Thanks! Believe me, we were feeling the intimidation of the animal. It even took issue with a car early in the viewing. We did have traffic behind us but that wasn't our focus. Trying to be wise, give the animal room, work with traffic, and survive. That was the primary mindset swirling around upstairs. And yes, there's always room for uglier, but that's just life on a bike. The experience of riding isn't for everyone but for those of us that do, it's in the same truth of greater risk = greater reward.

There was a lot of discussion that evening about the situation. We're just average guys that enjoy motorcycles and the outdoors. Don't let the demeanor fool you, we were intimidated. The weather behind us closed that direction as an alternative so, without discussion, we all came into that moment like, "Well, let's see if we can get through this." It was my idea to visit Yellowstone, and this is one of two moments that have created the decision to never return (on a motorcycle). When the bison turned sideways and halted my dad, I was very afraid of a charge, but he started backing up and the bison seemed to accept that. From there, it was a matter of reading the animal and making a decision. The other moment is in a video on this channel, but I don't recall which one off the top of my head. We came to an intersection and there was a line of traffic. It stopped us just a few feet from a feeding bison on our right. Because my cycle is red, my dad rolled up between us and said, "I don't know if buffalo are like cows and can be triggered by something red, so hopefully, this helps!" We were close! Too close! I want to say 10-15 feet. I've seen others get gored (videos) from that range. Still, the experience of Yellowstone on two wheels was amazing. If it weren't for the traffic combined with the bison, I'd do it again. The mix is a recipe for disaster.

@@kennethgoin628 People from all over go to the annual bike rally in Sturgus. And some take side trips on their bikes to the park. Oh, all the various encounters between people and bison. I worked 6 summers and 3 winters in the park. My first summer ("85) my roommate and I went for a hike at Storm Point. She was wearing bright orange and I was wearing bright red. We were in the open field (at the start of the hike) and seemingly out of nowhere, here comes a BIG male, straight for us. One lone tree and my roommate & I headed for it. I got up in the tree, my roommate's backpack got caught in a branch. So, I had a birds eye view of her and this buffalo doing quite the dance around that tree.

@@cliffords.8341 How I wish you could get the chance to see them. A beautiful majestic animal indeed. There are many organizations both private and public that work with buffalo. And many of them are tied together in their research and efforts to keep the herds coming back, healthy, and with good blood lines. They trade animals back and forth to protect and strengthen blood lines. They share any health problems and treatment as well as nutritional news. You may just go on line and check for anyone in your area that maybe raising buffalo as there are a number that are scattered all around the country. Here in Nebraska there is a chance to view them just off I-80 at the Alda exit, exit number 305. This is called the Sandhill Crane Trust and Museum, and is an interesting stop if you are coming down I-80. It was started due to the majestic bird names the Sandhill Crane which stops on it's migration north in our area for a rest from about mid March thru early April. And they have a buffalo herd as well. I would call ahead to check availability of the buffalo. The covid thing has been hard on viewing schedule. They often can be seen from the interstate and their museum. But to get a good look, it would be wise to check ahead with them. Ted Turner of early cable tv fame has a large ranch with buffalo up in the Nebraska Sandhills, but I do not of know the availability of viewing them. The rancher that we visited with is a private rancher who started buffalo ranching as a hobby. He and his wife both have other companies that they work at. But last time I chatted with him, he said that he felt the hobby is now the big business. I could not let any of his information out without his okay, which I am not sure he would give. I would hope that you would find someone in your area that raise and also would allow viewing of these examples of animals of the praires.

I know motorcycles are easy to get around and they can go a long ways on fuel but they're no match for nature they need to ban motorcycles from them parks and any person that gets out of their vehicle should be either ticketed or arrested stay in your vehicles and you won't get hurt or you won't get killed.
@kennethgoin6283 жыл бұрын
Don't you think that's a rather shallow point of view? What next, ban hikers and campers too? Wildlife is everywhere, not just parks. In terms of tolerance, acceptance, and the word freedom, just because it's not something you'd personally do or agree with doesn't mean choices should be removed or further legislated. It's a fallacy of utopian thinking. You can't rule everyone into a single mindset. Furthermore, on what authority does you're point of view stand as the right one? Just leave it be before you all come up with reasons to ban humanity itself from the nature preserves.

Hi Liz, the situation is a little more dangerous than you might think. Cars are blocking part of the road, limiting our avoidance area, and at first visibility, the bison turns to nail a car but pulls back by the miss. Getting head bumped by a bison can knock a rider off the bike and after that, well.... they're not cows and will pursue to their hearts content, sometimes killing humans as a result. Yellowstone has numerous negative encounters every year. Here's a video link that shows exactly what we were trying to avoid. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a71poLacy77ZlX0.html

Not entirely. The majesty of the landscapes.... just the scenery is enough to want to go there. It's not a zoo or a drive-thru safari. It is a nature preserve but we have nature all over the place, not just parks. Riding bike gives a feeling of being "in it". No barriers. Greater field of view. Greater sensory experience. Think about the history of the world for a moment. Was it really meant to be explored in a box? We have always ventured into it, subject to the things that be. Of course we try to do things with some knowledge and wisdom but there's nothing like being a little vulnerable to capture a fuller experience and discovery. I realize it's not for everyone but like the Geico commercial says, "Those that get it, do."

As for going by slower, did you not see that bison take issue with that little red car early on? I can use my resources or possibly get hurt. The choice is easy. Furthermore, provide some hard core fact research about anything I did that upset an ecosystem or traumatized an animal. Compare it to nature itself. Is a hungry wolf pack more stressful? Once again, incomplete considerations. Do you see all the cars lined up? Have you researched cumulative decibel levels? Everyone accelerating a little at a time, you'd find that only 30 feet off the road, the combined exhaust volumes are nearly the same as a bike and RVs, they're even worse. At highway speed, a car's tires carry every bit as long and loud as anything else on the highway when in a quiet wilderness. More so, these are all factory Japanese bikes, which are far quieter than the American brands. A GoPro can pickup normal voice volume quite well, these bikes aren't that loud. Heck, my neighbors love me because most of the time they don't even know if I'm coming or going. Some bikes do not equal all bikes.

We also had weather pushing us from the south, weather that included thunder snow. You can shake your head, but we're on a trip. Can you understand that? A trip. Dates are set, weather will do what the weather is going to do, and a hearty person will roll with it and take in the richness of the experience as a whole. Nothing about a highway ruins their nature or their life experience. They're more worried about mating/reproduction, food, and predators, Their natural world is far more deadly and disturbing than anything presented by a trio of outdoor enthusiasts who also happen to like motorcycles.

@@@darlenelovre848 We're good. I was actually writing my response feeling very light hearted but it's easy to miss such ingredients in the written form. I'm often in a hurry so I tend to come off very direct and forward.... that wasn't intended so, no worries...I'm not angry or anything, I just thought I'd offer up some causes for what it might be that you were specifically hearing. Happy trails to you and yours and THANK YOU for the friendly approach! :)

Oh.... sorry... you must not have told it right! Ha ha! See.... now that's a joke! Did you see the twist there, feel the delivery??? I didn't even have to curse (which is code for "needs a bigger vocabulary") or call you a name like.... Jerkwad, the Cowardly Piffer, or "Spanksicus Himselficus Oftenous", you know... if you prefer Latin humor, like they used in Road Runner cartoons....Meep! Meep! Either way, keep working on it, you'll get better with more practice. Say "hi" to your mom for me! (David Spade influence there..... good stuff!)
