Look. None of us are happy about box office bombs because we all love big business. But it's time to reflect of al the movie flops from 2021. Pandemic aside, there are as always some huge misfires including Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Eternals, West Side Story, The Matrix Resurrections and a whole bunch more. Will lessons be learnt? Probably not. And that's Hollywood baby. Thanks for watching us in 2021, see you in the new year which should probably be 2022.

The Last Duel of course, as we know, had a marketing budget of about $0, as nobody had ever heard of that movie until Ridley Scott complained that no one was watching it.
@JabranImran

The marketing that they did do however was practically invisible. I had seen trailers and ads for it and i still never heard of the movie until a Chris Stuckman video only to realise later that i had seen promotional material for it i just didn’t notice.

This should be labeled "Dredd marketing" where like 2012's Dredd, an otherwise very good or exceptional film tanks because no one heard about it or they arsed whatever little marketing they did do.

Is it just me, or does it seem like for a number of movies you see the trailer, think "Huh. I might be interested in seeing that whenever that is coming out.", and then the next you hear about it the movie was already out for four weeks and tanked? I feel like there's a marketing failure happening here, because I never realize when some of these come out. Plus, I legit never heard of some of these films AT ALL until this video.

I blame trailers releasing months before release. With the constant streams of entertainment nowadays it just gets pushed to the back of your brain.

I think another factor is what country your living in, what state, etc. For example, Ghostbusters Afterlife has been out for quite a while in America. Here in Australia, it's not coming out until Jan 1. Also I think Sydney, Central Coast and maybe all of NSW got some of these movies delayed. This week alone I've been seeing trailers on tv for West Side Story and a few others in this video.
@HarryBuddhaPalm

It's not just you. I never heard of most of these movies and there was a couple that I thought "that already came out?" when I saw them on this list. I didn't know Spielberg had remade "West Side Story" until last week and I didn't know it had come out already. Not that I care because I hate musicals, but still. I guess the pandemic delays caused a log jam of content and now the dam has burst and all this crap is pouring out at the same time. It's overwhelming.

I absolutely agree. I also think (at least where I am in the UK) cinemas have been showing certain films at very weird/few times. I was desperate to hate-watch dear evan hansen in the cinema but even the week it came out it wasn't on at any cinemas near me except for like an 11pm showing on a Tuesday. Bizarre.

Snake Eyes as a character is supposed to be mysterious. You never see his face, he’s a ninja, he hangs out with a wolf for no reason. He didn’t need an origin movie. He’s like Han Solo or The Man With No Name: the less you see or know, the more your mind takes over and fills in the blanks. That sense of mystery is imperative, and the character becomes infinitely less interesting when someone makes a movie where they spell out absolutely everything about the character.

The comics never really minded showing his face when appropriate... it's a mess! I think having a mute lead is the more interesting aspect, he speaks only in actions. That's hard for film (except all the times it was done successfully in film).

Same thing about Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Slugworth in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Why did we need to see Wonka’s backstory or know his struggling relationship with his father? Why did we need to see Slugworth, a character meant to be an unseen character in the original book and not an active antagonist? Why do the adaptations of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory think we need to know more about Wonka and Slugworth when they’re meant to be mysterious?

Encanto is probably a lock for Best Animated Film at the oscars, and will likely be evergreen on streaming, and that's not even counting the mountain of merchandising its generating. So Eternals the film is super-accurate to the comic book version, in that no one really hates the characters, but no one really loves them either. You bought an Eternals comic because it was a Marvel thing and might have tied into stuff you were more interested in, and occasionally it could be interesting, but it was always a ways down your reading stack.

I haven't seen Eternals yet but I'm not surprised it didn't do super well. I feel like the marketing was lacking-which is odd for a Marvel movie-but it felt like they didn't have confidence in it or maybe they wanted to put their focus elsewhere. The reviews probably didn't help either. I can't pinpoint why exactly but I wasn't as excited for Eternals as I was for Shang-Chi or Spider-Man but that might just be me. Something about the color palette put me off too for some reason. When I think of the film I think of grey.

I was very wary going into Eternals - I likewise thought the "look" might be all wrong (characters in brightly coloured outfits in real desert landscapes risking looking like Power Rangers). Once it started in the cinema, though, I was almost immediately into it (and the previously noisy rest of the audience seemed to be too) and didn't find the visual style wrong.

I saw the eternals ads everywhere. It was even much more heavily marketed over shang chi like they washed their hands with shang chi. For me I believe it just didn't seem to say or do anything interesting. It had a massive cast and diverse. Then kept talking about how diverse it was in articles. Nothing interesting about the movie itself. Then articles after just talked about hating on people not seeing it. Then something about a sex scene. Idk . Then them complaining that places didn't want it because of a gay couple . Just all around negative vibes from it that wasn't hype so it just faded.

Encanto may have flopped at the box office (though keep in mind Disney's only keeping movies theatre-exclusive for 45 days now), but I think it's been a big Disney Plus hit--pretty much everyone I know who has the service has watched it, and I know a lot of people with it. @pinealdreams1064
@pinealdreams1064 2 жыл бұрын
It's what Tarantino was getting at when he referenced retiring on 10 films. Eventually, you make so many damn films that your filmography inevitably gets cluttered up with crap - so you have as many bad films as genuinely good ones, meaning your name isn't associated with excellence like it once was. When I hear Spielberg's name I now kinda groan a little because he's become so Hollywood, so safe, so boring, that he doesn't make anything exciting or interesting anymore. He should really just retire and call it a day, because he peaked in the 90s. Same with Scott. Outside of Prometheus and Covenant - which at least had the novelty of returning to a beloved franchise - everything he makes is just kind of dull. House of Gucci is probably fine, but it doesn't have me running to the cinema.

I haven't see the Resident Evil movie either, but if it's even passable it'll be on TV _forever_ so it'll eventually be profitable. Years ago in an interview Matthew McCaughey was talking about how much money he was still making from Sahara because it's on TV all the time and he had points on the back-end.
@emanuelespinoza9325
@emanuelespinoza9325 2 жыл бұрын
As enjoyable as I found Sahara, and it's a rather underrated movie, too, the budget for that one was rather high for mid-2000s standards. Not to say that movies from that time didn't have high budgets, but when you have a movie that had a budget like that, that's pretty steep. Then again, that same year brought us Stealth and The Island, both of which didn't do well. Although The Island was the better film of those two.
@andrewshandle
@andrewshandle 2 жыл бұрын
@@emanuelespinoza9325 I think there was additional revenue streams back then too, so even a big budget failure will eventually make money. Not so sure anymore, but a small budget movie as long as it's decent should be able to eventually turn some sort of profit.

In terms of consumer convenience, I loved the HBO Max deal. I wouldn’t have ever seen Godzilla vs Kong, Mortal Kombat, or The Suicide Squad without it. However, in terms of corporate benefits, it has to be one of the worst business decisions I’ve seen in a long time. They undoubtedly lost so much money because of it, which is pretty evident by how badly The Matrix Resurrections is bombing right now.

I don’t think box office takes streaming into consideration, so for something like Encanto, the only money that’s counted comes from people who went to a movie theater during a pandemic when they easily could have stayed home and watched the same movie on Disney+. Fortunately, I think companies like Disney know not to worry too much about relatively low box office numbers in situations like that.
@RariettyC
@RariettyC 2 жыл бұрын
It's actually really disappointing that corporations now can so easily keep numbers hidden through streaming, whereas theatre releases have to be transparent through the box office. Raya and the Last Dragon (which is another animated Disney film that came out this year that no one ever seems to remember) may have technically been a bigger financial failure than Encanto, but we will likely never know because Raya had a more limited theatre release with Premier access (a la Black Widow), and Disney+ locks information away from customers. Furthermore, it's harder to support specific filmmakers if you don't know where the money for your streaming service subscription that you use to watch their films is going. The way that corporations like Disney obscure information takes the democracy away from watching new releases, and consumers usually have no clue if they are contributing to success or failure if they pay for a digital or streamed version of a film with a limited or nonexistent theatre release.
@tech34756

All casual moviegoers do is eat hotchips and lie. Scott has been releasing critical successes that bomb commercially for his entire career lol. It is always the same story, preview audiences and the studios dont like his cut of the movie and chop it up, critics then love this version, general audiences still hate it but the movies develop small loyal followings, and then he releases the director's original cut, which the small core audience loves and he blames the movie's failures on the theatrical cut. He pumps out an overly long accurate historical drama that flops horribly at least once a decade because he thinks his work is great and audiences are wrong.

I can tell you exactly why HBO Max lost so many subscribers in Q3; no yearly subscription option. Every other streaming service I subscribe to has a yearly subscription option with a decent discount, makes it easy to justify staying subscribed even during months with no new releases you are interested in. At the end of 2020 when HBO announced all 2021 movies would be on HBO Max, many people including me rushed to sign up for a year, and instead they found a monthly subscription with a six month new subscriber option. Then after that 6 months was up, we saw the $17 or so hitting our credit card statements every month even on slow months with no big release. Very hard to justify that spending continuously. HBO could have chosen to lock me in as a customer for life with attractive subscription offers, instead they chose to push away millions of subscribers.

Haven't seen any of this Boss Baby filmography, but I just know that if it was released when I was five, I would love this film to death.

Encanto was absolutely gorgeous, and mostly a good movie. I did find it to be extremely anti-climactic but it was good.

@Kevin Green It just felt like nothing was happening, no threat, no danger, and then all was fine. Idk just my opinion.

@@austininkosi1494 I think the story suffered from the speed by which it was told. It would have been a lot stronger if it was a serie or something. Now we got to meet so many interesting new characters but we barely got to see them do stuff. The threat that was the magic fading was only shown in brief things lik Luisa losing her strength and the cracks and then got sped up a bit after the dinner. Making it feel like there was little threat. The solving of the problem felt very quick making it 'anti-climatic' in a way indeed. While in the movie's timeline it took longer for the watcher it was 2 songs and they had their magic back and everything was solved. Maybe it should have ended the same way Ranpuzel had with them not getting their magic back (At least not for this movie)

@@FellightC Very well put, and I agree entirely. You pretty much articulated the reasons why I felt the way I did, and I'm glad because I couldn't really describe it, so thank you.

@@ollysherratt4220 no people like you are the problem these days, call facts something like an opinion when they’re two different things. A fact is something that is true, an opinion is what you like, the eternals was a bad movie through writting, story telling, and character writing. However if you wanna like Garbage that’s your choice, but just cause you like garbage doesn’t change the FACT that the movie is a poorly made and advertised movie. Plus you call me the sheep because I have basic understanding of the difference between a fact and an opinion? Maybe you need to stick in school or stay off the internet for a while bud.

Seems like Tom Holland should get a new agent. Obviously he's doing good with Marvel, but next up is Uncharted and I have to admit I'll be disappointed if that doesn't flop. I know Holland pushed hard for being in that, but his agent should have convinced him that he's absolutely wrong for the part.

Yeah Hollywood has been trying to cram Tom Holland into so many roles that he just doesn't fit.

Encanto one really suffered in Box office because they released it on Disney + while cinemas where still showing it . So it didn’t make much in ‘Box Office’ but probably made a lot in Disney+ Subscriptions
