Bicycle drum brake job done by an amateur

The old Juncker (a Gazelle brand) bicycle is back in the barn for some maintenance. This time I'm going to give the drum brakes a good service. And this will be the first time for me, that I'm working on bicycle drum brakes. I think the result is good and I actually learned a thing or two about servicing drum brakes. The bicycle seems to be running quieter and lighter. Time well spend and a perfect bake job for this amateur bike mechanic like me :) I also re-tensioned the spokes and trued up the wheels.

Do you think a degreaser or an alcohol wash can help clean out any dust or impurities and remove the noise without having to disassemble the tire and drum?

u should operate the brake lever while adjusting the play....

Does anyone know if there SHOULD be a washer underneath the brake mechanism? I have an Union probably from 1980's or something with Sachs drum brake. In my case there WAS a washer underneath but I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to be since I bought the bike used from someone who made some repairs that weren't necessarily very well done (e.g. bearings' balls were facing wrong side). When I put the drum brake mechanism together on the wheel without a washer it tends to cause friction on the axle and stop wheel from spinning freely. When I put the washer inside the drum brake mechanism and screw it tightly with the external nut, the wheel is spinning properly and the brake is working BUT the whole brake mechanism tightens kind of askew and not straight parallel to the wheel. I'm not sure if I can leave it this way. p.s. my brake didn't have it's own cone at all. There are only two cones on the bearings and the brake was mounted over the left bearing's cone and locknut in this way: thin washer, the brake mechanism, small spacer and normal nut.

I'm surprised a company actually called their product or brand Juncker. I know several that should have that moniker however.

Although pronounced the same way it does not have the same meaning in Dutch :) It's probably a surname from German origin.

Are these wooden shoes you are wearing? I thought wooden shoes were only sold to tourists. One thing I found helpful is to take tons of pictures when doing the disassembly. That way I can figure where the washers and spacers go when doing reassembly..especially if you start a project and can’t get back to finish it right away..

I cringe at all your videos. LOL. The clumsiest mechanic I've ever seen. But it looks like nobody else even tries. Doesn't anybody in Holland know how or care to clean and service anything?? WTF. All you had to do is throw the whole thing in solvent and work it around. That 80 sandpaper took off 2,000 miles of pad life probably. 180 is more like it. 240 on the liner. That squeak is nothing to worry about. Those spokes are way off tune also.

Clumsiest mechanic, that might be true. But I do have fun, and sometimes I get it right :)

I llove it that you not edit out the 'clumsiness'. They are the same sort of mistakes I tend to make and earned me a nickname referring to my clumsiness. But you learn most from these mistakes. 'Aha, of course!' moments, they are the best..
