SARS-CoV-2 infection in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis of standardised seroprevalence studies, from January 2020 to December 2021

We report high seroprevalence in Africa,
suggesting greater population exposure to SARS-CoV-2 and protection against COVID-19 disease than indicated by surveillance data
As seroprevalence was heterogeneous, targeted PHSM and vaccination strategies need to be tailored to local epidemiological situations.

Are African deaths simply unrecorded?
Dr. Thierno Baldé, W.H.O.’s Covid emergency response in Africa
We have not seen massive burials in Africa.
If that had happened, we’d have seen it
Dr. Abdhalah Ziraba, epidemiologist, African Population and Health Research Center in Nairobi, Kenya
A death in Africa never goes unrecorded, as much as we are poor at record-keeping
There is a funeral, an announcement:
A burial is never done within a week because it is a big event.
For someone sitting in New York hypothesizing that they were unrecorded - well, we may not have the accurate numbers,
but the perception is palpable.
In the media, in your social circle, you know if there are deaths
Dr. Demby, Sierra Leone health minister
We haven’t had overflowing hospitals.
We haven’t
There is no evidence that excess deaths are occurring

I'm from Canada. I was kicked out of university for not being vaccinated and moved to Denmark before the November 30th restriction on travelling outside of Canada. I'm quite glad I never took the shot and am quite happy here with a good job. If there's anyone out there struggling due to the societal shunning of being unvaccinated, I hope my story can give you some hope.

I am in South Africa. My guess is early treatment and prevention with a certain drug that shall not be mentioned and some vitamins. I do think we've always had a lot of cold and flu viruses circulating as a matter of course and don't take flu vaccines so maybe some cross immunity, and innate immunity from playing outside in the dirt as kids. Most of us have had covid especially Delta wave in June / July and survived so strong neutralizing antibodies. I agree with Dr John and his guest there are much bigger problems in Africa. The money wasted on covid vaccines we do not need should go to other things like malnutrition, malaria, good water supply, etc

I don't think we (in Africa) go for the flu vaccination as much as Europeans do. We just get sick and go on. That has made us more resistant to the next flu season. Most of the rest of us are done with vaccines at 6.

Beyond my childhood vaccinations which I had as a child I have never ever taken any other vaccination and I do not intend to do so. One of my sister's suffers from epilepsy and in hindsight I believe this was caused by a vaccine. My dad is +70, my mother +65, my MiL 85.. my great aunt + 90, all of them have had this virus. Ivermectin, Azithromycin, Vitamin D is what they took. They survived and I thank God for that. Just so you know, actually there is no such thing as natural immunity with Covid-19 until one gets it and develops it. Then they can say they have acquired natural immunity to the Covid-19 virus. But some variants are different so NI can vary depending on the variant, or even the strain within a variant like BA-1, BA-2, XE. Who knows what maybe next, no idea. No, guess you do not make any money on building ones own antibodies to a virus, but it can also kill you as well. Only one guarantee in life, that is death. All the best.

I see the sub-Saharan Africans losing their "weaklings" to malaria in childhood; being younger; being less obese; smoking less; living with fewer vehicles on the ground and fewer planes flying overhead; and walking around and waiting for the minibuses under the hot sun. I was told that they eat less sugar and they don't eat processed foods and that they eat the local diets of foods cooked from scratch.

I am from Zimbabwe and South Africa. The urbanised population are obese, eat white bread and coke as a meal. They live in very poorly ventilated shacks with overcrowding. The smell of smoke can be overwhelming, from vehicles as well as open fires. Often the cooking is done on open fires or a gas hot plate inside with poor ventilation. Yes the people do die from all those diseases.

It’s been interesting at our house. We live in western Canada.I got the vaccine. So did my siblings. My sister got a blood clot in her lung. My brother got one behind his eye and has suffered greatly and is blind now. My husband and kids choose not to get it so they got COVID but had mild symptoms. My husband got it and took Ivermectin which I was still able to purchase at a steep price last July. He took 9 mg every 6 hours for 3 days, took it easy for a week and was fine. He is 73. I did not get COVID but think 2 will have to be enough. However I know of a few people who died. The whole business seems a bit of a lottery but Iam impressed by those who took the Ivermectin. What made me angry was the government taking away peoples ability to THINK for themselves and the FREEDOM OF CHOICE. It’s become obvious that BIG PHARMA played on peoples fears and lack of information, in order to make a MASSIVE amount of money. Here in Canada if you are unvaccinated you cannot fly anywhere and federal mandates are still being strongly pushed. Our truckers lost the mandate struggle and many lost their Jobs, as did all medical people who were unvaccinated. Some truckers and pastors are still in jail. There is a pall over our small towns and people feel suppressed. So many people are confused and we are astonished that they still listen to mainline media.Justin Trudeau is making more and more legislation but we only find out the day of. He has also conned a small minority group to endorse his ideas and they agreed to keep him in power for his full term which is another three years. He may be handsome and charming but I along with a lot of others are grateful for the the EU who told him his presence there was not welcome. FREEDOM is precious to them. My parents were smuggled out of the Soviet Union, Zaporoznia Ukraine actually so I thank God often for my civil liberties and am very sad that people do not seem to realize that we are losing them. Also as the Uganda doctor kind of hinted at many vulnerable people would have died of other diseases before cov gets them. While I agree that in general the risk of Omi is vastly exaggerated but it can be deadly for some populations like the very old and people with serious long term illnesses and it is possible that those are small in Africa because so many other diseases would have killed them before cov. It is important to be mindful of confounding when looking at data.

I’m so glad you talked about real problems, it’s shameful to say the least that after the worst of covid is over they want Africa to spend billions on vaccines they now don’t need . Why don’t we talk all the profits we’ve made and give it to poorer nations to help with real ongoing issues like malaria and aids.

I once attended a church meeting, where the ways to dispose of surplus funds in donations were discussed. I suggested using the money to help combat AIDS, help orphans and poverty in Africa. (This was 20 years ago when Africa was barely getting any help with AIDS and its related problems). There was absolute refusal to send “a single penny to Africa”, because “it’s corrupt”. I left the church because of this, but complained to the minister on my way out the door. Apparently, he gave the congregation blistering ears about their lack of Christian love after that. Its really quite simple I think. Vitamin D levels, from naturally absorbed UVB, are continuously available on or near the equator. Therefore immune response for most people is good. Only those older people, particularly with comorbidities, are the ones who were and are at greater risk. The average age of African populations are low. In Uganda the median age is 17 years. To quote a doctor who was sharing a youtube video with Andrew Wefwafwa “ Omicron is the vaccination that nobody made”. After the past two years of COVID of listening to the outpouring of vaccination pushing by WHO you come to realise that he who pays the piper calls the tune - which follows from your sharing of the BMJ article. The influence of Big Pharma on public health advice globally is pernicious and profit driven. Why is it, from the perspective of living in Uganda, that when I ask any visitor from the UK if they understand the importance of vitamin D to immune and general bodily health, they look at me blankly?

I'm in NB canada and it's getting better here but there's still at least half people in grocery stores wearing masks, most employees and a lot are wearing cloth masks which are known to be more harmful than nothing. But it is getting better at they are not wearing them outside to much any more lol. Covid19 particle is .1 micron, only the N95 has a chance of blocking it. Putting on the mask and taking it off also requires the correct procedure to make it affective. Pretty sure people just take them in and out of their pockets lol. It's a scam.

Dr Campbell I want to thank you for showing us this. Currently the government in South Africa is proposing that state of disaster is extended despite this fact of cases dropping significantly. These new regulations are extremely intrusive. If you interested check out on dearSA. Would appreciate your opinion on this matter. How can they do this based on no evidence. #Edit# the state of disaster is ended. With a few transitional measures. More like "we want more power and control over you" measures. Scary if you read the gazetted proposals.

Well. While Omicron did emerge in SA, it was still mid spring when it emerged. There might be some suspicion that spring quelled the top of the peak. Well spring in combination with immunity that is. But of cause, coming into winter with omicron low level circulation i would think the uptick would be fairly slow, so i would not think there is cause for panic. I would be more worried if i lived in New Zeeland where there is very little immunity.

Namibia is about 12% Vaxxed and just as much natural immunity, but knowing our government they will wait for an uptake in winter cases to slap on more mandates........ I do not think that the "Younger" Demographic has much to do with the resistance toward the virus, it has more to do with our daily lifestyles being a lot more rugged than American or EU lifestyles, we have less than ideal hygiene conditions which means that our immune system is a lot more resistant or stronger...... Then again.... This is just my 2 cents worth..... Thank Dr Campbell.

Covid is usually a lot more severe among old people than young - thus an older population will everything else being equal obviously be more severely affected. Eg. the life expectancy in Namibia is 64.6 years while here in Denmark it is 81.3 and birth rates are 3.344 (low by sub Saharan standards(6.4) )and 1.700 - A disease that mostly harms people aged 65+ will have a lot more impact in Denmark than Namibia because the average Namibian will not grow old enough to be in the most severely affected age group while most Danes by far will and if she does she will have A LOT more children and grand children making her part (age group) of the local population A lot smaller making the impact of the disese on the population relatively smaller.

I should think so, also the use of hydroxychloroquin for malaria. I still have friends and family in Siuth Africa, most of whom have had covid during the middle of last year. They all have different doctors, but all told me that as soon as they tested positive they contacted their doctors, who gave them Ivermectin and zinc plus vitamin D. They all have private medical aid, so I don't know what the state hospitals are doing. A large portion of the population also go to Traditional Healers, or Herbalists.

Dear Dr Campbell, I very much appreciate your balanced reporting and commentary. I found it very supportive over the last year when I might very well have made a choice contrary to my own instincts. I am a Canadian who spent formative years from 5 to 10 in Tanzania. So I am very glad to hear the Africa reports, and in general how well the people are faring. I myself am unvaccinated. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was going through the process of being diagnosed with Cushing's disease and the subsequent brain surgery in June 2021. My cortisol level was at 16 times the normal high before I was finally put on drug therapy while waiting for surgery 7 months later. Along with the Cushing's and recovery from surgery, as well as the continuing recovery from the debilitating effects of the disease itself, I also have several associated comorbidities. So you might imagine, that there are many who consider me exceedingly foolish for not getting inoculated. In fact, sadly, my decision grounded in my own knowing has cost me a dear girlhood friendship, and others who now prefer to no longer associate with me. In January this year, I am quite sure I had Omicron. I had much the same symptoms as one of my doubled vaccinated sisters. Later she declared that my symptoms were no worse than hers. Here in British Columbia, we were specifically discouraged by the provincial medical officer from getting testing. I had lingering fatigue, possibly worse since I was still taking cortisol replacement therapy. Quarterly bloodwork in January showed my AM cortisol level had inexplicably risen to near normal levels by about 3 times the value 3 months before. Also, for the first time my C-reactive protein was in the high range. I suspect this was due to the infection and my body mounting its defence. At my next blood draw just yesterday, the cortisol level has dropped to about one and three quarters of the normal. So, my body is still not producing sufficient cortisol on its own, but this on its way to do so. I surmise that the near normal cortisol level was due to the infection. Surprisingly, the uric acid levels in January went down a little. They have since risen again. All to say that in my case, at age 60 and with the serious health issues I have been experiencing, I have fared as well as my vaccinated sister who is 7 years younger and in good physical shape and with no comorbidities. With much gratitude I my still relatively robust immunity to that lingering magic of an East African childhood. As an addendum, my Omicron headaches were 'bad', but significantly less painful than those I have experienced with Dengue fever as a teen, and malaria and a relapse as an adult in her 40's. Also, I have experienced worse respiratory symptoms with bronchitis, for which there was medication but no hospital admission. In January with Omicron I took care of it myself without involving the medical system. Hopefully this little personal report is assuring for those on the fence with getting vaccinated or not. My experience has convinced me of the strength of my immune system, and the value of natural immunity. So, I feel no need to get vaccinated after all this.
