Me, too. I can't wear curly hair, or ruffles, or anything overtly cute and girly. My mom dressed me like that when I was a kid because she wanted Shirley Temple. Unfortunately what she got was Tilda Swinton. As a matter of fact, Tilda Swinton looked more Yin as a child than I did.

Texture would maybe be an interesting topic to cover for a future video? YES YES YES PLEASE! I'm TR and I really struggle with picking the right fabrics. I look great in suede (or even shiny leather shoes and bags) and anything silk generally looks great or soft materials if they're woven but I have the hardest time making standard T-Shirt material work on me. It usually just doesn't sit right... Or maybe I'm going for the wrong shapes, who knows!

I agree. I always thought I ended up looking like a potato in a sack. I lived in asia where style tends towards loose but without waist emphasis and it drove me mad because it never worked for me. As a side note. I would love for her to do a new series delving into the specifics of how to do specific styles for each body type. For example, goth, boho, elegant, punk, and so on specifically for each body type. I think many people would love specific advice. Personally as a TR it was very challenging to figure out how to do casual looks without it looking crap because it was too simple. It feels like you always need accessories to save simple outfits.

I'm also a TR, and I gained weight during the Pandemic. My mother in law gave me a long turtle neck poncho, with embroidered flowers, which is nice, thinking it would help to hide my belly or something, but I just look so heavy... 20 kilos heavier.
@linibellini
@linibellini 2 жыл бұрын
Fully agree! My face has a lot of sharp lines and just judging by that and with the sharper shoulders I would look awesome in dramatic clothes. And I so wish I did! But every time I put on a longer or plain top I look so weirdly shaped. My curves just poke through the fabric as weird surprises that make no sense. Or I just look like 10 years older, 10 kilos heavier! I got some fun belts that should look tacky or over the top on most people (green alligator print, full metal gold and silver belt) and surprisingly they often save my outfits! Even a plain dress that has no details and no waist emphasis can become wearable with a belt like that wrapped around my waist. Same goes for handbags. I like cleaner lines but I always make sure to go for small bags with either a golden chain, embellishment or tassel detail. My boyfriend usually finds my bag choices too much / tacky looking but once I put them on it looks classy and like just the right amount of detail (or sometimes even still understated). So funny how that works!

Being both Romantic and goth is hard, hah, but I almost figured it out. I just make my makeup very soft, like, glossy gradient black lips with some purple tint instead of full-glam black matte lips. My eyeliner is curved, I don't contour my face (maybe some soft lines on sides of my face to make it look slimmer, but no cheek contour or harsh lines!). For outfits I choose witchy-like clothing, long skirts with soft layers, corsets, loose shirt with long puffy sleeves etc. I know I don't look "angry and dangerous" like I'd want to, but I cannot change my whole body, I have to work with it.

As a theatrical romantic (and I guess this would go for all romantics) waist emphasis is EVERYTHING! usually we have full chest and wide hips, so without our waist emphasis we just look like boxes 😅😅 but that can be a statement in itself and it is good to make informed decisions ❤️ Also, does anyone have a fashion suggestion for those days we are bloated and the waist emphasis unfortunately emphasises also the belly? I just wear loose shirts on those days, but that makes me feel not put together and you know how it is on thisr few days if the month, I would like to feel more confident and elegant. Thank you ❤️

I am R and have a fairly small bust but wide hips. I still really need that waist emphasis though to not look like a box. There's this meme - 'Is it fashion or is she just thin?' and I think that often fits. If you're a celebrity, possibly a model and maybe have modeled in the past and also look like a clothing hanger you can wear a lot of things with *intent* and confidence and posture and it will look convincingly like fashion. I feel like often we just assume that these people know what they're doing and therefore it must be fashion. (Not always of course, but growing up reading magazines it often seemed that way)

I really struggle to apply the kibbie principles for my shape to casual wear. Could you do a video on casual, everyday outfits for romantic and theatrical romantics? @il5702

As a TR myself, I often wear this casual combo you're describing under the following conditions: the jeans are actually thin and stretchy jeggins, they accentuate the curves, nothing bulky, super high waist, super narrow at the ankles + the top is simple yet it has at least a few of those textbook TR elements such as a delicate metallic thread in the fabric, or spaghetti straps / delicate sleeves with shoulder cut-outs rather than typical t-shirt sleeves that are just way too bulky for us. How bout that? ;)
@linibellini
@linibellini 2 жыл бұрын
I'm a TR too and my standard jeans and t-shirt look is a pair of black skinny jeans or cropped (!) mom jeans with either heels or flat sandals, paired with a silky strappy top slightly tucked in at the front. Or thin linen fabric T-shirts work great too. With those I get some that have rolled up sleeves and aren't too wide or long. The shoulders must sit well. For summer I love wearing an A -line skirt that emphasises the waist with a blouse or shirt tucked in. I have these skirts that are of a stiffer, crisp but thin cotton with some gathering around the waist and a loosely tied belt of the same material and I love pairing that with a softer, more relaxed fabric for the top. Another summer favourite are high waist, wide leg cropped pants made from thin material with a top or shirt tucked in and a detailed / glamorous looking waist belt! I always make sure to show my ankles, collar bone and wrists. Seems just as important as showing the waist to me!

Thank you! Before I found this channel I had no idea how to dress. I just tried a whole bunch of things, but I noticed that some things looked better on me than others. High waisted shorts, high necklines and I noticed that I looked weird in the dresses that I loved so much, sheath dresses. I guess I know now that it’s because the shape is too straight. It’s great to be able to put a name on what my body is and what suits my type.

Hi Aly for me this is the very best of your videos. Thank you so much. I'm a classic and I find there are a lot of pieces and styles that don't work well for me, but sometimes I just love them like long puffer coats, while a stay away from too long or too short skirts, too intense or too soft colours.

Love your videos Aly! Can you make a video of a soft classic style icon please? I am a sc and I struggle finding my own style and making it interesting. All sc suggestions are very average and basic, and now that I see that I don't feel good wearing anything with patterns, colorful and oversize stuff. It would be very helpful to see an extraordinary approach.

I learned I'm a sc thanks to you a few years ago and I couldn't agree more. We sc can break some rules but too much is really frumpy on us. Sometimes it can be annoying but I love how we can look "chic" with little effort. I was visiting some relatives yesterday and they were like wow you look good even though I was just wearing a simple tanktop in my color season, small earrings and my hair were in a updo.

Hey Aly, thank you so much for your videos about the body types, they are so helpful! Found out, that I'm a SC. Since I already have a lot of colorful detailed tattoos (that I love) I wondered if there is a way to make tattoos work with every body type? Or does it change the body type? A lot of people have stuff that they like (f.e. a certain haircolor/hairstyle etc.) that just doesn't fit their type. So is there a way to incorporate such things into your style so it works with your body type? A lot of people would probably benefit from a video about that topic!

I'm so glad to see the beautiful January Jones used as an expample. Her styling as the classic Betty Draper suited her to a T. Her personal style is far more flamboyant, which might make her happy and satisfied, but in terms of the Kibbe theory, clashes a lot. Great video as always!

Aly, I love your work and it's your experience that helped me create my own style (I'm so happy about it!), so I humbly ask you to include more black women in your content. I feel this will help many of us, it is very difficult to find any content that is for something simpler and cleaner, but yet composed. even the ones with the "classic, natural, chic" theme are heavy and forced, you know? if anyone can do this, it's you! please, I ask you to think carefully about my request. xoxo from brazil.

As a SD, the "feeling ungroomed" in baggy/oversize outfit hits right to the point! In the summer, I love my baggy harem pants, but I need to pair them with a fit t-shirt. When I pull on my boyfriend's shirt on top of that, I look and feel like a homeless person.

Yes!! Would love if she made a video like that. As a soft natural, I notice how my shoulders look extra strong in some simple clothes and it can be kinda annoying if that's not the vibe I'm going for. I think if you're looking for how to look feminine with wide shoulders, you should take style inspiration from Selena Quintanilla-Perez. She had strong shoulders but with a lot of her outfits, it's hard to notice. She and Michael Jackson are my favorite style inspirations. I think that's also why I love jackets and coats. They work well with my wide shoulders.

Look for reglan cut in shoulders and light soft fabrics like silk. Reglan softens shoulders, makes it smaller. Light fabrics don't emphasise shoulders. I'm talking about not summer open clothes.

Does anyone else have this problem where their face doesn't really 'match' their body type? My body type leans towards soft natural and theatrical romantic, as it is mostly curvy and "full", but my face is primarily blunt and masculine. Balancing the two has been a real challenge.

I’m either a gamine or a soft gamine, and find that feminine dresses and clothes that aren’t overly flamboyant suit me the most. I don’t like dressing too plain, but going over the top doesn’t suit my personality either so it’s somewhere in the middle. I know what you mean by the plastic earrings thing, some women just exude a luxurious aura.

Very informative video, thank you very much! The "recommended" examples for pure gamines featured short and semi-fitted, detailed special occasions dresses that perfectly exemplifies my dilemma. Es an older women, the short/cropped component does not feel age-appropriate anymore, so it is not clear to me what dress to wear for special occasions. Examples of longer dresses were in the "avoid" category, with which I very much agree, long vertical line does not look good (even cropped to the ankle or a bit above the ankle). Any suggestions for special occasions attire (i.e, theater, opera, ballet, weddings, anniversaries - events of that nature)... Thanks so much!

I hate the struggle that I have being a classic. I always see things I like try them on and Im like nope not me looked awesome on the mannican but on me nope and struggle to find things that fit me looks , colors , and figure. I dont know where to shop at dont know what section to look at . I like jewelry alot and I recently went ring shopping I love Square cut diamonds so I tired it on it seem to big and bulky and they told me to try on the tear drop style cut and who would have known it looked like it belonged to me and I was never drawn or attracted to that cut but I also had help everyone at the counter was like the square cut is just too bulky looking for you we cant explain it , it wasn't about the money the square cut that I had picked out costed more than the one they told me to try on . So Im basically saying is Im always pulled or attracted to things that are not for me I wish I could train myself to go straight to what is for me . Any classics out there I'd love to make some classic friends and see what they shop for and how they put it together !

I agree with you, I feel like most “trendy” things look weird on me as a classic, even though they look good on everyone around me. What I’ve found helpful when shopping is to try on everything I can find even if I don’t like how it looks on the hanger or the mannequin, and to be rather cynical about the things I think I’ll like. I’ve often found that what end up as my favourite pieces are things I actually didn’t like when I first saw them.

Hi Aly! I’m not sure if you stopped doing your ask Aly series, but I was curious if you could make a video on how to do your makeup for a drivers license photo I have a very crooked nose and those pictures are face on so my nose is what stands out the most. Recently I have tried contouring my nose by doing the contour color across my nose to get the focus away from my bump but I’m afraid to try that technique for the picture. Any advice you have is appreciated, and would definitely love to see how you would do yours for a photo to create symmetry!

Then I was told I look too masculine (tall appearing even though I'm only 5"6'!) so I needed to wear ruffles and girly flowy things to balance that out. I looked like a wild herd of ruffles had decided to overtake my body. I just disappeared inside them. Turns out I'm a Dramatic. Even with the boobs! I look amazing in angles, long lines, fabric not too stiff but not layered either. Minimalistic Boldness is what I call it lol Thanks again.
