Recording of BHS Pennines Webinar from Wednesday 6th April 2022 given by Gareth Farr (The Coal Authority), Dr Alison Monaghan (British Geological Survey).
Gareth Farr (Coal Authority) and Dr Alison Monaghan (British Geological Survey) will present two complementary talks that cover both the current research and innovation associated with mine water heat and the current state of play with respect to development and construction of heat networks using this technology. As significant urban areas are located above abandoned coalfields there is potential for mine water energy to support heating for homes and businesses, and in the future it is possible that abandoned mines could provide large scale energy storage. This technology could be an important part of the renewable energy mix supporting low carbon heating, improving energy security and supporting green jobs. Dr Alison Monaghan will talk in detail about the UK Geoenergy Observatory based in Glasgow, whilst Gareth Farr will discuss active mine water heat network projects that are in development.
The meeting was hosted by Rob Burton from the BHS Pennines committee.
