Senator Joe Biden's selection as Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama's vice presidential running mate brings solid foreign policy and other Senate experience to the ticket.
Experts say the Delaware senator's working class roots will help Obama among crucial Democratic Party voting blocs. VOA's Jeffrey Young has this profile of the Delaware senator.

The strategy of picking Vice Presidents is fascinating. Obama chose Biden for his ability to bring in moderate democrats, older democrats, and right of center independents and (not mentioned in this) obviously white voters. You can see that in Bidens own choice for Harris. Biden had white baby boomers and older black voters and on his side. He struggled with younger voters in general including younger black voters and Latinos because of Sanders’ appeal and I think the Tara Reid scandal hurt his appeal to women. Id imagine that Biden chose Harris for her background as she’d be a safe bet to appeal to voter demographics he struggled with and also that she’s been an extremely high profile lawmaker in the Democrats fight against the Trump White House. Personally I don’t think Harris was a smart choice for Biden since although Harris is young, her career as a criminal prosecutor was kryptonite to progressives and her disastrous student loan forgiveness proposal was skewered. She was also eviscerated by Tulsi Gabbard whom progressives favored but never had the name recognition that Sanders and Warren has. I think though it is the best decision a presidential candidate has made since Biden himself was selected by Obama. Paul Ryan wasn’t too different to Mitt Romney and I think Trump and Clinton both chose poor running mates in 2016. Personally I think Biden should have chosen Gabbard as a running mate. She’s a young lawmaker, a woman color, a progressive, and a near outsider to the Democratic establishment. Not only that, she is also active duty military and presented a strong foreign policy proposal, something that Biden has always been weak on. She did however seem to burn bridges with the DNC and her ‘present’ vote on Trump’s impeachment may have hurt her, but I think most people knew that’d go nowhere.

Eh, Tara Reade has now defected to Russia. LMAO. The idea that her accusation, all of which has now largely been debunked (and her decade + history of horrible lying and even con jobs has come out). I totally think Biden is from that old timey generation where those guys were insanely way too touchy and creepy with women, but Tara Reade was literally so unreliable that it honestly had absolutely no effect on any voters. I’d be willing to bet most voters didn’t even hear about it. In hindsight, it was a pretty weak propaganda campaign. And her choice to defect to Russia, especially after we now know she wrote a lot of pro-Putin love stories and weird propaganda, almost schizophrenic love letters, was weird to say the least.

The Gabbard proposal didn't age well. Anyways, Obama also picked Biden because Obama, as a very brief Senator, did not have a lot of legislative experience, which Biden had in spades. I think it makes sense for a Governor or someone who wasn't in Congress for long to pick a veteran of Congress as their running mate. It's what JFK did with LBJ, and LBJ delivered huge victories in domestic policy. It's a shame neither Obama or Biden could deliver massive domestic victories. They delivered decent ones, but not massive ones.
