Betty Carter evidently did not like the nickname ‘Bebop Betty’, but it was apt in describing her as a singer who truly used her voice as an improvising instrument. She was a trailblazer, not only as a woman in jazz and an improvising vocalist, but as one who took control of her career to the point of starting and recording exclusively for her own record label at a time when such a thing was an audacious move for any musician. Her unmistakable voice and style was like no other, clearly demonstrated in this video, and her legacy as a mentor lives on.
