The model in this video is Sturmey Archer XL-FDD Front Hub w/ 90mm Drum Brake & Dynamo 6V / 3.0W - 36 Hole. Out of any brake I operate (v brake, disc brake (mechanical and hydraulic) this drum brake requires the least maintenance.
This units is around 10 year old, I am not sure about milage, probably about 10,000 miles.
Last time I did this I wrote a blog post about it:

Brilliant hubs, so little maintenance required to keep them work. I bought one 6 years ago, have a little rust on one of the cartridge bearings so planning to replace it. Perfect for a commuting/cargo bike. Just get on and ride.

I have a 90 in front and a 70 in back, very good except for a little pitting on the drums after years of winter riding. I open them up every few years and dump out the shoe dust.

Yes they are pretty good. I was thinking about putting some on my mountain bike. I spend about £30 of disc brakes pads every year . . . How does the 70mm differ to 90mm in terms of power?

Thanks! I actually bought a whole new side plate with pads attached. But you can sometimes get the XL FD (non-dynohub version for less than the side plate - (£52 @ Taylor Wheels). Getting the actual shoes I found impossible. You could get them for older models of 90mm drum brakes, with a bolt on threaded fitting, but I could find a smooth bore offer, to suite star nu capture in this model. I found a side plate for £31. . . not sure about postage though: www.google.com/search?q=xl+fdd+shoes+brakes+90mm+sturmey+archer+&sa=X&biw=1280&bih=881&tbm=shop&sxsrf=ALiCzsZldL_Q83UgvAF3WEJi_S7EWeEODg%3A1658733767074&ei=x0TeYqf0A6OHhbIPoeuZwA0&ved=0ahUKEwjn89nnwJP5AhWjQ0EAHaF1BtgQ4dUDCAY&uact=5&oq=xl+fdd+shoes+brakes+90mm+sturmey+archer+&gs_lcp=Cgtwcm9kdWN0cy1jYxADMgUIIRCgATIFCCEQoAEyBQghEKABMgUIIRCgATIFCCEQoAE6BwghEAoQoAFKBAhBGAFQoAJY7S1gkC9oAXAAeACAAe0BiAHCE5IBBjEuMTQuMZgBAKABAcABAQ&sclient=products-cc

Thanks for the video. We have an old recumbent with this brake on the front wheels. Problem is, it appears there's maybe the wrong brake pad or something. Getting the pad part of the brake to insert into the drum is quite difficult, and once installed, there is no gap between the pads and the drum. Is there a way to create more gap?
@DorkyThorpy
@DorkyThorpy 3 жыл бұрын
From memory I think the pads on drum brakes are pushed apart (expand) against a spring. So when at rest, they should quite easily fit in to the drum housing. Could it be that you have the wrong pads for your drum? There are quite a few models of drum brake made by Sturmey Archer, and in different diameters too. For example I think this one comes in 90mm and 65mm variants. Mix up there perhaps. If you still have the old shoes, is their a company that will refurbish them? Being a bit of thug, I would probably just grind the pad down with an angle grinder ;-) but it depnds how much more room you need to make. If you have a video of the problem, share a link here and I will have a look.
@Vash002

I've recently had this problem. For me it was the tiny metal shoes that pinch the cam had somehow come loose of the brake arm. I had to poke a shoe back into place so the arm was properly seated into it.

Thanks for the video! I have Sturmey Archer XL-FD for a babboe bike (Cargo bike), and for both front wheels, the break remains "on", even after I removed the cables and everything. I will try cleaning it following this video. I am really confused as to why it happened to both at exactly the same, we tried to use it after about 15 days without use, removed the lock (the breaks stay on when locked), and the bike would not move. I removed the cables, remove the wheel, and the center bit seems to be stuck.
@DorkyThorpy
@DorkyThorpy 4 жыл бұрын
Thats sounds very strange that they both started locking up at the same time. Could it be that the brake lever was squeezed very forcefully which triggered the behaviour. The other option is that the pads have become fused to the drum, if the "parking brake" has been left on for a long period after getting wet. This can happen with car, hand brakes / parking brakes. When dissembling you may need to tap drum with a piece of wood or rubber hammer, to free things up.
@philippmenne8386
@philippmenne8386 2 жыл бұрын
I had the exact problem. We had the bike outside over night at well below 0 degrees with the fixing break on. The older babboe big bikes have one cable coming from the handle, splitting up into two cables in some kind of Y Adapter for the two front breaks. I am sure that due to the temperature that Y Adapter got damaged, so that both breaks where activated all the time. Gave it to the bike repair shop and they fixed it somehow. Pro tip: Don't leave the fixing break on if you expect temperatures well below 0 degrees :-).

This is really helpful. Have you tried the 70mm? Is it just not enough?
@DorkyThorpy
@DorkyThorpy 4 жыл бұрын
No I haven't tried to 70mm. I am using this with a v-brake lever. It provides plenty of braking force. If I used a proper calliper brake level, which generates more force, it would be even better. I would probably always go for a 90m, you may save a bit of weight with a 70mm, but I would rather have the extra power, and one would also imagine it would last longer (having to do the same work per unit area of pad / drum). If you choose a 70mm, use a calliper brake level, to get the most out of it perhaps (?)

@@DorkyThorpy Yeh I'll go with the 90mm. I aint gonna get any lighter in the next few years ; ) I'm thinking of going IGH at the back as well. Would like to have drum brakes on the rear as well but the Sturmey 3 gear hubs don't have the range I need, and 8 gear is overkill. Thinking about the nexus 7 and might try a rollerbrake (!). What are you using on the rear? Just trying to get together a bullet proof commuter and child carrier. Low low maintenance please.

@@michaelodonovan1908 LOL. Yep same here re. weight. I have an alfine 11 and hydraulic disc brake on the back. I am still not overly convinced a hub gear is less work (maintenance wise), than a cassette. So I might be tempted by the drum brake / cassette offering. www.sturmey-archer.com/en/products/detail/x-rdc You can get wide range cassette now in 7, 8, 9, 10 speeds. I haven't tried the sturmey archer IGHs but there 4 or 5 speed offering look quite good. If you have a range of approx 400% you should be OK. Here my alfine: dorkythorpy.blogspot.com/2017/04/shimano-alfine-11-hub-gear-review.html Nexus with a roller brake, that sound a great idea. You should check out taylor wheels for a whole wheelset, very good value, if I was starting from scratch, I would start here: www.taylor-wheels.com/bike-wheels/26-inch-bike-wheel/26-inch-wheelsets/26inch-bike-wheel-set-shimano-hub-dynamo-nexus-inter-8-rollerbrake

Do you live in a hilly area? I've read that rollerbrakes have a tendency to overheat & even fail when going down hill, have you experienced any brake fade? This may account for you having to replace the grease & the cracking on the inside of the drum.
@DorkyThorpy
@DorkyThorpy 2 жыл бұрын
I live in very hilly devon. Edge of Exmoor. 50% of rides are spent in lowest gear, or brakes on. The brake has always worked very well. Probably better than the rear disc brake. There are no cracks, the lines are pitting (or surface oxidation (rust). The grease issue though is a mystery. . . . if this was a bad piece of kit, you have my word, I would say so.

@@DorkyThorpy Thanking you for your prompt response. The reason I ask was that I was considering buying a three year old Batavus omafiets fitted with Shimano Nexus rollerbrakes but have since read that they require more servicing than I had anticipated. As you are no doubt aware removing the rear wheel on a Dutch bicycle is not straight forward & something you wouldn't want to do too often. Have you had any experience of Nexus rollerbrakes overheating or failure during decent of hills. Other than the rollerbrake concern, the bicycle is in mint condition & has a comfortable, ride without any rattles.

@@alungibbon9146 I have often looked at the roller brakes (you can get some good wheelsets from "Taylor Wheels") under the impression they are low maintenance. But no. I have never tried them apart from when riding boris bikes around london, and that is pretty flat. There are cooling fins on some models, which are the ones I would opt for, this indicates to me that they are designed for intensive use.

"Not as good as a disc brake"!!! Not as powerful maybe but they are consistent in all weather conditions, last a long time 50,000+ miles & are practically maintenance free. P.S. You might want to deglaze your brake shoes, they look a bit shiny. The patterns inside are cause by rust. HTH

@@DorkyThorpy £50!! Ouch! You can buy the brake shoes separately for around £30 for the 90mm and they come with the retaining clips. But I understand buying a new hub as I picked up a new 70mm X-RDC 8,9,10 speed cassette rear hub for £45 last week on ebay. When they used asbestos in the lining (the ones painted green) we used to boil them in vinegar to remove oils/contaminants. Doesn't work on the new stuff though. I wonder how much Ferrodo or Mintex charge to reline them? I'll have to contact them and find out.

@@nigelnightmare4160 The 90mm shoes I saw advertised on line, do not look quite right. (www.sjscycles.co.uk/hub-spares/sturmey-archer-brake-shoe-set-90-mm-hsb282/) as they have a threaded upper fixing, and the one on mine is a star washer. They are also £35, with postage, which is v. close to £50 (inc postage) for plate assembly. My dad talked about boiling them to get oil out . . . old school hack! Also GT85 has teflon, so probs even worse to try and clean off. :-( That is good intel on those companies that re-line, thanks.

Great hub, lousy video. Mine was bought in 2012 and has 24,000+ miles on a custom tour bike. 8,100 miles on 2 tours with a Rohloff14, the bike at 120 lbs. As good as new still, with only a RS bearing change at 17,000 miles. It won't lock the wheel, but it still is able to stop me all by itself. My fork couldn't handle it on my first tour in Vietnam and China. It snapped near the top 3 times. LOL. Mine also let some soupy mud seep inside a couple times and rusted the corner. I have V Dyad rims and 2.3/ 2.0 spokes, awesome. I had a crap caliper on the rear for 13,000 miles. Now has a perfect TRP Spyre disc caliper that stops on a dime. It has been with a SA RD5w about 8,000 miles. It absolutely was the fastest driver of my bikes. Darn shifting went wonky. The video would have been a whole lot better if you started with demonstrating it on the bike. Then taking it apart in sequence and showing how to align the brake arm to the plugin before taking it apart. It is ridiculously easy, I know. Riding on muddy farm roads sucks. Carry on riding...

Thank you for your reply. I am afraid after 10 years of making videos KZfaq has left me behind! I am still learning how to edit. I sound like we have arrived at same equipment choice, for same use ( muddy rural riding) and I have to say the Sturmey Archer drum brakes are ideal for that. I have often looked at there 70mm rear drum brake which takes a 9 speed cassette, but I like hub gears. . . . and I am not sure about SA reliability (for 8, 9 10 speed hub gears) .
