Andy’s bass is great as always but you’re choosing to only focus on it. Marr’s guitar work on this song is otherworldly, especially after the first verse.

Morrissey repeating lyrics and just having fun with it was certainly a major trend throughout the majority of the songs with The Smiths. Still a part of his solo career but to a lesser extent. I think you'd really enjoy This Charming Man, not only does it have some seriously funky bass, but it is also one of their most recognizable songs.

Johnny Marr composed all the music, and his guitar layering / playing is beyond reach. But he mostly took a back seat to Morrisey and Rourke, which is something I admire about Marr.
@heybofe

As mentioned on The Far Out Playlist about the other voice chiming in on this track: "The band had originally planned to incorporate Kirsty Maccoll onto the track as they thought her vocals would add an extra layer to the song and invited her down to RAK studios to which she obliged. Marr is on record as saying: “That’s the first time we met her. She came down to the studio and put on these really weird harmonies.” Morrissey and Marr didn’t think her vocals worked on the track so decided to leave it off the final mix and instead Morrissey did the backing vocals in a ‘chipmunk-style’ which he managed to create through the use of a harmoniser. The backing vocals were later comedically credited to ‘Ann Coates’ on the record which is a play on words of the Ancoats area of Manchester." .......Morrissey was reported to have been laughing for quite a long time at the final result.

The lyrics. Morrissey is the titular big mouth. "Sweetness" referred to his critics, primarily the music press at the time, who took him to task for supposed controversial comments he'd often make during interviews. It's a faux apology of sorts, poking fun at both himself and the self-righteousness of such critics.

In true British style, the lyrics are ironic/ dark humour… The Smiths are indie (genre wise) probably kick started the modern indie scene… although a lot of tracks cross into different styles (like rockabilly ‘No where, fast’)

Hi! Been enjoying your Smiths reactions. I myself recently discovered them while I was homebound during the pandemic. Discovered them on You Tube and was hooked after How Soon is Now. Great guitar riff by Johnny Marr, haunting like. I do agree with your love for Andy’s bass. So sad he passed away earlier this year. Very underrated imo. RIP Andy. Listen to The Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore. The lyrics hit home. Oh and Some Girls are Bigger than Others is soo good. Johnnys guitar is amazing . Have a nice day Lauren ( is that how you spell it?) I never really enjoyed The Smiths until I finally listened closely to the lyrics of "Big Mouth" and realized it's the most flippantly sarcastic song ever (which kinda seems to be sailing past you at the moment, so I guess I wasn't alone). After that it finally all clicked for me. I think before when I had just heard them in passing on the radio I thought it was just happy jangly nonsense (happy because I'd only heard upbeat radio singles and I actually thought "How Soon is Now" was The Cure lmao). (You were asking the genre, it's often called "jangle pop", or just the burgeoning genre of indie rock via Manchester) Andy Rourke's bass is undeniably great, but tossing aside Johnny Marr's guitar is pure insanity. But if you're just more into bass as an instrument overall that makes sense. But anyway after this song finally opened my eyes I was a Smiths lover for the rest of my life. Sucks that Moz is a total right wing piece of shit now, but The Smiths are too incredible to be retroactively ruined by that.

You do know that rock is sometimes satirical and parodic and filled with inversions? See Ghost. For Madchester also see Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets. One, by the way, might argue that some early Echo and the Bunnymen songs (especially "Do it Clean" gave birth to Madchester. And that might seem odd to some given that EatB are a Merseyside band.

Totally with you about Andy's bass. Andy is the closest thing I've ever had to a musical idol. I loved the album Hatful of Hollow, because if you opened it up it had a picture of the band with Andy at the front, looking cool AF with his bass. I started listening to The Smiths around 1985, which was when I had my musical awakening as a teenager, and when the band was still active. The only band I listened more to was Echo & the Bunnymen, and still do occasionally. You should check them out too, if you haven't already.🙂 4:30-ish I think he's saying that he's sorry for what he said, but that he can't really help himself.

You know what the best Smiths song is, one which also has an awesome bassline? "What difference does it make" 🤣 FML! Edit: Yes, I also focus on the bass, but then again I am a Bassist, however Johnny Marr is one of the best Guitarists of the 80s, so while it is good you do, unlike most people, concentrate on the bass, don't just disregard the guitar as being an also ran. All 4 members are doing incredible shit!

Very kind friend, here is a key to reading this lyric. Very often Morrissey's lyrics are bipolar, i.e. there are two characters: A) the protagonist (usually himself) and B) the antagonist (who in this song could be the English press who at the time had him accused of everything, even of pedophilia in the song Reel Around The Fountain). Try re-reading the text according to this scheme: B) Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking When I said I'd like to smash every tooth In your head Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking When I said by rights you should be Bludgeoned in your bed A) And now I know how Joan of Arc felt Now I know how Joan of Arc felt As the flames rose to her Roman nose And her walkman started to melt Bigmouth Bigmouth Bigmouth strikes again And I've got no right to take my place To the human race
