We're hunting for cool antiques and vintage to take with us as we head west for next weekend's ‪@RoseCityVintageMarket‬ show in Portland, Oregon! Not a lot is open on Sunday as we drive across the Great Plains, but a chance spot of a Craigslist ad takes us to a town way off the beaten path that's having a flea market! Will there be bargains worth buying to take to our Northwest collectors?
In the tiny old downtown of Lyons, Nebraska, we happen on a classic car show/bike show/tractor show, with a hardworking (and loud) band laboring before a smattering of people. After goofing on all the cool old cars (including a carbon copy of my dad's 1967 Ford truck), we stumble across a group of perhaps half-a-dozen flea market dealers...and a few really good vintage surprises! Advertising signs and displays, a mink muff, a cool bottle opener and some other fun pieces jump out at us, and we say yes before I can contemplate how I'm going to fit it in my already full van.
They refer us to the "other half" of the flea market, a group of about a dozen vendors (including a small auction) in and around an abandoned Phillips 66 station. They won't let the old 66 sign go, so will I find anything worth taking west? A nice offer from one of the sellers at the last minute provides me with something unexpected, something I might need with the change in the weather. Bundled back in the van, I get to reflect on another fun and fruitful stop in an obscure Nebraska town! Now it's on to Portland for my show...1700 miles to go...
