Yep, just startet phase 2 on the Smart Hayabusa and I want to reduce her weight. So I built myself a HUGE THERMOFORMING MACHINE, also called vacuum forming machine to reproduce parts from the car but lighter.....and a lot cheaper!! Here is the complete built of that new tool for my shop!

While an amateur at vacforming, a few things I learned during my research was 1) The plastic cools quickly. Meaning after you take it off the heat you want it molding as fast as possible. 2) Have the vacuums on before you transfer the plastic. That way the second they hit the bottom they are pulling (as you help pull it down over your molds)

I suspect one of the issues you're running into is the time between the heat and the vacuum. Most machines I've seen have these integrated so the transition is much faster. Of course, being in Hoth-like temperatures can't help. Great content!
@VinyB57
@VinyB57 2 жыл бұрын
Yeaahhh...the cold must not have help me 🤦‍♂️ Of curse, hotter is better, so the longer the gap is between the heat and the vacuum will have an impact. For now, I put all my trust in the fact that I was forming thicker sheest that I was intending to use...hopefully, I ll have better results with 1/8" sheets, we will see that in roughly 2 weeks...😅

I can't wait to see car body parts made.. I do have a suggestion. Rather than 2 vacuum cleaners, how about a vacuum pump that sucks out all the air it can from a large steel tank. Then when the plastic is plyable, pop open a valve that will quickly draw the plastic down around your parts. You may need to build a smaller volume vacuum plate though... The smaller volume the better, I'd think!
@VinyB57
@VinyB57 2 жыл бұрын
My plan was, first test with the vacuum, if it doesn't work, add a valve, use the vacuum at first to remove a max of air, then close the valve and use the vacuum from the tank. Thanks for you comment Steve...we'll see how the machine will work with 1/8'' ABS
@SteveP-vm1uc
@SteveP-vm1uc 2 жыл бұрын
@@VinyB57 I understand that, but after watching more videos on this, I think the best way is a large volume tank to vacuum down and once you drop the plastic, pop open a valve that will suck all the air out rapidly. I think this because it happens rapidly, so it doesn't give the plastic any time to cool down at all. So tighter corners and better detail.. My thoughts for tanks are old compressor tanks or water heaters. Or many of them combined with large tubing between them and a large valve for a huge extremely fast draw. Even old propane tanks. Some places around Florida still sell stuff like this in scrap yards. not many anymore though! :(
@VinyB57
@VinyB57 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I completely understand your point, I'll keep that option in back up for now, just want to play a bit more with all the parameters; temperature, vacuum, material thickness before moving into a more complex and expensive solution.

Propane wasn't freezing it's natural liquid state is 44° f below zero. Mostly it's just too cold to vaporize you're pushing its limits at say -20 f. And the trouble usually is not in the bottle ( unless it's small) but the line temperature is too cold for the fuel to stay vaporized. The other cold spot is the regulator which sometimes can be cured with warm water. Of course you bypassed the regulator.👍 I have a trophy la truck with a ABS body. And it is .060 it's adult size but the old lady wants to ride and it's too small. Plus I'm a goof and want to go bigger engine. That's when I started looking hard at one of my 76 Toyota Hilux. It's just that much bigger. Only adding about 20 lb more. If it had the type body as on the trophy Kart. Which brought me here. You don't suppose I can build a big one and just vacuum form the whole truck. Lol really all I have to form is the fenders , Hood, Doors, and windshield. the roof and bed can be done with the heat gun. So what you built should work nicely. Thank you much. Isn't -22 c like -8 f? At my age I'm not sure I could acclimate. 🤠🐂🏞️

Great project, fun to watch. The multiple vac's may have been overkill, as your strongest one will overpower the others and make them useless, but others may have pointed that out. Though it does increase the initial clearing of air I suppose. Just doesn't increase the final vacuum. :)

I remember watching someone say forming windows needs to be done in a moisture free oven. That is the case for Perspex and Lexan. Otherwise you get crazing (frosted effect) in the windows. Burning gas creates a lot of moisture.

the one that i used to use at work was kinda like this but it used to have a built in slide which blocked off the vacuum to the part that isn't being used. i think the main issue that yours has is sealing and not enough suction to pull the molten plastic down

mine's got a couple of problems! 😅 Gonma fix them slowly, hope that with 1/8 I'll have better results! The other videos I watched, people was, at the max, forming 1/16"..it s hard to compare their results with my 1/4 thick test. Good idea for the slide, do you recall which thickness you were forming?
@DatBoiOrly
@DatBoiOrly 2 жыл бұрын
@@VinyB57 It was 1/4 inch thick but could do up to 1/16ths thick and if you want some ideas to match the machine i used i'll happily fill you in: -it had the heater above the plastic which were on rollers and you slid them back and forward till the sheet was soft -the vacuum bed had block offs built into it which slid in since we only used certain sizes of forming the plates were a solid acrylic -the entire bed raised and lowered on its own basically doing the 90% of the shaping and leaving the 10% of the shaping to the vacuum, which from maintenance works by a scissor lift and is lifted and lowered by a motor and switch hopefully this helps you on your quest for a forming machine
