In this DIY project video we are going to convert our bicycle into an electric one. We are going to use a car alternator that we have converted to a permanent magnet brushless motor that we have converted in previous project video.
Have a look at this project video as we are going to have lots of fun building this bicycle.

Correct on the battery placement. That's why when I bought my conversion kit for my bike with the hub motor, I bought a battery that I could mount in the middle of the bike to offset the 25lbs of the motor in the rear. Putting the heavy battery in the back would stress the frame to much when making sharper turns. When I make turns now it feels normal other than the extra weight on the bike but it's balanced well. I read that others noticed problems with to much weight in the rear.

I work with sspeedometers professionally. The car Speedo is fast, the GPS speedo of your phone is accurate, provided you have been travelling at a steady speed in a straight line for 30 seconds or more. Car Speedos are required by law to never read slow, so the manufacturers of cars typically make them read 7 to 10 percent fast, which gives a safety margin that allows for changes in brands of tyres and tyre wear. For future tests, trust your GPS speedometer on the phone. Just give it 30 seconds at a steady speed to settle out any GPS averaging requirements. 🙂
@ronlaverdiere
@ronlaverdiere 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbrownlee9497 RPM gauges are more accurate than speedometers. Historically, manufacturers have designed speedometers to show about 5% higher than people actually are driving. This is so they think they are going faster than they actually are, since everyone drives above the posted speed limits. This has changed with modern vehicles, since they are now tied in to GPS locators with navigation systems. Now they need to show true speeds.

when possibilities become probabilities, you are watching the right channels. this is a different type of moto-bicycle than I'm used to - most people build them like a motorcycle (Like the ones I ride)

That's super clever. Well done for putting an old alternator to very interesting use. To keep the controller cooler, consider adding an aerodynamic ducting to the heatsink to channel air over it as you ride, perhaps adding a quiet Noctua or Arctic Cooling fan to help with the air flow 👍😉

You should put a small water reservoir heatsink for a cpu on the speed controller and let the thermal differential cycle the small amount of fluid, and it would get rid of the air gap inside the controller and allow more heat transfer to the heatsink you added

Well done for your brilliant effort. May I suggest a couple of things. I would look at mounting the alternator by the pedal area and using a belt drive or similar to the rear wheel therefore giving you a more centralised mass. Following on from that, the battery pack would be much better slung under the main frame spar and would help with stability for your bike and reduce the speed wobbles experienced. Your efforts are nothing short of inspiring and you guys should be very proud of yourselves, just centralize and lower your overall mass for a much better handling bike. Front forks would also be worth changing to damped forks instead of rigid. Subbed, and sending you best wishes.

6:38 The protruding motor axle is way too close to the wheel spokes for my comfort. 12:10 66 km range = 41 mile range is not bad at all. 12:25 Going slower increases range. You'll find that in cars too. The faster you go, the more energy you are putting in and eating up that much more gas. Sure you'll get home faster but you will also eat up much more gas in the same distance. I wonder if the gas prices have a lot more people driving at the speed limit which is the perfect balance for gas consumption. 11:38 Averaging 50 kmh = 31 mph 12:22 30 kmh = 18 mph. That's about the same speed you'll get in your average stand or seated scooter.

Awesome 😎 i think the wobbling you mentioned is due to improper weight distribution. The alternator and the battery is on the rear wheel. Also, the rider sits closer to the rear than front. You should aim for a weight distribution of 50% for each wheel.

The problem is with the structural integrity of this bike. The power to body ratio does not match. This bike has a threshold speed limit above which it started to experience the wobble of death. Happens with the conventional motorbikes too.

I agree a tricycle would be better and centralize the alternator between the rear wheels and put a gear housing around the axle and alternator to protect them. The way it is now, one small rock or pebble like debris in the gear and the shows over Also consider a gyroscope steering aid for the front to stabilize the steering.
