Alec Laird was born in his granny's bed at Liddel Farm, The Orkney Islands on the 17th of June 1942.
After a brief stint working on a harbour tug, he joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16. He still works at sea on board an ERRV (Emergency Response & Rescue Vessel) in the North Sea..........This is his story in his own words.....

@@Bigwavemaster1 I noticed you'd stopped {Muted} what Alec was saying... But his face said what he was talking about wasn't pleasant to recall. An old Workmate of ours had been in Singapore during WW2... He used to have a dark sense of humour as well, from the grim things they'd had to deal with as a young men.

Thank you very much. We are at sea at the moment but I shall be producing Part 3 when I get home in a couple of weeks. Alec is going to send me a DVD of some of the jobs that he’s worked on. I have no idea yet what is on there but he assures me that it is all declassified material. Sounds interesting. I shall be incorporating it into the videos.

Good to see you back, lads. I'm looking forward to this series! Seasick? Nonsense. Alec has been on the water so long, he must get land sick. He must be confusing the two. 🤣 He has certainly lead an interesting life. 🤣🤣 Sank the ship in the harbour. 🤣🤣 I bet one wouldn't need to count very high to reach the total for the amount of times a healthy ship has gone down in a harbour. He was a strapping lad in his youth. A woman in every port kinda guy. Great vid. ✌😎

They coudnae keep you down! Glad to see you back! 💪🌊⚓🐟 Decided to look you up after algorithms played a video about an Oil Rig disaster ''Ocean Ranger'' early 1980's. There were no survival suits onboard, men were found{RIP} dressed in pyjamas from a chaotic evacuation, men so cold in the water that they were unable to grip ropes thrown for them. This reminded me of the ''Scoop'' you have to help rescue people suffering from hypothermia. Hopefully Safety has moved on a lot in the last 40 yrs. Regarding Hammocks, Our Dad had a hammock in Royal Navy {National Service} and said they were comfy. Seasickness.. Very honest of Alec to admit to it, but North Sea is not known for her calm waters.
@Bigwavemaster1
@Bigwavemaster1 2 жыл бұрын
It was the same with Piper Alpha. Survival suits are quite difficult to put on and very cumbersome. Great of you have a bit of warning. That said, the only people who survived Piper Alpha were those who did not do what they were trained to do.

Interesting career - wow ! I admire your dogged persistence and polite efforts to engage with him because he appeared to give up words as reluctantly as the sea gives up a sunken ship - and that is in no way a criticism - he is like me , not much of a talker . It's admirable that you have taken the time to document his life and some of our own history - sober moment remembering how the sea & air are very unforgiving environments . Great stuff . [One thing though - I was pretty disappointed at the 19:14 mark with the censorship .]
@Bigwavemaster1

The censorship was because family of the deceased are still alive. Alec was describing how they distanced themselves from the realities of their job.
