I would love to reiterate a couple of points Bill has made.... Bill's comment about age and starting to learn - I started playing in my local Jazz Band when I was 14. There was a 70 yr old chap who decided that he wanted to start playing trombone, and another (65) who started clarinet. Both (within 2-3 years) went on to become regular additions to the band. That (to me) shows that their maturity and love of the music outweighed the years of study that I personally put in. Secondly, regarding amount of practice vs regularity...totally agreed. As a youth I would practice once a week if made to (when studying classical)....as soon as I WANTED to play I was playing in short bursts but at very frequent intervals. I'm sure that Bill will attest that at the age of 15 I was "ok" So...listen to this guy. He has taught me a few new things over the years since he was Padawan :)

Although being not a beginner at the piano I still find much comfort in someone advising me in terms of how to practice and not to worry about practising not enough but to focus on practising in a regular way. Thank you very much!

You so great a teacher. It has taking me a long time to.master most of the concepts but now you have made it clear that it all boils down to practice. Thanks

Great video! All great answers! After years with no functional piano I found it’s relatively easy to get a full sized one online for free. After years of practicing 5 hours daily I had big lulls in my practicing due to putting too much pressure on myself to do 5 hours again when I lack the spare time. You’re absolutely right about regular practice and progress. I appreciate your inspiration very much. Have a Merry Christmas!

Another things with the kids vs adults. As an adult theory comes easier because we know how to "study" and make more complex connections, so to speak. I stopped as a kid, but as an adult the "why" became a lot easier.
@BillHilton
@BillHilton 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true, Larry. Interestingly, though, that comes with a downside: I find adults often want to know the "why" of everything, which can lead to them drowning themselves in unnecessary theory at the early stages. Kids, who are much more inclined to take authority at face value, are less like that, and correspondingly can be more focussed.

Not an advert, but I would recommend buying a used electronic piano, like Roland FP-10 (I adore it). They are being on sale because many people buy them, and give up their lessons over time. This way you will get a barely used instrument with a great discount.

That's a very good recommendation, Evgeniy: I think the Roland FP series are probably the best value for money digital pianos out there, especially if bought second hand!

Great tips. I wonder if practicing music you like should be on the list. It's not very inspiring to practice a piece you really don't care about just for the mechanics of playing. But expressing something you feel good about would push your skill levels. I mean at the end of the day, we want to express ourselves musically right?
@BillHilton
@BillHilton 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. What I try to encourage people to do, though, is be open-minded about discovering new styles. In part that's because (I find) there's often a slight disconnect between the music you like listening to and music you find satisfying to play. Also learning things in styles we don't normally have much to do with can inform our playing in styles we want to work on (which is one of the reasons so many jazz pianists get obsessed with Bach...)

Hi Bill! Love your stuff. I have your books and they are extremely helpful. What happened to your website? I was trying to follow the links you put in your books for video examples of your lessons and it used to redirect me to the proper link on your new website but now it’s not taking me anywhere. I’d really love to be able to access the videos you did for your book owners. They always helped me as I was following along. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

Hi Hannah: glad to hear you’ve found my stuff useful! The website had a major server disaster just before Christmas, but should be fully rebuilt now - old links should redirect you to the homepage, which has a link to the resources page. I suspect there may be a few ongoing problems but I can’t pin down what they are, because everything seems to be working normal for me. Could you possibly drop me an email at billhiltonmedia at gmail dot com with an example of a URL that isn’t working? I’d greatly appreciate it!
