Is there a reason some plural verbs end with -ουσιν while others with -ονται!? It'd be easier if the language had one consistent paradigm encompassing all verbs...

Yes, wouldn't that be nice! But unfortunately languages don't work like that, and especially Greek. There are many different verb forms and many different endings. I would recommend not worrying about them at this stage, understanding is the most important aspect. Once we have enough vocabulary, I will show some paradigms.

The -ουσιν verbs are active voice and the -ονται verbs are passive and middle voice. The endings are very consistent, as a matter of fact.

we actually read αι as ε and ει as ι except if it is writen like that άι and έι.We also real ευ and αυ as ev and av.
