i was employed at football park in Adelaide eons ago, and worked with their number one draft pick at the time laurance angwin. young fellow, but even training you could see that he had IT. unfortunately he fell into the, free drinks and available women, everywhere he went in adelaide (his words) and subsequently was traded to Carlton, where he was eventually delisted after turning up to training off his dial on ecstasy or something similar.

Great work and a really interesting list. One that as a blues supporter that is close to my heart was Fev. He did have a solid career and was a phenomenal match winner on his day but could have been a club all time great if he had pushed himself and not stuffed around like he did. Still loved watching him as their was never a dull moment with Fev on the ground.

One player you didn't mention was Phil Carmen. Was a superstar at Norwood in the SANFL from 1970 to 1974 before finally agreeing to go to Collingwood in 1975, who had been wooing him since 1971. Absolutely burst on to the VFL scene (in those days) and would have easily won the 1975 Brownlow if not for injury which kept him out of the side for 8 weeks. Being a bit of a hot head at times, and not suffering fools, was his undoing. Was traded to Melbourne, then Essendon where he had a brain fade and headbutted an over-the-top boundary umpire (I did say not suffering fools!!) and was suspended for 20 matches, and finally played one season with North Melbourne. Still regarded with awe, but could have been a hall of fame player.

I think Nathan was wanting to avoid the public attention, thus is the reason why after the 2007 premiership he decided to avoid the AFL attention so he played in VFL or the Queensland AFL league. There was also a few other players who wasted their potential, Ronnie Burns for Geelong in the 90s and Adelaide in early 2000s, he left the game in only just around 8 years into his career around 2003.
@benwatkins85

Ronnie burns started his AFL when he was 22/23 that's why only 8 seasons He played till he was 31 so I don't think he would qualify for this list Someone like Lee Walker from wce and Collingwood is a guy who could have been on this list or even a Tony free who only played one game for Richmond but was meant to be all that and a bag of chips

Also knocked the money for the footy trip while he was at Croydon and it was common to see him at Dirty Dak with a drink in each hand and a line on each wrist. Some others I would add to your list - Marty McGrath - Lawrence Angwin - Shane Yarran (should have entered the league earlier and stayed in longer) - Marlion Pickett (should have entered the league earlier)

An accurate description of Cupido. I'm surprised to see footage of him laying a tackle (never seen him do that in real life) and kicking with his right foot. Could kick 60 metres with his left foot no problem. As someone who went to high school with him for two years, I thought he was play no more than 50 AFL games due to his lack of application and inability to successfully hip and shoulder me (I was thinned built like the late Robbie Flower). I was slightly wrong as he played 53 AFL games.

I reckon the concept of wasted talent is a funny one. Here it's presented like "they could've been great if only they were a bit different" which isn't that far from "they could've been better if only they were better". Which is fine and all. Footy, like life, is multi-faceted though and you could say personal quirks or mental skills are part of it. As a different take - you could argue John Coleman had so much more talent to give were his career not cut short. That story is well known but my take here is that the waste comes from blindingly obvious talent that didn't translate into a concrete achievement (like premierships, awards, records), for reasons largely outside the player. These are the people we know had it, top echelon stuff... but who left some greatness on the table. For Coleman, it was largely his era that was the problem. Could've been rehabbed very quickly today. Nic Nat's an intersting one too, I think he would have had 6 or so All-Aus jackets by now (and a premiership), instead of 3, but for bad timing. Honestly, look up his season by season history - clearly the most "talented" ruckman of the past decade but he's juuuust short on enough games most seasons in his prime to be eligible for AA consideration, which to me is a waste. A month or so's difference with a couple of unlucky injuries would have had him up to at least 5 for sure, which would have been a phenomenal achievement. You could make a case for Robert Harvey having his talent wasted too - most games played without a premiership. Peter Hudson too, you could say, while not wasting his talent reeeeally, could have been sitting up the top of the goal-kicking tree and achieved much greater acclaim... if his work had all been done in the same league. Edit: Oh! And Cyril as well! He achieved a lot, sure, but was one of the best with more to give, and you can't really blame him not sticking around.

Any of the very highly paid MFC players from the 80’s and 90’s. I’d also like to nominate Matthew Hayden, from cricket. Oodles of talent but he reached a stage of his career where his position might be threatened and miraculously he would pull out a great score and then relax for another year or so.

That's what Matt Rendell pointed out when he was head of recriuting at the crows. He said if you get an aboriginal player, don't get a full blooded one. He was sacked by the crows for saying this. This video suggests Rendell was right.

Jackovich is the Aussie way of pronouncing it. The European way is Yackovich. Agreed, sounded strange hearing it pronounced that way, especially for someone who watch his brother Glen play over 200 times for West Coast.

Essendon fans and Dodoro hyped him up way too much. Hawthorn didn't bother matching Essendon's bid for him in the draft, which is usually a good indicator that a player probably isn't that good

I think that Nathan Ablett was more about having other commitments that directed his drive elsewhere, rather than a lack of drive. Additionally, he is even more religious than his brother, and the media calling him the "son of God", so that sort of media attention is already vexing to him (at about the same personal level as a racial slur).

Commentators and such said Jakovich but since it’s a Croatian name it can be pronounced Yakovich.
@JaxTheGat
@JaxTheGat Жыл бұрын
@@RilesMacca it doesn’t matter it wasn’t pronounced that way once during his career. Nick Riewoldt didn’t like the Australian pronunciation of his name. He went ON TV AND TOLD THE WORLD TO CALL HIM RIEVOLDT. Nobody in the Jakovich family did such a thing by your logic. Every Smith that comes from Germany should be pronounced “Schmidt” He team mates called him JACKO FFS NOT YAKO !!! So take your attempted “smart arsery” somewhere else. You pronounce a name, the way that person pronounces their own name. You don’t take it upon yourself to go back to the way, it was pronounced in the old country when the person in question doesn’t use that pronunciation!! if anybody wants to look up any of these players after watching this video they are gonna see that there is no player called YAKOVITCH. So it’s in accurate regardless of how it was used in the Baltic states, 50 years ago
