I run up on a big black bear and taste-test some white squirrel fudge on this edition of Joyful Trails! Come with me as I explore Brevard, North Carolina, the Land of Waterfalls, and the Pisgah National Forest. We'll ride the Estatoe Trail for a very unique experience compared to the typical greenway or rail trail.
I'm Scott. I explore, review and rate bike trails on this channel...and hopefully find a little joy in the journey. Thanks for watching!

Should do a commercial for Depends. "Depends, perfect for those days when you may just run across a black bear that leaves a brown mess"

Welcome to the club Scott. The best way to see bears is to not want to. I have seen them on the New River Trail in Virginia and the Greenbrier in WV. For the record, the bell on my bike scared the bears off or maybe it was my scent after three days of camping.

Wow! I watched a KZfaq video of a guy on the Greenbrier not too long ago and he ran up on a bear that was literally on the trail. He was like me… He didn’t know exactly what to do or how to handle it. So he just waited for the bear to move on and then he slowly and carefully peddled on down the trail. I know that people say “they’re more afraid of you than you are of them”… but when you’re actually in the situation, it’s a very nerve-racking experience!

I can relate to your fear of bears ! Mine was at night walking up a trail ! Let’s just say , every hair raised on my back wouldn’t have saved me ! Lol For the record , it was a full moon night . When I turned on my flashlight so see more clearly , it was as a fat cedar tree . Amazing what the mind thinks up in a matter of seconds . 😂

I’ve seen bear several times while riding in Pisgah. Mostly in the Bent Creek section, and also in DuPont. My wife and I were on the New River Trail one time and we saw a baby bear playing with a stick on the trail ahead. There was a rock face on one side of the trail and the river on the other and my wife asked me what we should do. As we approached the cub it took off into woods at the end of the rock face and I told her to pedal like she’s never pedaled before since I was sure Mama bear was close. The lady that passed you on Estatoe looked like she was on a gravel bike. Another great video!

Wow…😳 I think that’s the closest I’ve ever been to a wild animal in an uncontrolled situation. Although I do get asked as part of my day job to go and videotape animals at our city zoo. One time I was in an enclosure with an alligator, and he turned and hissed at me. I started backing away slowly. 😂 And another time an orangutan tried to spit on me. Thankfully, there were bars between us. I got to videotape a lion getting a root canal one time…but the lion was, of course, put to sleep for the procedure.

Trust me that bear was more afraid of you than you of him. Never seems like it at the time. Be happy you Saw the bear. The old woman knew. Bigfoot's scare all the bears away so you know you were actually very safe with black bears left. Again that elderly woman knew exactly what was going on. That's why she wanted to see it as well. Makes her feel safe cuz she knows the bigfoot's not around anywhere when the bears are present. Good ride Scott.

Another trail to check out if you haven’t is the Fall Line Trace in and around Columbus, Ga. That trail plus the river walk trail gets you about 26 miles. Probably no black bears to be found.

One of these days I’m gonna go back to Columbus (I was actually born there) and do a proper joyful trails video review of the Chattahoochee Riverwalk, as well as the trail that you mentioned. I’m not sure exactly when I’ll get that done, but it’s high on the list.

I have been watching your videos for a while now .spend the forty dollars on a can of bear spray . It’s not a bad investment . I carry it on my gravel bikes . Not just for bears for the occasional rabid dog lol and if you encounter an unsavory character on the a path/trail . Put a whistle in your bag to . Keep up the great videos .

Funny thing is...on my way home from riding a trail yesterday, I saw a decent-sized black bear cross the 4-lane highway I was on - about 20 miles from my home... they're everywhere here lately!

Thanks for the video! How long is the trail?
@joyfultrails
@joyfultrails 10 ай бұрын
The Estatoe Trail ‘proper’ wasn’t very long. About 3 or 4 mi out and back. But it connects to something called the Art Loeb trail, that is much longer and has a higher degree of difficulty. It also connects on the other end to a flat, paved greenway that runs through the town of Brevard, called the Brevard Bike Trail.

In the interest of full disclosure… I was actually in Brevard to ride the Brevard Bike Trail, a nice calm, boring little paved trail. 😂 But it happens to connect to this Estatoe Trail and my curiosity got the best of me. So my trip to Brevard is going to turn into 2 joyful trails episodes, not just one. Fortunately, the tires on my Townie are pretty substantial and they handled that trail pretty well. I don’t know if you noticed, there was one shot where a chick on a skinny tire bike went zooming past me… I don’t know how she was managing that trail with that bike! But she was.

i have lived in bear country, Alaska, and here i am in SC, i have bells on my mountain bike i also carry bear spray with me for all those people that refuse to put their dogs on leashes. but back to the bear, unless it is a mama bear with cubs, they are more afraid of you than you are of them.
