I have to say I am quite mesmerized by how well you speak. You don't use filler words like "like" or "um", instead you use thoughtful pauses that allow your words to land fully. You have a voice for public speaking and podcasts. I think you could also record audiobooks. Another cool reaction with your comments and thoughts.

My friend’s bf got a tummy tuck, and she said he had been instructed to keep a very strict diet for a certain of time after the surgery. Of course the real goal is to continue the healthy lifestyle, but post surgery they stressed that it was very important to eat very healthy and clean while healing. She said her bf didn’t do what they recommended and he’s now gained almost all the weight back. I believe most people realize that and will only do the surgery if they know they are determined and therefore are willing to foot the bill. Cause that’s a lot of money to throw away by just going back to the same bad eating habits. And I’m sure the doctors must really stress that before they book anything. But unfortunately, it’s very much a mental health issue. Some people stress eat, or go on binges when they’re having a depression episode, some have eating disorders- if you don’t have the tools to counteract those, you’ll fall right back into it whether you intended to or not. I think as a society we have a twisted perspective of obesity. It’s not just people not caring about their health or appearance. It’s not people who truly value food over other things. It stems from a much deeper issue. And until we realize that, we can’t fix it. It makes me sad to see people throw away money they don’t even have for quick fixes when they will end up back at the same place at the end.

In one prospective study of about 700 people who had had gastric bypass surgery, within 24 months 50% had gained all the weight back. I like your analogy with the lottery. I’d venture that another analogy would be like those hoarder shows where crews come and clean up their houses, but they don’t get to the root of the matter, which is, why did they become that way? It’s a Band-aid for a deeper wound.
@NoProtocol
@NoProtocol Жыл бұрын
Such a valid analogy, Elaine! I hadn’t thought about the hoarders, but you’re right it’s a surface level solution for a deeper rooted problem. 50% in 24 months is an illustration is that. Thanks for sharing!

I worked with a Student Nurse who went to Turkey for gastric band surgery. It cost 5 grand but it worked. He lost a lot of weight compared to the pre pic he showed me. The scars are small too. Yet, weeks later a patient came in with a very high CRP (in the 700s) who told us a similar story of returning from Turkey with what was supposed to be keyhole surgery but his whole chest was opened up and sutured closed.

If you like The Twilight Zone, I'd recommend checking out a more modern series that's in the same spirit-- Black Mirror. The creators do a wonderful job of showing you an amazing piece of technology, or an idea that makes you think "Oh that would be super cool!" and then revealing why it might not be. It's a nice commentary on a lot of modern and slightly futuristic (but realistic) problems in society. I'd love to see your reaction and hear your thoughts on a lot of those episodes. :)

on the lottery winner - liposuction analogy, your analysis on why they both fall back to the before state is spot on imo. They had a shortcut and didn't earn it so no idea how to keep it. Small caveat tho: the difference is that the lottery winner changes his behaviour while the one that got fat removed didn't which is the driving force for each to end up back at the beginning

In Turkey, such operations are much cheaper. A Turkish friend of mine, who is at Harvard, needed to get his tooth fixed somehow; so he came back to Turkey, got the operation done, stayed a while and went back to US. He said this was more affordable, probably because TRY plummeted over the last year. And afaik health stuff over there is quite expensive, not hard to imagine how costly plastic surgeries and operations would be.
