some odd african/christian Church. So sad.

I saw her perform in many different venues in Philly, but she was always best in small clubs. One night at Jewels on North Broad Street she came up and sang just to me…… goosebumps Anyone who only listens to her recordings miss half the experience. You have to watch her live …..thankfully we have these videos. You have to pay close attention to her gestures and interactions with the band. Never take your eye off her. Ten visual and the sound take you on a roller coaster of emotion

If jazz musicians were Jedi, Betty Carter would have the highest midi-chlorian count.

She really looks like she's having fun here. Especially the scat parts. All those young people in the audience! Seems like the audiences are mostly older now.
