Mega Transports: | Engineering Documentary
When the biggest ships have to navigate the narrowest channels - the Conveyance of the “Norwegian Joy”!
Meyer Werft in Germany is one of the biggest shipbuilders in the world. But it has a problem, as big as the ships it builds: the coast and sea are 50 kilometres away. From Papenburg, the only route to the North Sea leads via the shallow and narrow river Ems. This river is actually entirely unsuitable for conveying gigantic cruise ships. But still, every Meyer Werft ship has to negotiate this channel.
This Episode of MEGA TRANSPORTS shows the very first and thus the most difficult kilometres the brand new cruise ship “Norwegian Joy” will ever travel. “Norwegian Joy” is the world’s fourth-largest cruise ship - at 333 metres long and with a nearly 42-metre beam she is a true giant of the seas. With as yet unseen on-board attractions, she is one of the most innovative ships of its era. But: Even the smallest mistake could cause this ocean giant to falter.
For the voyage to the North Sea is full of difficulties: First, the gigantic cruise liner has to leave its covered dock. Things get very tight here. From the shipyard harbour, the Norwegian Joy starts her adventurous journey with only a few centimetres of water under her keel. She has to pass many hurdles on the way: the dock lock gate, two bridges and a barrier. Will she survive the conveyance unscathed?

To those wondering about the location of Meyer Werft: According to the company profile, the founder Willm Rolf Meyer started the business in 1795 (!) with building small wooden sailing vessels, and the river Ems was obviously more than big enough for this class of ships. The dockyards have since grown, and the Ems widened and deepened. I assume it is still financially viable to keep producing in Papenburg instead of moving shop to somewhere closer to the North Sea.

Closest I have ever come to a cruise ship was on the dock in St Johns Antigua. We were staying at Blue Waters one New Year when I heard a ship was due in, so I wandered down in scruff order 30 mins to town to take a look. There was a stage with a sound system so I bought a beer and sat talking to some locals listening to reggae till the passengers stared coming off, blubbery, pink baubly people dressed up for God knows what. Suddenly there were no locals in the square, they had all rushed over to the long line of passengers ready to fleece them for tours of St Johns etc ! Land of opportunity on a small island.

i think you got the answers... what they will do next, because there is a limit how big and tall and large and wide and deep they can build, they bill do the maximum there. and the rest will be floated down on barges and finished at their - new- shipyard. since there are about 3000 workers there and most probably double or three times that amount of people, small shops,or families depending on them, the yard has a more then big influence on local politics. that does not mean they can do anything they want, to the contrary the yard is very aware what can be done or not. but simple closing down and go somewhere else, is just no option. on the other hand, with NORO Virus, Corona Virus, and other - nasties - around, there is also a limit how big the ships will be in future. and who wants to be with 10 000 - Lemmings - on a ship? on top of it, by the time your cruise is over, you might not have seen and explored and used half what they have to offer...

Why on earth build a boat to such tight constraints when ten centimetres shallower and narrower would have made the journey out easier and quicker? Yes, you would lose a small percentage of space onboard, but I have a suspicion you could have accommodated the same number of passengers - are they really going to notice that the rooms are a centimetre narrower each? (You'd even save money on the weight saved in fuel costs) I could be wrong, but I have to ask whether this whole idea of building ships and planes to their absolute limit in size is really worth it? (It's not like the people buying cruise tickets will be impressed by cabin space that is a little bit larger than cabin space that's already huge)
