23:00 It wasn't the first issue of the factory, it was the first factory.The "1st USSR Factory in Tula" (Первый оружейный завод СССР в Туле). Somehow he read "оружейный" as "сооружённый", but it is the wrong word in this case anyway (the phrase would look completely different). Unless Jamie meant Factory itself as the 1st issue ).

Eh...on firearms is a rare instance, on bigger weaponry is much more common. The damages to a tank gun or artillery piece barrel range from muzzle break damaged, to barrel splits, to flower barrels (same as banana peel), to a complete sawed-off barrel. Happened a lot in these years across the world, and there are a lot of historical photos showing the same thing made also by self destroying weapons before enemies could captured/reused them.

I always like their testing, this one was one of my fav episode On a serious note, banana/flower barrels are more common in big weaponry like artillery or tank gun barrels, due to recent global events and even in the past, tanks and SPGs/artillery pieces were showed with damaged barrels, some with them broken up as the banana peel. The contests was always the same, an obstruction was into the barrel (mostly earth/dirt from moving the piece/tank) and an explosive shell was fired (HEAT/HE rounds but also KE anti-armor rounds), result: peeled barrel (worst result: sawed-off barrel, sometimes with injuried crew, others without). It's possible, also in firearms, but a rare instance compared to the previous mentioned kind.

6:20 When dome correctly Welds are stronger than the metal they are welding
@AJD09FB

Presumably that applies to modern welds though? Would welds have been as reliable in the 1800's? Also, I believe Damascus barrels were produced by forge welding, which is inherently more prone to delamination.

I feel like they went the wrong way with the tbn slide. It's whole purpose is to be super easy to move, and it is... right up until the slide is dented/warped even slightly, at which point the friction increases massively. You can see this by comparing how well the slide moves at 14:50 to how it barely moves despite facing downwards and being handled at 17:15. Or alternatively listen to the slide at 44:50, it looks perfect but you can _hear_ it's slightly off, that's how tight the tolerances are. This warping/denting is probably happening before any form of pressure wave/shockwave reaches the slide internally - the explosion is right next to the slide afterall - so adding more explosives is never going to resolve that. So, I'd have gone with less explosives in the hope that the slide wouldn't be damaged. This'd also have the added benefit that the lip seal would be less likely to break from the force of the explosion pushing the trombonist back. The question, then, is whether there's a point that the explosion both reliably doesn't damage the slide and yet still has enough force to send it off... which probably isn't too likely tbf.

The problem is that the explosion has a much easier path out. The large opening from which the sounds usually comes, where the explosive muffler is located.

@TorianTammas
@TorianTammas Ай бұрын
Possible, The high temperatures during welding cause grain growth, which can result in coarser microstructures in the HAZ compared to the base metal. This change may lead to reduced mechanical strength and increased susceptibility to corrosion.

I was a huge fan of MythBusters when it came out but going as far as calling it a science documentary is probably not really fair on actual science.

Why the hell would a hammer explode?? Do all these people forget blacksmithing is a thing?
@haytguugle8656
@haytguugle8656 Жыл бұрын
The whole concept of their "hammer" test was completely wrong - every time. The one aspect of the hammer test that was clearly missed EVERY time is easy to see when the clip of Jamie, that the fans complained about, is quickly analyzed. It is not at all about two hammers smacking into each other. It's about using one hammer as a wedge or chisel, and the other to impart sudden impact energy. The target hammer is not floating in the air. It is pressed against the hard material being worked on. The impact of the swung hammer is delivering all of its energy into the second tool with nowhere for it to go. All one has to do is look at any / every chisel that has been worked. The second problem is the misinterpretation of the expression "explosion". Hammering a steel chisel always causes the head of the chisel to eventually "mushroom" with the edges splitting and curling back. It is these curls that can be sent flying possibly causing serious injury. It has happened. This is why skilled workers always grind off those curls to return the head to its safer condition. This too goes against their theory that they needed to make the hammers harder. The chisels are intentionally made a bit softer so they can be resharpened easier, and so that the curls can form slowly and be taken care of before they become a danger. So using one hammer to act as the chisel, and hitting it with another hammer is definitely not within the design of the tool. Hammers are designed to NOT deform. Chisels are designed to allow some of the impact energy to be dissipated to minimize the shock of the repeated impacts. So hammer against hammer is seriously not a good idea. I've seen guys get fired off the job for doing it.

But they said they aren't denying they can chip, but that isn't the myth, the myth is exploding.
@haytguugle8656
@haytguugle8656 Жыл бұрын
@@CroftyOriginal Of course the literal term "explode" means rapid chemical conversion of energy. But it very often gets used to mean situations where things come apart violently. Your suggestion makes it seem like anyone could be expecting two hammers to ignite into a catastrophic fireball of destruction. Please be assured that this is in no way a new discussion, and safety officers and shop stewards on construction sites and quarries have dealt with this very well known and understood safety issue. As I said, it is not unknown that people have received injuries from chips or chunks of steel flying off of 'mushroomed' chisels which are made softer than hammers. So the possibility of greater danger is very real when it is hammer vs. hammer instead of even the chisel in such situations.
@dgthe3
@dgthe3 11 ай бұрын
@@haytguugle8656 If I hear that a hammer 'exploded', I'm picturing dozens if not hundreds (or thousands) of fragments shooting off in all directions & the head itself ceases to exist as a recognizable thing. A single chip breaking off is nothing remotely close to that.

I hate how all these science shows use "ballistic gel" as a replacement for the human body... just because something is the same density doesn't mean it will react the same way... Skin will tighten same with muscles, etc. The body will physically react to the damage where a lifeless "body" made of gelatin doesn't, It's not even close to a representation of human flesh or innards. I get you can't shoot a person, but at least use a dead animal or something that's actually representative not gelatin. Anyone can go and get Jello too...

The show lasted a long time, I don't think it can be considered a failure in any sense Besides, if you can't be open with your business partner about how you feel, you shouldn't be in business together - and most importantly, Jamie generally didn't air things that he wasn't right about.
