I remember helping my Dad build a garage and workshop in the early 1960's (I was 14) - one long side ( about 40ft) was brick built (the other three sides timber and T&G western red cedar) I learnt some very handy bricklaying skills which came in very handy when I was married. My Uncle Ron was a professional bricklayer (he helped) and it was amazing to watch him slap the courses down at the speed of light! Those were the days…..

I used one of those bases for my shed 2 years ago. Super easy to install and has been perfect. Much easier than slabs or concrete, cheaper and can be reused somewhere else in the future. Looking forward to the next one Matt!

Good job Matt. I was a landscape gardener many moons ago and if you lay those turfs grass side down and make a heap in a couple of years they will break down and produce really excellent seed compost!

I used those plastic grids for my shed too. Although I already had an existing concrete base, I wanted to lift it up off it to help stop any damp. They worked out great, and filling them with shingles gives a nice neat look too in my opinion

I know its a bit late now but Gosforth Handyman has a vid on turf lifting. Used the grids for a couple of shed bases. Its a manageable way of doing bases single-handed and avoids the need to mix loads of concrete or lift heavy utility slabs.

A very interesting introduction to the build and an interesting way of laying the foundation. Can you please tell us: "how flat and level is the base?" On the video it does not look that flat, somewhat undulating... Also, "How is the underside of the OSB floor protected from moisture?" I am looking forward to the rest of the build.

I like the concept of that base, never seen that before. Thanks Not sure if you did this or not but laying a "BURIED CABLE" warning tape in the trench would have been good practice and might be required by UK standards.

Hi sir did you level the plastic base by lifting it to allow the gravel to fall underneath as you go round with a sprite level . Or did you rely on the sub frame by using wedges to get it perfectly level ? . Best wishes and kind regards 😀👍👍👍

I recently laid a (much smaller) base of the same type - did you have problems levelling it off? we found when we started filling with pea gravel then the plastic grid started shifting - eventually the gravel seemed to level out but it was a couple more bags than anticipated!

Matt be honest you only had a shave because your mum gave you an ear bashing about looking scruffy didn't she? As for the summer house doesn't your mum want to use it all year round? If so it would have been better to insulate the floor overwise she's definitely going to find it cold to be in. It's great to see that you're doing something for your mum as I was brought up with the same great attitude, I was brought up in the day's when the most important person in your life is your mum as she is the one person that basically you owe your life too and as such should alway's be willing to help out in anyway shape or form possible. I have four adult children who my wife and I brought up in very much the same mindset but unfortunately if you ask the younger generation for anything nowadays they are alway's way too busy to help you, unless of course it's the girlfriends family that's asking them!. Anyhow well done and hats off to you for taking the time and making the effort to look out for your mum by building her the summerhouse she wants and for getting a shave for her 👏 👍 😉. As always buddy 💯% 👍.

Hi, I’m just about to start a similar project. I noticed there isn’t a gap between the base and floor. Is it not necessary to have a gap for airflow?

This is excellent. Ive been looking at those grids for my own workshop. I have a quick Q: do you think theres any risk of damp (or lack of ventilation) under the joists if theres insulation down under the OSB? I note you havnt got any insulation in this build...
