It really comes down to this: If two people can cherry pick from a book and come up with equally ample justifications to hurt people, or help them, then maybe that book should not be considered a reliable guide for humanity's morality. Could you imagine any other book garnering the kind of reverence that the Bible has, but at the same time being so contradictory? Imagine a science book that consistently claimed as fact two diametrically opposed assertions , like water boils at both 100°C and 0°C, or that smoking increases the risk of lung cancer and reduces it. No one would take that book seriously. We should treat the Bible the same way that we would treat any other book with such a level of inconsistency.

+Drake Santiago Well, as a science apologist I would argue like this: "...water boils at both 100°C and 0°C..." Out of context! You need to take the pressure into account, at one atmosphere the boiling point is 100°C, the lower the pressure, the lower the boiling point gets! (btw At 0°C and 611.73 Pascal it is solid liquid and vapor at the same time it's called the -holy trinity- triple point.) "smoking increases the risk of lung cancer and reduces it." Out of context! Smoking tobacco increases the risk, but smoking other herbs has shown to have a positive effect. I guess what I'm trying to say is, that it's hard to assess the validity of apologetic counter arguments, because they might actually have a point.

Thulyblu Not necessarily, when given the *out of context* argument and then followed by a counter-argument, the counter-argument must be a perfect argument. When you say smoking increases risk of getting lungcancer but smoking other stuff show positive signs, you did not show to what extend. Just because vegetables are good does not mean you can only eat vegetables everyday, too much of something good is bad. So when someone says you read something from the bible in the wrong context and give you a counter argument, you must check if their counter-argument account for all possible scenarios, if it does not, the counter-argument is flawed or incomplete which still means it is flawed.

If you comment on one of my videos, and I want to respond, but I can't because you have replies disabled: I will delete your comment immediately. Just so you know. You can't come along, take a dump on the comments section, and then run away and not have your bullshit argument handed back to you. That's why your comment was deleted: because by having replies disabled you are telling us a) that you're not interested in discussion, and b) your argument is so weak that you're not prepared to defend it and therefore it doesn't deserve to be seen by anyone.

I assume you're referring to all the great personal miracles out there.. Well, miracles are happenning without a sophisticated belief too and they're happenning within every religion equally likely. I wouldnt conclude from that, that a god did all that by showing he's there, having personal attention to each one of us. I would rather say they're just natural circumstances, which we don't understand enough yet. Much like an upside down rainbow or a sudden dragonfly in the middle of a city without a pond nearby. Rare but natural events and with a bit research not even rare, but rather short-lived ones and easy to overlook.

@agreer6483 Genuinely, how do you deal with the disturbing parts of the Bible, like the parts that condemn sinners to burn in hell for eternity? Personally, just that on its own proves that god is cruel rather than loving and caring, which also means that the bible is not inerrant. Could you imagine if you had kids and one of them was going through a rebellious faze because of some instability or trauma in their life and they told you in a fight that you aren't their true parent and they don't love you anymore? What do you think you would do? Would you condemn your child to hell to burn for all of eternity? Is there any crime that your child could commit that would cause you to even consider doing that? Anyone who can birth children knowing exactly which ones are doomed to be tortured for all of eternity (because of your own rules that you could change) and then proceeds to still create those children and follow through with damning them, and then spend an eternity listening their children's constant screams of pain and terror and their desperate pleas for mercy, all because they committed the crime of simply not believing that their creator existed (because of the lack of any concrete or reliable evidence) or cheating on their spouse, or stealing from a store, or being jealous of their peers is categorically the most cruel, psychopathic, and sadistic being that has ever existed and will ever exist.

As a former theist, I think that the ability to twist minds to embrace the idea of a god who does the inexcusable things that the god of the Bible tries entirely on social conditioning. The conditioning that takes place when you're raised with it and the conditioning when a new person is brought into the fold. Surrounded by love and acceptance (though as with a new dating partner you're shielded from the ugly underbellies often found as with most human organizations) you're more inclined to eventually accept those dark parts of the Bible for the rationalizations that are given as a part of the more consequential and immediate support of the tribe. It's something with deep evolutionary roots. Imagine how much stronger it would have been in years and centuries past! When there were virtually no alternatives to escape to.

Brilliant video, another great NSC scenario! I think the video encapsulates the problem theists have with morality being God-inspired... If that were the case, why don't we see scenarios like this much more often?! Why don't we have theists today presenting slavery as a badge of honour of their religious teachings instead of charity and loving thy neighbour as thyself etc? I mean both are ordered and justified in the bible, so who is deciding which one is the one we should hide and try to change, and which one we flash out to people on a regular basis? If it were truly something that is derived from divinity, scenarios like this would almost equal the number of scenarios that promote and are proud of the decent passages.

+The Masked Arab but could modern Christianity be used as a kind of "methadone" for Muslims? Could it be a "gateway drug" for atheism?

+Gloomshadow100 Jainism or Buddhism, maybe. Christianity has far too much baggage associated with it to do that reliably.

This is what happens on Muslim twitter lol. With the normal muslim if you quote 9/29 and 8/39 etc, he will say these war verses are taken out of context, they are only for “Back then”, they don’t mean what they say and we cant take them literally etc. But you go to Muslim Twitter and they say Alhamdulilah brother indeed these verses order war against all disbelievers lol. And they respond with the Context excuses when you quote the peaceful verses like 2:256 (no compulsion in religion)

I grew up in a home where we were very abused physically, my mom would call demons out of me when I had no clothes on and beat me all over with a stick for what felt like was 15 minutes. I know well meaning Christians who spank their kids almost daily because they really are scared of their children going to hell…. I’m crying writing this down…. It’s hard being a fundamentalist, and if you have children I don’t think you can be a true Christian fundamentalist and not abuse your children…
