I already decided and the answer is no. There is a better bike, I was wondering if GS catches up to Multistrada but it seems they were aiming more for the SAS instead. Somehow they felt the need to add so many electronic features such as the windshield which work worse than the manual ones (Triumph did a smart thing to remove it from their Tiger 1200), or combined brakes which make it hard to judge the force. They could have instead improved function of the suspension when riding fast or put a better clutch - KTM and Ducati have clutches that are much easier to modulate. Or redesign the electronic, the controls on GS were always a bit confusing and now are even more so. (Although ofc KTM and Ducati need the clutch more due to the boxer working from very low RPMs - something Multistrada tries to overcome with short gearing but only does maybe 80-90% job.) Since I'm quite tall, the GS being very small (even smaller than the 900) is also a con for me. Overall, is the GS a great and well made bike? Yes. Is Multistrada superior to it, apart from the price and fuel consumption? Also yes.

I personally wouldn't buy a big GS simply because my bike budget doesn't allow for it. My Tuareg does everything I need for half the price. BUT, I can still admit without any hard feelings, that the GSs are without any doubt the absolut Kings of allround motorcycles. Their capabilities are absolutely astonishing and I would congratulate anyone who told me that they just bought one

Ian, its so refreshing to see a KZfaqr who actually does their job! you put your money where your mouth is! the most in-depth honest reviews talking from a background of not taking a bike for a day or a weekend but actually living with a bike for a few months that you have purchased, I work in the motorcycle industry and I always push my customers to view your video's as they are to the point and informative! The fact that other channels do brief ill informed videos to the masses makes your content stand out! this channel isn't click bait material it is true informative automotive journalism. Nice job. I ordered one 6 weeks ago with all the right options and container ship arrived in NJ today. Rode 1300 with Edelweiss on Pyrenee ACT and it was terrific. Can’t wait, have boxes with LR bags, TaT rack and CW lights in the garage ready to go. Keep up the great reviews.

I forgot to mention one thing that is super important to touring riders. Wind management. This thing has the best smooth flowing wind management of any bike I’ve ever rode. On my Harley’s and sport touring bikes I was always trying the latest shield or laminar lip in the quest to get smooth comfortable air without much success. The GS1300 just flat out kills it there. I dont even raise my electric shield up, it works so well! And a quick comment on pricing. Yes it’s a ton of money. But from what I see they hold their value a lot better than most anything else. My ktm and Triumphs dropped like a rock, and everyone knows how normal Ducati models values drop like a rock. 50k mile BMWs still sell used for good money. Who’s buying a used triumph/ktm/ducati with 50k on it? And be honest, I’ve owned and loved them all and I know from personal experience!

I test rode so many bikes before deciding on multistrada V4. I personally feel like there’s nothing out there that looks sensational and rides like a Ducati Multistrada V4S in adventure touring segment. On freeways, there is no discussion at all.

Im gonna test ride both next week to try and decide between the V4S and 1300! I had an old 850 and sold it for the 1250 but switched to a 1600 and going back now! Wondering if the forthcoming 1300 adventure would be worth it for me since I dont need more range but love more wind/rain protection.

Whether it's adventure touring or just good ol' road touring, the things that should be very first, on the very top of your priority list when choosing a bike for that purpose, are, in order; 1. Reliability, 2. Center of Gravity and Weight Distribution of the bike, 3. The ability to fix and/or replace most things on the bike by yourself anyplace/anytime, 4. Environmental and debris protection, 5. Ergonomics and 6. Suspension. And BMW R GS bikes already lose 3 out of these 6 very important check marks. Over the years I did a lot of touring and adventure touring around Europe and Asia, including almost the entire Trans Euro Trail (I did about 88,000 out of 106,000 kilometers of the TET) and many other famous trails and routes, on many different bikes and with many different groups and moto clubs. The amount of times we had to adjust/change routing or wait for/stop or even put our trip to a halt because of BMW GS (and KTM) bikes and riders is more than I can count, whether it was because of reliability issues, inability to fix something or deal with the issue on the spot or just something really simple that would be a non-issue on other bikes... ADV bikes from KTM, Ducati and BMW are more of a weekend/holiday road touring bike type, than anything else. There's a reason why the starbucks stereotype exists for these bikes 😅

@nogerboher5266 if youre taking the 1300gs, v4s and 890 SMT off my list does that mean you prefer the Japanese rides? Im also interested in the Transalp, Africa Twin, Tracer 9 and 800RE but none of the Japanese dealerships allow test rides. If i cant find one to rent I cant justify any price on something Ive never tried as my new daily commuter. :( such a bummer.

@@nogerboher5266I’m not sure I agree on the premise. While there are some limitations on roadside repairs with the newer GSs, mostly having to do with electronics, most of the mechanicals are easier to work on than many other bikes. I’ve had my 2012 R1200GSA since I bought it new at the end of 2011. It is still going strong. I took it on a solo BDR last summer, so reliability had to be there. Not a single issue. I had 2 other GSs before this one and no issues on them either. To be fair, the newer water cooled boxer GSs especially since the shift cam are more complicated mechanically. Would that be a night & day difference from the earlier GSs? It’s really not that uncommon for BMW bikes to reach well over 100K miles on them, many hitting 250K. I was on a day ride to two states away last weekend and one of the other GSs with us was an R1100GS with 115K miles. We also had a R1200GSA water cooled and a R1250GS plus a 2006 Goldwing & an RT. None of them had any issues.

Ian, this is an awesome review. I am a 2022 GS1250 owner. I was in Riverside BMW on Saturday getting a new rear tire on Saturday and looking at the new bikes. They had a green one that really looked pretty nice. Hmmmmm.

Thank you again for a great video. Your first 1300GS video convinced me to buy it, now I have it for 2 weeks and I already love it. Tomorrow I will have the run-in service done and than it is time to open that throttle up for the first time (for some reason I never did that on the test ride, never felt the urge I guess). This is my first bike after 9 years of a forced break (health) and I am so confident in riding it already. It is crazy. I personally like the front a lot. Right from the very first video that was released by BMW, but I understand it is personal. I don´t mind the controls except for not being backlit, but I am not used to the controls from older BMWs, so I have a slightly different view on it I guess. The comfort seems to be a topic. I have done a 6.5 hrs ride last weekend and I started to feel my but and right knee towards the end. Might be because I haven´t ridden in so long and might need to get some flexibility into my legs again. But we will see about it latest in August, when I do multiple trips with a couple of thousand km. In worst case I have Touratech, Wunderlich. Hornig and SW Motech here in Germany. One of them will be able to provide a good seat alternative for sure. By the way, on friday the GSA video will drop on the BMW Motorrad KZfaq channel. From the light signature shown, it will have a similar front light but looks like thin stripes for aux lights. Really interested to see what it will bring besides the confirmed automatic gearbox option.

I just returned from a week long rental of a GS 1300 in Germany and Italy. I agree with all of your comments and critiques. It was the best bike I have ever ridden. We were 100% on roads and it handles awesome. By the way we had a member of Champ School along with us also on the GS. Nice informative, insightful, and balanced feedback video, Ian.

Loved the video! I turned in my beloved CBR 1000f Hurricane superbike a few years ago when the roads became just too dangerous in N. CA. I bout a 2017 KLR650. Love my KLR. I’ve never considered a BMW during my decades of riding. My buddy has 3 GS and I just never considered them. I saw the release of this bike and something intrigued me. I started watching the European reviews on it before its release in the US. You hit my algorithm and watched your vids on it. Loved this vid too! I’ve fallen in love with this bike lol. Considering pulling the trigger on a 2025 version so some of the bugs are worked out! Keeping pumping vids on it :^)

For me it just comes down to price. My $4500 VStrom + $97 a year for insurance is basically free. Moving into a 30k bike and full coverage is a totally different ballgame. Work part time and ride the crap out of the Wee or get a full time job...Uhhh

Similar to me. I have a $6000 rally raid CB500x. Commute on it, pay $150/yr for insurance, and have a great time. Hard to not see massively diminishing returns in paying 4x that for a motorcycle no matter how great it is.

Yep, I am in Australia, so things are more expensive. But last year I bought my brand new wee for $14,000, insurance, I asked if they made a mistake 😂. Apparently the combination of a wee and 56 years old means I am a danger to no one 😮😂, my confidence at staying alive rose significantly. The front suspension is terrible, the bike is 10kg, 22 pounds, too heavy. But, love ❤️ love 🥰 love 🎉the engine.

@@hair2050 The little Vstrom is a great bike. Just changing the battery and exhaust will probably get you halfway to 10kg without any real sacrifices apart from the dosh.

I just bought a couple used bikes from the local BMW dealer. I sat on the new GS. It was a lot heavier to get off the side stand than I thought it would be. I don't need the crazy power. I like my V85TT for the price and performance and weight.

TPMS needs to be on all bikes. Ian you're killing it. You talking about motorcycles, gear, and riding them is like a serenity sound generator. Soothes my soul. It keeps the motorcycle conversation going on days when it doesn't make sense to ride given life's routine. It's not easy to amass tons of subs in a relatively short timeframe in the motorcycle content segment, but keep going. Before you know it you'll be at a million and I think are the technical, realistic, and less-artsy equivalent of Fortnine. You have a niche and you're killing it. Let's goooooo!!!! BRAAAAAAP!!!

BigRock, congrats on your incredible new GS! I've been a fan of your channel since first watching your Africa twin reports a while back. I love your style of reports very much so not much to change i think, you have it nailed in a very genuine and authentic way. That GS is a beast - I find myself oddly drawn to it. I've had a 2014 Multistrada GT as my main bike (also a DR650 & 125 Monkey!) since new and found it more recently unreliable in that typical Italian way. I am 'nearly' certain I'll get either a '24 or '25MY Africa Twin ('25 supercharged?!) but you've got me 2nd guessing myself with this GS now. LOL, the way you spoke about the Africa Twin I thought THAT would be your forever bike 🙂The AT with DCT seemed like my dream bike with the tons of low-mid torque making up for the 'lowish' 100hp. Funny, 0-100kph times are within half a second compared with 1250GS! Anyway, we'll see what the '25MY brings. thank you for your great vid series of reports - you're one of the very best on YT no risk. Cheers from Sydney Australia.

Hello Ian,i always enjoy your opinion, i have a 23' GSA and come from a lifetime of Harley Davidson,got tired of cleaning after every ride and couldn't go down a dirt road for fear of messing it up,i love my bike,recently went on my first paid adventure ride,i learned a alot,it was 200 mi with 75 of that offroad with max 15 riders,the bike is heavy offroad if your a novice but im with you on the 1300,that front light just doesnt work for me,they are expensive but not much more than a nice Harley, im going keep my 23 and go adventuring,thanks for the superior content,keep up the good work you do and be safe

All valid points, I concur Ian. Price wise it’s up there, but so is everything else. I’ve owned a newer RT and honestly there’s something about these bikes, the quality of a BMW that made me feel good when riding them. Your bike is well optioned out and I’d do the same list to make it enjoyable indeed. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this sweet bike, I’d keep it for a while longer, with that undetermined length of time myself also. Well played 😎

I opted for the black cast wheels. Better look and easier to clean HOWEVER I can’t get them to look clean. Even after spending time getting the road grime off they don’t appear clean. Just a dull grey/black. Best longish term review I’ve seen so far. Well done Ian. Class.

@@BigRockMoto I appreciate that too, but these more and more expensive bikes are part of consumerism trend that may trap you in having to work harder and harder to have the newest and the greatest. Work hard, feel you deserve a reward, spend your money and then work even harder. And next year all over again. It is difficult to resist the temptation, but do you really have a better time? (saying this as a person who is also sensitive to all this and is trying to restrain) I know you pointed out the price extensively. Great review!

Thank you for the objective evaluations you do on these bikes. After a lifetime of riding mostly off road, competition at a high level, I bought a '23 KTM 890 Adventure S. I thought a lighter bike would be a little easier for me in my dotage (I'll be 70 the end of this year). I'm used to riding big horsepower. I was looking at the GS 1250, but bought the KTM because it was lighter and I stumbled on a deal that I couldn't refuse. With this review of the GS 1300, I'm going to re-visit the BMW for the electronics, the ride and handling. It's more than adequate for the off-roading I'll do with it. All I ride with the KTM is 98% on-road. Thank you for helping put a dent (BIG DENT) in my checking account. When you buy something expensive that returns high value in experience, and is actually what you want, one never thinks about the cost after the initial pain of buying it. As I've always said; "You can always get what you don't want, for less."

Great review Ian.. your channel is always so honest and informative. Can I ask if you have the SW Motech pro quick release pannier racks on? I still have my Mosco Moto 2.0 back country panniers from my old GSA and I was wondering if I could use the quick release racks from SW Motech along with my hard SW Motech top case.

Good morning. First of all, congratulations for the serious and honest video review. I own an R1300GS Trophy, with complete road setup, and I basically agree with all your observations on the pros and cons. However, regarding saddle comfort and aesthetics my opinion is more positive. In general, I consider the 1300 improved compared to the 1250, let alone compared to my previous 1200 LC. Naturally, before buying it I tried the competition several times (Ducati and KTM in particular), but I understood that the R1300GS is more suited to my motorcycling expectations and needs. At the moment I am very satisfied. Warm greetings from Italy.

You always are thorough! My 1250 has to last me for the rest of my life. I'm 67 so that might not be long!~ One thing you mentioned briefly but would make all the difference for me if I had to choose was specifically the foot pegs. I tried the very first Harley adventure bike before I bought my R1250 GSA. The peg setting and the combination of my old knees didn't work at all! Plus it took the Harley five tries to crank. My 2022 R 1250 GSA fits just right. For two years I haven't been able to stand up on the pegs like you young guys do. That is until I had a Radio Frequency ablation. They fried three nerves on each knee. (I told the Dr my nerves were already fried) Three days later I can stand up on the pegs. I'm not doing any S curves standing up and probably not going through waist deep water yet. But The fact is you mentioned the peg setting being different and that means a lot to older riders. Ian, I have met guys that want an adventure bike that stop me. They can tell me more about my bike than I know. That's because they can recall your videos practically word by word. They want to have a bike so bad but can't make the purchase just yet. Your videos are good for the riding world! Ride on!

Love your honesty! I bought the Trophy version w/ enduro pro, dynamic, adaptive height, el. screen, forged wheels, no adaptive cruise, no luggage, enduro rear seat and luggage plate. I like the front of it, probably since the screen is lower when I have no adaptive cruise. With the standard rear seat, it looks like an NC750 from the side, and thats ugly. I noticed the same as Ryan F9 with hill hold, but I talked to the dealer and read the user manual, so controlling the revs helps. I am not a friend of the gearbox yet ;-) and I do not like the Metzeler knobblies on the tarmac/asphalt. But overall I love the bike and really like the way it looks. I was surpriced over the US prices, about the same as in Norway. Norwegian prices are usually a bit higher than US prices.

Fantastic summary mate couldn’t have said it myself. This is the sort of review that needs to be out there in the market. I think I feel essentially the same as you about the headlight, I think they could’ve really done something way more beautiful with the radar. It’s pretty nice how Ducati hide their radar in between the headlights. Does beg the question for the new Euro standard about being only allowed one headlight which Ducati had avoided because their multistrand was released before the changes.

For me Ian your investigative journalism is the best on KZfaq :) I couldn’t buy the 1300gs basically because I can’t afford one, I owned a 1200gsa te 2014, f800gs 2015, 1200GS TE Rallye 2018 an now an 1150 GSA which I’m now having to sell due to us downsizing our house with my dads stage 3b/4 prostate cancer. I 100% agree the T7 I sold to get our NX500 for my dad this week. To keep him riding bikes is in a different class to me of manageability. The T7s etc I put like you into the same heavyweight category as the 1150gsa I own :) Keep up the great work Ian :)

As usual a great job on this video and of course all of your others. I recently purchased my own R1300GS trophy, and it is fantastic. It's all I thought it would be and more. No way I'd go back to any other bike on the market. One question I have is how you rigged your Mosko Moto tank bag? I'm having a hard time figuring out how to route the front harness so that it does not impact wires, shock, etc. If you can reply with your routing I would appreciate it.

Agree 100% on Hill Assist. Have it on my manual transmission car, too. On both it's seamless and I wouldn't want future manual transmission vehicles without this feature.

Adaptive seat height. I had an '05 Gs for 110,00Km over 10 years. At 5'8"1/2 the bike was always High. I learned how to handle it.Did coast to Coast tro Coast 2 up ...42 days on the road. The height and the top heaviness never disappeared.....Several years later I ride a 23 year old R 1150 R and the joy of reaching the ground comfortably!!!!! No more dropping anxiety. The height and the top heaviness never ever disa[pears. I sat on the 1300 with the adaptive suspension....Forgot i was on a Gs. I agree 10000% that it is a game changer.

Straight up no bull shit review. Spend time with it. I'm all in for safety. It's good to live life. Telelever. I first rode it on my '93 1100RS and there has been nothing like it since. Firm believer in it. Total control of the chassis. Never doubt it. All others are inferior in performance. I don't give an F what others think. Good vid. It's a great bike. The RT will be but I really want to see the new RS. will it have Telelever? Only hope so.

Solid video again Ian. Nice Job. I am struggling as I'm torn between the new 1300 GS or the Multistrada V4 Rally. Can you help break it down for me, which bike is better? I will long distance the one I choose and do light off roading as I also have a Norden which is pretty sweet off road. I am leaning towards the Multi Rally bc my dealer is 45 miles away versus 140 miles away from me and I think the ride and overall quality will be a tad better with the Ducati. I have had GS's before and they are special and I kind of bond with them but, this new V4 Rally just looks like the best in class bike to beat. I am going to look at it on Tues and possibly buy it then. Please help with your valuable experience. Thanks again. Maurice Haroche

Interesting feedback and honest review, thanks ! There's on thing you didn't mention I think, it is the removal of the brake light in favor of the dual function turn indicators. For someone riding everyday it is a real big issue in terms of security and rear visibility. I see some 1300GS on the road in the traffic, filtering before me and their rear visual signature is not good compared to other bikes and my 1200GS. It raises the risk of getting hit both by cars or other riders not paying the right attention. A strange decision when BMW added radar and auto cruise at the same time !

I completely agree with you about the hill start control. When I first got it, I wasn't used to it, and I would deactivate it before pulling away because it felt jerky. However, after some time, it seemed to adapt and work seamlessly. Perhaps it has some kind of adaptive logic that learns from how you ride.

Absolutely the best review I’ve seen so far on the new GS. I’m waiting on the GSA and am seriously considering moving up from my GSA1200. The biggest concern you have given me is the ergonomics and seat comfort. At 6.2 and 220 I can’t afford less leg space and a harder seat. And at the price not wanting to upgrade the seat. I love all the new tech and strongly agree that the lack of control backlighting is ridiculous at this price. Jesus the Goldwing had it twenty years ago. We’ll see what this Friday brings and if the new GSA is what I hope for. Or I’ll be shopping for the last of the 1250’s.

I’ve got a later model 2018 1200 GSA with Tractive suspension. I’ve not yet been convinced I want a more complicated; higher compression engine moto.

@@andrewpeter6128 I hear you. I have the Touratech suspension and it's perfect in addition with too many other farkels I'd hate to buy again, but that is the moto paradox. I'm getting on Ian's page to having 1 bike do 3 things which would have me selling my K1600GTL and just using the GSA as a Touring bike as well. I need to start thinning the heard in my garage.

I too should thin the heard. However, even though my GSA does everything better than my 3 Italian jobs, the latter always puts a smile on my face. Yet, when a big trip arises and when I need to carry supplies and when the going gets tough; I commonly reach for the Bavarian.

I had the possibility to buy a 1300 but instead I’ve choosen the latest 1250 model…One of the last 3000 unis of the Ultimate Edition! For me it was very easy to choose!!! Regards from Portugal 🇵🇹

Fantastic review Ian. Covered everything of interest! As a 2022 Multistrada V4s owner you have me wanting to take a test ride of this one. I understand the 1300 can’t hold a candle to the Multi in the power department but the overall package seems very appealing. No spokes for me too, have never figured out everyone’s fascination for spoke wheels. Look forward to your continuing series on the 1300. Keep up the great work. Cheers

Honestly the acceleration of the 1300 is close to the Multistrada. Maybe because of the additional torque. At high RPM and above 80 mph, I think the Multi will still pull away though... the V4 is simply amazing

This is compelling if it were not God awful ugly. Went to test ride one and while seated, revved the throttle and the bike immediately felt off balance. Promptly got off and purchased the 2024 triple black GSA. You are the first sincerely favorable review I have seen on this bike.

I. LOVE. MINE. There is only one flaw, the dang seat angle. 100% agree it’s the best road going motorcycle. Checks all the boxes. I loved my Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer, loved my 1290R Super Adventure, Goldwing Tour DCT, Concours14, Speed Triple 1200RS etc etc my list is long. What a time to be a motorcyclist with so many great choices! I’ve never been a BMW fan despite demoing a ton over the years always considering them. After over 30 bikes this is my all time favorite. I’m just patiently waiting for my RDL seat date then I won’t be able to stay off this thing.

The GS has long had an adjustable seat angle by putting it in the high setting in the front and the low setting in the back. Is that no longer the case?

@youtubeaccount9058 nope. There's an adjustment but it's only at the back of the seat and it feels like it just pushes the middle area of the back up like a hump.

As I’m getting older I moved to a Multi V2S after three GSs, if I bought another GS I would have the adaptive height feature as with a 29” inseam it would give me so much confidence at low speeds etc. I like the new look but I think the dash is over complicated, I’d rather use a button anytime. As usual a great real world review Ian, I’m certainly testing one next time but as a road rider I still prefer the Multi V4S. Luggage I’d choose SW-Motech, I’m a big fan of all their gear… PS. Agree with you re the front end but you can’t see it when you’re riding, regarding the price yes it’s too high but here in the UK it seems to be reducing for low mileage ex demo models etc.

Like always, great honest review. Love to see a comparison between the big GS to the KTM Super ADV. 10K is a big difference. Also, a comparison to a more reasonably priced ADV bikes, like the Guzzi Stelvio, the New Africa Twin Sport with the 19 front wheel and the Tiger 1200 GT Pro. Thank you for the content.

I completely agree on the hill start assist, though I have an R1250RS. Also, I think it was dumb to move the on/off switch from the center. If they left it where it was, they could have used that position on the right for a more useful button.

I absolutely agree with you about the seat comfort. Recently I rode my friend's 1250 GSA, and its seat was SOOO much more comfortable. Are you aware of any aftermarket seat, that is more comfortable, or any that is coming on the market soon?

You didn't mention pillion much, but thank you for the detailed review! I've been riding 40+ years & never liked GS's (too agricultural feeling vs Japanese and Euro sport/adv touring bikes or Tigers), but the R13 has me reconsidering.
