Focus on getting those off the street and you will make our communities a great deal more safe. but criminals don't make their own guns. They get them from the supply of legal guns. A gun only becomes an "illegal" gun when it falls into the hands of a criminal. For that to happen a legal gun owner needs to lose his gun. There is a direct link between criminals and "illegal" guns and legal gun owners so legal gun owners are very much a big part of the problem. If you want to keep your gun then maybe you should face the same sentencing as any criminal caught using that gun. Example if a criminal is given life in prison for murdering someone using your lost gun (or a gun you sold him etc) then you should also face life in prison. Maybe that would set up an incentive to be more responsible with your gun. Right now gun owners don't feel any of the effect of gun crime. They create an externality into our society and it is society that bears the cost of the gun owner. Since no gun owner would agree to going to jail for a crime they didn't commit (although they created the situation for it to happen) then another way for them to feel the cost of the externality they put on society is to just take the gun away. They prove that they are not responsible enough to have that privilege (and key word is "privilege" not "right" you don't have the right to have a deadly weapon in our society).

A sword is also a deadly weapon, so is a crossbow or a bow and arrow, or a flintlock rifle. So we should ban those too?

Also, according to statistics Canada, Licensed gun owners are 1/3 as likely to commit a crime compared to the general population. So actual statistics are against everything you're saying.
