A few years ago I converted a car alternator into a go kart motor. In this video I build an alternator powered bicycle. I originally tried controlling the motor with a sensorless controller but did not achieve the performance that I was hoping for. After installing hall effect sensors into the motor the results have far exceeded my expectations. The alternator is from a 1998 Ford F-150.

What I want to know is how many watt hours per mile. Also, a better drive system. The drive system is absolutely terrible. Aside from being terrible, you cannot do regen with that clutch. Regen would be the saving grace of the awful drive system of attaching a chainring to the wheel spokes. It's inefficient because he is constantly dumping 12v into the windings. It needs to have the windings only being powered when he is on the throttle.

When I was about 14 I'd devised that this should be possible.. had a go at building something that worked... I was trying to adjust the speed with the frequentie of the AC using a homemade tone generator.. never actually got it to work.. but that was in 1991.. I didn't have access to specialized controllers.. Soo I got it to turn, but as soon as I put a load on it kinda "stalled". My solution to the engine keeps turning problem was using a Solex frame with the alternator on the original engine mount.. so basically a manual clutch driving the front tire directly. But it never had the power, in all other aspects it worked. It turned the driven wheel (without the wheel touching the ground) I could break the connection between motor and driven wheel I could control the speed with a potmeter.. But I love to see that someone actually build a working model of a bicycle with an alternator for a motor.. Now I can finally show a few of my old friends that I wasn't crazy for trying .. thanks for that.

@@austiwawa I'll post this again here in case it may not have came to your attention. Just curious what you think about this: The centrifugal clutch idea could easily have worked properly, by either putting lighter springs in it, increasing the mass of the flyweights, or a combination of both, or else by getting a bigger clutch if that one was too small. I was also thinking you could have added a micro switch to the throttle, triggered by the initial first couple of mm of motion, connected to a relay supplying field power to the electromagnets. This would have eliminated the issue of the motor constantly spinning at a low speed. Great final product though. Keep up the good work!
@foxxyytofficial
@foxxyytofficial 3 жыл бұрын
@@smallblockchevy1022 removing the clutch was better, because the sensorless controller couldn't spin the alternator as fast as the other controller and with hall sensors it was even better and cutting the 12V field is a bad idea for the controller

If you ride at speeds higher than the bike is intended, reminder to check the axle bearings and grease. I made a minibike in the 60’s from a stingray bike and a 65ccClinton go cart racing motor. It would go 50 mph and after every run the bearing grease overheated and spun out of the bearing housing. It would not take long for the bearing balls to separate from the bearing. These videos are fun to watch but what is being overlooked is the fact that bicycles don't have the type of bearings that can stand this kind of speed and heat generated and will cause them to explode or seize and you will have pavement burns that will take you out of living for awhile. Plus you could never stop in time for other unseen hazards in front of you~!!

there are automotive alternator magnet kits for diy wind power generators .the last time I tested one for a customer was about 15 years ago so not sure if they are still available .that's the time when neodymium magnets were the hot thing to make projects, the ones I've seen came with a rotor cast from aluminum with magnets for 10 si gm alternators

on the good side: you can weaken the magnetic field for more speed by varying the rotor current or make it stronger for more torque. free gearbox basically. however on the bad side you wear the brushes and its less efficient since you have to waste energy to keep the magnetic field active. you could also use it for regenerative braking by feeding back the energy in the rotor instead of applying 12v when hitting the brakes.
@Hyratel
@Hyratel 3 жыл бұрын
You're not going to wear the brushes by any noticeable level, considering alternators can potentially run hundreds of thousands of miles with no maintenance. It's a slip-ring not a commutator, so there's no slots to wear down the carbon

thing is if you use unfiltered PWM for the field winding, the sensors (and controller) will have to deal with the electrical noise

It would be interesting to drive the alternator with a VESC, and write a custom app for it to control the rotor field voltage. Since the VESC internally knows the ERPM, it could easily take that and apply it on top of a curve you define which determines the field voltage. Have the VESC output the setpoint to a DC-DC adjustable Buck regulator, and it be able to dynamically and automatically adjust for optimal torque and RPM.. I might have to play around with this.. heh. Another neat feature of something like this, is since the VESC directly can read the throttle input, it could also just disable the DC-DC regulator at 0 throttle. Thus eliminating the parasitic current draw at 0 RPM.

@@Hyratel, diesel trains have brushed motors driving the wheels that contact the rails. These brushes have to be changed out regularly. I was informed of this by a (now deceased engineer). There are several sets of them. If you have a brushed motor, plan on having to change them out, there is no free ride.

Insted of wasting energy on continous powering the field coil you could use a 'Three-phase bridge rectifier' and power the field coil from the motor controller. I tryed it and works perfect. And you should change gear ratio to lower speed for the clutch to work better.
