Adam is pleased to welcome Bill Maher in studio for a one-on-one interview. The guys begin by discussing his Bill’s new show, ‘Club Random’. Adam then asks Bill about his upbringing in New Jersey, as well as his experiences in school, and his relationship with his parents. From there guys talk about Bill’s interview with Ben Shapiro on the topic of childhood obesity. Later they talk about why Bill doesn’t want to be around kids, and they share thoughts on everything from COVID vaccines to the afterlife. In the last part of the show, the guys talk about the problems with our two-party system, and Adam asks Bill about his daily health regiment.
Subscribe to ‘Club Random’, and watch ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’. Also follow him on Twitter & Instagram @BillMaher.

I grew up in the 1990s and had pretty much the same sort of "unsupervised" childhood that Bill and Adam reminisce about. Anyone who shared that experience appreciates the tasting notes of hose water, and probably microwaved a CD or two, but that's a good trade off (although I really do enjoy water from the hose), for learning how to be independent and deal with peers without needing to run to the nearest authority figure to whine.

Both of these guys only know rich people and elitist kids....so their view is very narrow of parenting. I raised kids in the 90's and I did have to buck the system to allow my kids to have free play time after school. I had to look at what the California state standard of homework was and I would time it and when the timer was up I drew a line on their homework. Signed that the state time had been met and my kids were going to be kids for a few hours now. The teachers hated me but my kids played outside with neighbors and were creative and did all sorts of science projects with mud or started a art gallery on the corner of the street to make $...no they didn't go onto Yale or Stanford. .but they are kind, hard working, independent adults who have huge hearts and great work ethic. Last I heard he was a Libertarian. he roasts liberals as bad as conservatives these days. Both extreme segments of those groups have gone so full tilt that neither one is willing to even listen to the other. That whole "if you don't agree with me, you're with them" mentality. @@giantsr1eva you may have an overly narrow definition of the word encouraged. As you mentioned people are often pointed in the wrong direction when it comes to food. Processed foods are advertised more heavily than unprocessed foods. Beverages that will make people fat are obviously pushed a lot harder than water or coffee. The government has subsidized carbs over fat and protein for decades. You are correct that this encouragement doesn’t come in the form of words, but the environment that has been out before people. It is an environment that creates fat people. Yet with all of that some people see through it, and are capable of thinking for themselves and determining what is actually good for them based on their own results.

When I was young, there was the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. Every kid in school, at least that I can remember, wanted to get that award. It was presented in a school-wide assembly and you were called out and asked to come on stage to receive yours. I could never quite get past the sit-up portion of the test. It was eliminated in 2013. We are doing ourselves and our children a disservice by not calling out our poor health practices and it's an American problem more than anywhere else it seems. I've traveled to Europe and the East. I don't see a sizable portion of any population with the obesity problem we have here, it's shameful and it's why our health care is so expensive too.

I remember and did that when I was in grade school. I sometimes look at what people put in their shopping carts and it amazes me how some are still vertical. We had one..just one kid in my 6th grade class that was heavy. There was one in my 8th grade class. And as Bill pointed out, by today's standards, they weren't that big. Today, it's like 2 of 5. I don't buy packaged food and I don't by soda. The not buying soda with its gobs of corn syrup is an easy opt out. Lay off of the Gatorades and energy drinks that amp your heart rate.
