I’ve watched enough episodes of May Day on tv to understand why this guy is not qualified! Oh this is truly scary. In the early days, in meetings, if asked 'Is this project on budget?' His response was 'I'll pass that over to James, my finance and budget manager on this project.' and James would answer. If it was 'Is the parts supply fitting the engineering timetable? ' His response was 'My Head of Engineering on this project, Norman, can take that question.' And Norman would give them the full answer. My point is that all new managers have a good deal of On The Job training, but it's the Management skills they want. After a short while, he knew the answers. That said, his aviation knowledge was perfect. He is now a Director of the company.

Funny enough there are some problems in the LBA, pertaining to leadership issues, so maybe it would have been better to have someone who maybe ran an airport for a few years would be a better choice. Then again we don't generally do this kind of dog and pony show that you murricans seem so fond of. Public office at that level should not be a popularity contest. So it's sort of weird to watch this kind of thing in murrica. The hard requirements for the job in Germany are to be a career civil servant of a particular paygrade, though that has very little to do with what you as a murrican would expect from those words. That's a question you'd maybe find in a private pilot license exam. I'm shocked he didn't do an impromptu pop quiz on ICAO guidelines for balloons and other lighter than air aircraft. Many years ago my dad told me about the city manager of the town we lived in. He said this guy would ride around town checking on the progress the employees on the job sites. If a crew was short handed, the manager would get out of his car, roll up his sleeves and help. He was so knowledgeable, he could help out in any department and often did. I know city managers don’t do that anymore. BUT, with any type of leader, they should be well aware of how things are to get done. And the right way at that. Just throwing in my 2 cents.

You mean meaningless questions with no bearing on the qualifications needed for the position that are impossible to answer in total by any one indidivudal without preparation? Because that's what those were. It's not required for the administrator of the FAA to be a pilot. The nominee openly said he wasn't a pilot. About half the questions were exclusively relevant for pilots. Hobby pilots at that, since no ATPL holder flying commercial would ever even have to consider airspace compatibility like that. That's something done by dispatch in flightplanning, although for commercial aviation in 99% of cases the aircraft in question are mandated to carry ADSB transponders and other safety critical equipment in order to carry passengers. And most funny of all: The FAA does not even employ pilots. That means the knowledge asked is not even technically actual institutional knowledge. The FAA doesn't even directly train pilots. It just certifies them. So, do tell how knowing stuff about jobs that aren't even existing within the FAA is relevant for the head of it?

While you are correct that the FAA Administrator position doesn’t require pilot experience, as an aviation professional I would much prefer if the agency responsible for regulating the work I do be lead by someone with actual aviation experience rather than another bureaucrat.
