Over the last three years, I've come to realize the Steelcase Gesture is one of my favorite Steelcase chairs. From it's high end look, to armrests that are so adjustable, I can't believe everyone wouldn't be able to find a comfortable position. So why can't I actually get completely comfortable?

The ultimate Steelcase chair would be one that looks attractive like the Gesture and has its arms, has all the adjustability of the Leap v2 and the comfort of the Amia.

This along with what devincampbell5007 said should be in the works (at least I hope) as I wasn't happy when I went to the showroom and sat in the Leap v2 nor the Gesture. I really loved when I sat in the Aeron the way it cradled my back (lumbar and thoracic) perfectly and seat seemed fine as well apart from when I sat right the way back I noticed my tailbone on the edge of the backing just touching the underframe of the mesh. I think that may cause issues longer (which I will go back and try) as after this I've tried all Steelcases and all Herman Millers (inc Embody and Gaming Embody) and just wasn't sold on any. I just don't seem to be able to get 100% comfortable and the Aeron was the ONLY chair I've ever sat in with an immediate wow factor (which it was the chair at the bottom of my list funny enough originally) My partner also sat in it and LOVED it (but refused to spend that kind of money on it, so bought an Ergo chair from Ikea) but for me (since I have more back pain as I've been in IT all my life) it was even more a game changer. Hopefully my third visit will prove my fears unfounded otherwise I'm back to square one again...... PS In the last 10 years I've been using the ErgoHuman V1 and that thing originally solved a lot of backpain (different sorts) that I had, but I think caused other types as it has a slight decline and that made me slouch unconsciously forward

@@devincampbell5007 Naw the tech and those parts are already there so shouldn't cost that much. Most of the money they try and recoup is in R&D and since you are literally just taking the parts from other chairs should be quite reasonable the price. Hopefully Steelseries look at this and is somehow getting this feedback instead of it being lost to these channels.

I wish I could Frankenstein a bunch of steelcase chair parts together. Every chair they make is generally ok, has a saving grace but also a downfall. I got a used 5yo Think in good condition (needed cleaning and replacing the wheels) for ~45usd so I can't really complain. But I do wish it went a bit lower (I'm short) and that the back had tilting force and lumber strength adjustability.

Man, if you guys started to sell Lamias w/ an adapted chair control, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. In my mind, the ideal Steelcase chair is the leap v2 back and frame, Gesture headrest/armrests, and the Amia seat pad. That Frankenstein would be a dream come true.

I actually found the backrest and the seat better on the Gesture than the Leap by a large margin. The sales lady also said to me most guys are similar to myself (with ladies being the opposite) but I haven't been able to try the Amia. Steel series should take this seriously into consideration though from all the feedback I've heard (hopefully it is going to them and not staying on these channels)

I've had it for a little over 5 years. Pre-covid I usually worked from my company's office which had Leaps. I’ve heard a view that back pain issues can be encouraged or made worse with arm rests. The thinking was that they can encourage the person to slouch laterally one way or another, rather than sitting straight up. Associated thoughts (for those with back issues) was to remove arm rests from chairs where possible. Is this a topic you could dig into?

Adore almost everything about the Gesture, except the seat just kills me too. I understand that firm is better, but after an hour I feel like I'm sitting on a rock. I'm totally with you on the aesthetics of the Gesture. I wanted to like it more than the Leap so badly because of how pretty it is but I just couldn't get over how good the tilt function is on the Leap where the seat moves forward slightly as the back reclines. The Gesture doesn't do that and it made enough of a difference for me to go with the Leap.

I bought one with headrest after watching your reviews. My IKEA Markus chair is 14 years old (I removed the arm rests about 5 years ago) and I started getting a few twinges in back/leg so thought it was time. It's great, only had it a few days but so far so good. I have a bad habit of leaning with too much of my weight on my elbow if the arms are too high so being able to keep them 1 notch above lowest point is pretty good so far. The arms only have about 4 height locked positions. The back has 4 lock positions, up right (Mr 90 Degrees :)), something like 100 degrees which luckily works for me, then something like 120 and 130. Being 6'4" and being used to the Markus it was the headrest which is the most important thing for me and thats good enough adjustments to get it right, it does take a while though, I think I have it now. Seat comfort wise yeah it needs more than it has so I'll be getting some extra foam cushion in the future, at the moment a folded towel is working ok. Bonkers money but divided by 10 years isn't so bad I guess.

I'm actually testing both the leap v2 and gesture right now. The gesture's headrest I feel is one of the best as it seems to be able to be in every direction. I also really like the armrests way more than that of the leap. However I seem to have some similar problems that you point out. Compared to the HM Aeron and the Leap V2, which has good support and curvature at my lumbar area, the Gesture feels like it has this really giant curve to it with very little lumbar support. It makes me feel like I am never sitting on it correctly no matter how hard I try and contributes to me shifting in my seat all the time. The seat cushion has 2 problems for me. I can never feel properly support while sitting on this chair because it feels like the seat is angled forward and constantly trying to eject me forward. My tailbone also starts to hurt like immediately and I find myself shifting around a lot just trying to find a position where that isn't the case. The only big problem I have with the Leap V2 is that the only way I can get a headrest outside of Steelcase seems to be hacking one up. I really wish they invested more in the Leap's headrest and had a good option to use since I do really like the Leap V2.

Is it normal for the lumbar support to slide downwards after some hours of usage and need reconfiguration? It usually happens for me when the lumbar support is under the curve of the back which generally acts as stop for the lumbar support both upwards or downwards (needs a little more pressure to move it through the curve).

Could we get a review for people that tuck a foot under or go completely cross legged. Ergonomic? No but it's the only way I sit and the only chair I've used for 10 years is the staples tempur-pedic tp9000. The pneumatic is not as good as it was and I want a new chair. It doesn't look like there's many options for me out there. I like the chairs that have a chair pan that moves out so I would feel less like I'm always on the edge. I would need the softest possible cushion as well.

I really wish you had a woman on board every once in a while to give reviews. You have more muscle and weight (generally speaking ... more muscle than me anyway) so you naturally have more muscle to use when leaning back or adjusting the chair. I have the same problem with tool reviews. A man's idea of 'light' is not always my idea of lightweight. Even if her choices and feedback does not differ, it would be good to know someone with my build (my muscle strength ... probably won't find a guy with as little muscle as I have) finds it easy to use.

I had it and had to send it back unfortunately. Something about the back rest tilt mechanism doesn't feel right, but what was much worse were the hard edges around the seat in the front and side. Why the hell would the seat go narrower towards the front instead of just staying straight. A great chair, killed for me due to unnecessary design choices to make it look nice, was a real bummer.

Apart from Steelcase chairs feeling a mediocre design all together, I can't justify those armrests either. But really, there are very limited usecases where such an armrest comes in handy, and the so called flexibility becomes a marketing B.S. imo. The lumbar on the Gesture is way too harsh, the seat padding is even worse, it has pressure points and makes it impossible to use it for hours. Overall it is a flawed design with features nobody would really use. I would preferably go with some Herman Miller in this price range...

Your comment is old but I have a Sayl, had a Leap, and tried the Gesture in a showroom. The Sayl does have a better pad than both of these imo. The Leap is too restrictive and the Gesture is just not supportive enough. The Sayl is simple and doesn't try to force your body in any position. It's firm enough to support you but not so firm that it hurts. The only downside I have with the Sayl is the backrest height, at 1.80m for me it's a bit short and the end corners poke into my back a bit. Not a deal breaker, just not an endgame chair.
