If people go to the polling places to place their vote in person, sometimes lines are hours and hours long. I’ve never experienced that in my area, but I’ve seen video and heard that it can be an all-day process in more populated area. How do employers expect their employees to work a full 8-hour shift AND cast their vote during the hours that polling places are open. I do a paper ballot, but I know there are a lot of people who have been indoctrinated from right-wing radicals and Fox News-type media to believe that mail in ballots aren’t reliable. I trust the process, but others have given in to the conspiracy.

Voter suppression, sigh... Republicans: get an ID to Vote. Democrats: That's Voter SUPPRESSSSSIIIOOONNNN! Best actual response: get a fuckin' ID and BEAT them at their own game. Don't come back with gerrymandering - both sides do it to ridiculous lengths. Don't come back with; you can't give water on voting line. That is pure bullshit; you CAN until about 150 feet from polling entrance. THEN; motivate the Voters with good clear messaging that drives them to Vote; win various elections and CHANGE the rules...

Most of the congressional races in the Eastern Time Zone in the US were known by midnight. I'm writing this around 24 hours after the first polls closed in the US, and for the Senate, 2 or 3 out of 35 races are uncalled (I'm not counting the georgia Senate race, cause we offically will be having a runoff election next month). 390 of the 435 House races have been called by the Assiciated Press. So it's not a big deal, and it doesn't warrant a general response of "I dont know what's going on in that country!"

Why we don't get election results same day: R legislatures in certain states passed laws saying mail in votes can't even be OPENED, let alone counted, before election day. Here in Colorado, where we are almost entirely vote by mail, votes get counted as soon as your returned ballot is received so that results can be released on election day. All states COULD do this.

I also don't think it's a coincidence that CO is one of the few states with an independent election commission regarding state legislature seats, and that actually OVER-represents Democrats in the state House (usually it's in the other direction, BIG time). I mean, we have a lot of problems. The Electoral College is an abomination reminiscent of slaveowner days (it just is, it gives white voters in Wyoming infinitely more power than voters in states like California, for instance), the fact that we don't make election days federal holidays shows that our country is deeply subservient to the minoritarian conservatives, and the fact that redneck sheriff militias are able to patrol our polling sites show that we've sunk pretty far into fascism already. Calling that out definitely doesn't make you a bad American.

In the early 2000s, I remember seeing videos from Asian countries, every other person wearing a mask. Then, I was in a Prompt Care here in the states, with a sign that said that anyone coughing or with a runny nose, had to wear a mask. It makes sense! Greater than zero precaution against others getting sick (regardless of sickness). But I understand that American see that as some kind of abridgement of their "freedoms".
@andersandersen6295

@@bivensrk Let me educate you on masks, if you can smell through them, virus can also penetrate, a mask only protects from mucus and saliva getting sprayed, and we would all have to wear masks all the time in all situations to avoid that kind of contact, and any kind of being forced to wear something is by default just forct and a attack on free will. You do you and i do me!
@bivensrk
@bivensrk Жыл бұрын
@@andersandersen6295 So, you're "educating" me. Does that mean you have specialized training of some kind that you're imparting? Also, yes, many folks are wearing the cheap surgical masks or cloth ones. Those are (mostly) garbage (as has been pointed out). Flip side, I was wearing a mask with a tight seal on it, whose outside was coated in activated charcoal, and working under my car, spraying PB Blaster on different bolts, to break them up. I can say that while my wife complained about being able to spell the spray from 20 feet away, I couldn't smell it inches from my face. So, yes, the *right* mask CAN be effective in terms of smell. However, I also understand that everyone is the only person in the known universe and screams freedom when it comes to any modicum of looking out for their fellow man.

Voting is compulsory in Australia - and we love it that way. No voter suppression, if you are an Australian citizen - it is your duty to vote. If you don't vote (& once I didn't - in a small local election that I forgot about) you just send a letter to the relevant authority saying you had a headache / backache, whatever. The fine for not voting is never the point and rarely if ever followed through on, it's just a reminder, that it's one citizen / one vote, with no suppression of anyone's right to vote, in fact, just the opposite. Also, our electoral commission that runs voting all around the country is totally apolitical, has been for 100+ years. So we trust our elections and we all participate and it's great. Americans think they are the best example of democracy in the world. In Australia, we think you're one of the worst examples there is of democracy given you have so much partisan corruption. Oh! And we have this quaint tradition that at almost every polling booth on voting day, there is a BBQ that is run by a designated charity and most everyone buys a "democracy sausage" or burger, while making it fun & raising $ for a worthy charity such as the Red Cross etc... Voting is always on a Saturday, but obviously early voting / mail etc as well.

In Australia election results are usually on the same night by a few hours, and that's with compulsory voting and a ranked choice preferential voting system - which is far more complicated than the US system. And voting is on a Saturday, so that everyone can stay up late on Saturday night and then sleep in on Sunday.

Yep, and don't forget the sausage sizzles and cake stands which raise money for charity. So you can buy a snack while you spend a whopping 5-10 minutes waiting to vote, then can get on with the rest of your day. We also don't have "patriots" carrying firearms trying to intimidate voters, so there's that...

The difference between refusing to wear a mask when it's needed and insisting on wearing one when it's unnecessary is that in the first case you put other people's lives in danger, in the second case you just look stupid. I would never get angry at someone for wearing a mask, just like I would never insult someone who washes their hands too often. Why do you care?
@blaster-zy7xx
@blaster-zy7xx Жыл бұрын
Exactly! You hit the nail on the head . In addition, we don’t know why anyone else may be wearing a mask, don’t make it political or paranoia. It could be they are compromised or care for someone at home that is compromised or they have a cold or any of a 100 other reasonable reasons.
