Recording of BHS Pennines Section Webinar from Wednesday 16th March 2022 given by Aidan Foley (Mott MacDonald). The meeting was titled 'Groundwater Hydrology - Where is all the water?' ahead of World Water Day 2022, the theme of which is 'Groundwater - making the invisible visible'.
Manifesting the invisible: an introduction to the groundwater hydrology of springs - Aidan Foley (Mott MacDonald)
Springs represent the culmination of many hydrological, geological, geomorphological and other environmental processes. They have been revered through the ages for their life-giving and healing properties, and may be categorized into various types, such as thermal springs, chalybeate (high mineral) springs, karst springs, submarine springs, and others. This talk gives a basic introduction to the groundwater hydrology of springs, covering a number of common geological settings in which springs manifest, and briefly examines how the hydrography and chemography of spring discharge may provide clues as to the origins of waters coalescing to form the spring. Some examples are drawn from the Pennines.
The meeting was hosted by Rob Burton and Victoria Coates from the BHS Pennines Section committee.
